      A trial run of coins were produced in 1964 in preparation for the production of the 1965 SMS collectors set. There were 10-20 of each denomination. This involved specially prepared dies that gave a distinctive surface appearance. Mint director Ava Adams saved them in her private collection. After her death in 1990 they were sold at her estate auction. You need to find one of these.

      Look for full steps … clean no scratches ! No dents …. Not worn down at high points ,no mint mark which means it’s from Philly 1964 for the date that’s pretty much it

      You would have received it from mint director Ava Adams. These were unknown until 1990 when a few trial pieces were found in her estate. It seems to have a practice run trial where she kept a few. They were all then sold at at her estate auction.

    Hey treasure town I do have a 1964 Thomas Jefferson minted nickel and it’s detailed etchings are raised very clearly as well as the mint and it is not in bad shape at all for a nickel this old

    Back of the coin, Monticello bldg. front steps. If the steps are full steps, that could be a rare one (FS=full steps) . Not only the 1964 nickle but also the 1966.

    I have one from dad’s old collection, he gave them to me when I was 13 years old. The one I have has a mirror finish, but no mint mark. It looks like it was made in San Francisco mint. But then again has no S. I’ve saved it for all these years because of the luster on it. Still saved up in the package.

    What’s the difference between the special 1964 nickel and the normal circulated 1964 nickel? What feature should we be looking for that sets it apart? I just went to my nickels and I have 2 1964 nickels and also a 1964 D nickel that’s colored green for some reason.

    You can tell if you have one the finish on the coin has a special color to it and you can tell the difference from a proof I have one still in the package with full steps the coin stands out from a normal nickel because of the tone finish and minds is not a proof coin I'm going to send it off and see what happens I had these coin's over 15 years or more found out about the SMS about 5 years ago good luck to everyone that have one and searching for one

      I think u have one like the one i have , the one i have is a texture and color ive never seen on any coin or in picture or videos, it for sure stands out when placed in a pile of coins . And amazingly it had no dark spots or scratches of any sort . ive tryed taking a pic in so many different lightings n the color just dont reflect like it should . Its weird. Its like a smooth grey , frosty finish.

      A 1964 nickel is considered to be a relatively rare coin, making it worth a significant amount of money. The 1964 nickel is the only year in which nickels were made of silver, as opposed to being composed of copper and nickel as most current nickels are.       @@jaymartell2967 I hear you, something happened between 1964 & 1965. To make sure your coins have silver specially half dollar coins look the rims all around, if the coin has red, it is cooper and zinc or cooper and nickel alloy.

    I literally just came into a 1964-D WITH the double mint strike. 🎉🎉🎉🎉 definitely better then a MS63 and not quite a MS67 but I would put money on it that it's a MS65 ... if your interested HIT ME UP or drop a comment. Once it's graded I will be asking 2xs what I would take for it now.

    1964 nickel look closely for the mint mark "D", it is a punch error and the D looks like it's been punched twice, that is a valuable one. Inspect your nickles.

    the biggest factor is the 1964 being a proof coin. There's not that many proof coins from 1964. The ones that are around were supposed to be proof coins for 1965

    it's a deep strike setting and on the internet layout of the coin non mirror finish more of a hazy between the head and the letterings over the 1964 date and the head of the Jefferson more of a hazy polish but it's a deep strike that's what you're looking for settings real prominent of the letterings. Planchet strike.

    So how do you determine if you have a Special Mint Set coin compared to a regular business strike coin?SMS were ONLY in 1965, 1966, and 1967? The dates will NOT have mint marks! Plus The Philly mint did not strike coins with the “P” mark until 1980! So how do you tell the difference in 1964 that it’s an SMS?

      Provenance. All known samples were found in the mint director's private collection after her death in 1990 and sold at auction. less than two dozen of each denomination were made. They are all in collections and when your granddad dies it will be labeled as such.
      It's a joke to go coin hunting for this.
      The only purpose of this video is to get people excited so they hit that up button

    You literally missed the most important part dude! Look on the right side of the back, you'll see a D and some didn't get struck hard enough so they went in and struck them by hand and they did it OVER the D that was already there!!! I saved a BUNCH of 1964 and older nickles and I have like 50 of these nickels about 7 of them have no mint marks, I did find 1!!!!!! I have a few really really nice 1964's that would grade VERY HIGH! I WISH MY DOUBLE D STAMPED WAS ONE OF THE VERY MINT ONES I HAVE BUT TO MY LUCK, I FOUND ONE!!!!!! GOT SOME GREAT ANGLES OF THE DOUBLE D's!!!! Posting on Ebay to see what kind of love, if it doesn't sell I will send it in to get slabbed, I should probably do that first. I have. A few mint errors on $2 bills and a 1968 DD penny
