- When you travel Japan, If your own countries' roaming prices are expensive, you can use this option to get data on your phone while in Japan.

US travelers in Japan report that the foreign roaming offered by their US phone carrier generally works well in Japan. I would try my carrier's foreign roaming before buying a SIM or eSIM. The advantage is rather than the SIM's foreign phone number you can call and text with your own number. I like staying on my US plan because when I've used a SIM or eSim I often get strange charges showing up on my credit card bill for weeks.
AT&T's roaming is $12/day with no cap.
Verizon' roaming in Japan charges $10/day and data is limited to 0.5GB/day.
Google Fi's roaming in Japan is reported to work very well and Google charges $10/GB.
