I did this with three of my grandkids! I told them we were making a memory. After they dyed their yarn we rolled the yarn into balls and each made whatever they wanted! They were so proud of their yarn creations!
Very good video. I'll have to try this. I would have liked to see the yarn after it was rinsed and dry though. Or even as far as making a swatch. Maybe next time
I LOVE all of your videos!!! I'm learning to knit with your begginer video. I would love if you did a video on circle needle basics, and how to knit socks with them.
+Natalie Gomez I have a video on how to use the magic loop method.... check it out. It is all about using circular needles. I don't have a video on how to do socks......yet! : )
I love your microwave. I've never seen one like it. I have two kids, 11 and 9. I ordered some sock yarn from KnitPicks and I am going to try this with them. I wish you had showed the finished yarn though. I am going to show the kids this video before we get started.
Wait, what do we do to wash the excess color out, soak it in water and machine wash? I wish you would've shown us what it looked liked dried, I was excited for that part haha Very cool way to dye yarn, I am going to try this sometime!
Yes, once you have set the dye, you just rinse out the yarn and set it aside to air dry. If you would like, you can use something like wool wash to wash the yarn, then rinse and air dry. I hope this helps! We totally should have shown it dry!
I tried this once but I did it completely wrong. So thank you for showing me the correct way. My main mistake was just leaving the skein in the bowl of water in the microwave. I didn't know to wrap it up in plastic instead. I also added way too much water to the dye. So thank you very much. :) I love all your videos and they are so incredibly helpful.
ExpressionFiberArts yep??? That literally doesn't answer their questions at all, they asked two questions... They asked whether you wash it by hand in cold or warm water or a no rinse wool wash, so which washing method are you saying "yep" to?!
Because of the citric acid in the Kool-aid, the dye should be dyefast. However, I suggest giving your dyed yarn a good rinse in cool to lukewarm water until it runs clear just to make sure. Once it's dry, it's ready to use.
Thanks for the video. Can you do a video on how to dye acrylic yarn, Either on the stove, even in the slow cooker. I really would appreciate it. I like knowing how to do things in a couple different ways.If you have one in the microwave for acrylic is nice.
Hi Chandi. I was wondering what kind of wool you used in this video. I tried Kool-Aid dying today and loved it. However, in the video, the grape flavored mix turn your yarn a grayish brown, but when I used the grape, mine to purple/ gray color. I used a corridale cross sheeps wool yarn.
+Hayati Zahira Any type of brush. Foam brushes work best. The plastic wrap is used to keep the dye from splattering. If you can find another strategy to keep the dye from splattering, that would work.
+Karissa Segovia It probably won't work. Because it is not a fiber that will absorb the dye. The best type of fiber to use with dyeing are animal fibers, wool, silk, or alpaca. : )
Dont know if you have time to even read post here but if you do.. can Kool aide dye Lanolin stained wool? I have a awesome hat i made from a wonderful Coriadale fleece I spun, the yellowing is not as even as I wanted I would like to dye it to fill in some of the really white areas : ) thanks for any help~*~
If you're worried about the dye bleeding, you can set it even more by giving it a bath in white vinegar and water. Here's more info about that process: www.darngoodyarn.com/blogs/darn-good-blog/why-dye-bleeds-what-to-do-about-it As to how long the color lasts... that's going to depend on a number of factors, such as how frequently it's washed, the type of detergent used, the colors, so unfortunately, I really can't say.
Did this with my granddaughter today but I think it was in microwave too long. Got a scorched area. Next go around I’ll use less time. But great video!!
+Anne Goodwin You can blow dry it. Or, you can simply let it air dry. Depending on the size of the skein, and a couple of other factors, it could take a couple hours to a day or so.
Arrruna Is Back uhm obviously at a grocery store since literally every single grocery store sells kool aid, and has almost every single flavor of kool aid. I've never in my life seen any one have to actually ask where to buy kool aid, even the people that hate/think kool aid is disgusting all know that every single grocery store sells kool aid.
Can you do a tutorial on how to hold the working string and the needles in knitting, I recently started and I can't seem to hold everything the right way, and I would like to go faster.😁
+guiltyblade Wool is best because it is a protein fiber from animals. Alpaca and Silk will also work. Synthetic fibers, such as acrylic, do not work at all. Cellulose fibers, such as plants (think cotton or linen), will take the dye but it will be fainter and won't last.
Hi. Thanks for the tutorial. Was wondering if Kool Aid is what you use in your own dyeing process along with white vinegar, to permanently set your dyes in your hanks of wool?..do you also use any mild soap like Dawn soap or a mild shampoo to wash your skeins before letting them air dry?...so luv your kitchen and microwave. Sandy....
Hello! Cant wait to do this with my little ones :) this is the first time dyeing... I know to use wool, but can it be any wool yarn, even just a wool yarn from jo anns? or is this something special that I need to head to the yarn shop in town for. Thanks!!
@@ExpressionFiberArts I asked because we don’t use microwaves. I haven’t for many years. And thank you so much for your tutorials and many great tips 😊
Caroline Stewart it's a drink mix. You mix the flavored powder in the packet with sugar and water. The UK had Kool aid. It's been a very popular drink mix for decades upon decades and I know for a fact that the UK has kool aid available because I grew up around the UK and middle East!
These tutorials incredible! You are a truly blessing to the knitting and five community! : D God has certainly given you a loving, bubbly demeanor. It will be used to minister to many peoples sister!!! May God richly bless all that you, in Jesus name!⚓🍇💯

I would have liked to have seen the dried yarn.
I did a search 4 dyeing yarn with Kool-Aid, and here you are! This was an excellent demonstration. All of your tutorials are excellent. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
I would absolutely LOVE to see dyeing tutorials!

What kind of cups are those? Also how do you make it colorfast?
Very interesting. I'd like to try
Go for it! 💕
That microwave is so cool!
+porter malone Thanks!
So, if you have white yarn, and wanna do the whole thing, could you still do it like you did, except with all the yarn?
You're microwave is so cool!! Would it be possible if you could do a video on how to use circle needles? I'm really struggling with them. Thank you x

Have you ever sealed the colors with vinegar?
Yes, I have done that!
@@ExpressionFiberArts I’m wondering if I should use vinegar on the yarn I bought from you?
Wonder what would happen if you combined the pink lemonade wit the blue and if that would create a more purple look.

Hi shandy how do you keep your working yarn from twisting?
so how would you wash? like other hand painted yarns, warm/cool water and a light detergent or no rinse wool wash?
+silverayne22 yep!

You are so funny! It's so COOL to watch you work; and never mind the mess, an artists hands are never clean.
Thanks for the tutorial. I have 2 skeins on cashmere that I want to dye. Do I have to treat it differently?
Do you find it easier to dye wool when its spun up or in its natural state?
Will the Kool aid wash out
I Love watching you, not in a weird way though. I enjoy learning from you.
This makes me happy!
Great tut! was the water cold?
Thanks
+Esther Schmidt It was lukewarm. : )
Could you do this with food coloring ? I have seen some very nice colors of food coloring for cakes at Michaels
You sure can! Just add in some vinegar! ❤️
Do you rinse the yarn after you set the dye in the microwave?
+Penny_ 208 yes!
Did you have to mordant first?
I think that's what Kool-Aid is but don't quote me on that ;)

Dose red hart yarn work does it have to be. White from jodie love. Video easter egg dye work as well
Any yarn, as long as it is animal or plant based can be dyed. They simply require different types of dyes.
Omg that microwave! Love the idea of making my own yarn, was wondering how you would "set" the koolaide dye
The microwave is fun. ❤️

I used my dewey dk yarn. It is 70% super wash merino wool 20% nylon and 10% silk. Hope this helps a little in figuring out the difference. : )
She told you in the video that the purple color actual shows up as a brownish purplish grey color....
Chandi can you use the kool-add dry without mixing it with water?
I haven't tried that. That would be an interesting experiment! 💕
How do you make speckels?
You would do some sprinkling of the dye, rather than painting it on. 😊
And the yarn setting in the microwave will keep it from bleeding when washing ?
Yes. The heat sets the dye which should stop it from bleeding. 😊
I need to try this. Vert cool!
+R Jonez absolutely! Let me know how it goes.
What is the best thing to dye yarn with and what if you don't have a microwave
You can steam set it in a steamer pot for about 30 minutes. Just wrap it in cling wrap and steam.
I would really like to see more knitting videos
+porter malone We will be adding some more soon. : )
will you be able to wash the yarn after wards and the dye won't come out?

Do you know if food coloring would work?
+Taylor Golub Yes! Just add a splash of vinegar!
great video i have a question the water you put in the koolaid was it warm or cold water?
+Shavon Lynn It was lukewarm. : ) XOXO
Do you add vinegar and is the water warm?
I don't think it's necessary. 💚
Is plastic wrap needed because I don't have any at home and what type of brush I needed for this prosess??
XOXO....(arieff)

I am not sure. I think it would dye better if you had the lanolin scoured off. But, I am not totally sure.
Great video. I need some white yarn now lol. If you wash the yarn after it has been coloured does the colour wear off?
+JINN KIRIYU On Animal base fibers the colors stays. If you are doing it with synthetic fibers the colors would dull after washing. Hope this helps!

+Duniaku Dakwahku hmmm.. I am not sure. You can try amazon.com? .... maybe. I wish I knew more.

food coloring or cake dyes. You just need add a splash of white vinegar to your dyes.
