In those days nobody knew about Depression or Bipolarism then they way they know about it now. It's amazing how The Beales/Fowlers legacy still continues.
I remember the caretaker of the school where my Mum worked had an older brother who had a complete mental breakdown (I remember my Mum telling my Dad one night) apparently he was sectioned and was undergoing ECT to snap him out of his deep depression. That would of been about 1981. Was the first time I heard the expression “manic depression” Now there are ways to diagnose and offer alternative methods, medications and treatments.
I was just about to write that! Over 20yrs of marriage in that overcrowded house where Lou reigned supreme and told over and over he was a loser I am surprised he made it that far
Never mind the fact they're in-law relatives, Pete Beale and Arthur Fowler were natural brothers than any biological kind!! Because the team-ups and the arguments and the comedy and the drama they had together were some of the most watchable in television history!!
Lou just contradicted herself: first of all, she states that Albert can still think and see despite being dead, and yet moments later, she laments that she will never see them together at Christmas ever again. Which is it, Lou? You're quite formidable as the matriarch of the family, but your memory seems to be going.
but that's the same with every show now and back then, things haven't changed nor will they ever, you will never find a perfect cast. You will always get your good actors and characters and your bad ones, that's the way it goes like everything else.Ofcourse what defines a good character or good acting is subjective, there is no 1 actor every person will think is great at their performance. Even meryl streep has her haters.
No wonder Arthur was depressed! He was constantly told he was a failure from Pauline & Lou! They bullied him! He always done his best, but it was never enough!
In the 1980s, everybody looked at the character Lou Beale as some kind of matriarch, a woman who was never wrong and everyone thought the sun shone out of her backside. But looking back now , 32 years on, its very plain to see that Lou was just a cantankerous old bat who because she was the eldest in the family thought she knew it all. She ridiculed poor Arthur who from no fault of his own was out of work ,yet she supported her 16 year old Granddaughter who'd got herself knocked up by someone else's husband . In my opinion Lou, you needed to keep that big trap shut and start to respect your son in law, and tell Michelle to live by the family's rules and stop demanding what she will and won't during her pregnancy and to be grateful she's still got a roof over her head. Honestly ! these cheesy old soaps....😡
When we all loved watching soaps and they were more realistic. Family life can be very exhausting and stressful at times no wonder why Arthur became low
I dont watch eastenders these days, I cant stand sharon and when they killed mick off I never watched it again after that. Poor martin screaming in background, Pauline was a vile woman til she died. Bad mouthed everyone around her an had a face that could of curdled milk. Gotta feel bad for arthur he was a legend x
A fantastic, memorable performance from Bill Treacher as Arthur.
Yes, indeed. It was very well done.
he can't act for shit
@@bp6329 nae bother
@@bp6329he is certainly no Tom Hardy. I agree he was wank.
What an actor! I was way too you to appreciate him when I was younger. Just remember him being miserable.

Bipolar doesn't exist in reality. It only exists in the mainstream media's imagination.
I never had a clue about it. A year later my mum had it. I've been through it twice on tablets 😕😕

People were very aware of depression back then, it’s not something new, it just wasn’t highlighted much on tv
Bill was brilliant as Arthur great characters great actors
I love the old Eastenders
To cap it all... Martin starts bawling.
“Every time I come in here there’s some sort of crisis.” 40 years of Eastenders summed up in one sentence.
This was great acting by him.
RIP
''You the big man, standing behind your fruit and veg'
Givin it all Charlie Big Potatoes
Arthur should have said "meat and two veg!"

“WELL YA CAN’T GROW UP WITHOUT YA FIBRE IN THE MAWNING, CAN YA?”
This is what l miss about EE. Actors who know how to act.
No. She dies in 1988 and this was earlier than 1987.
I really miss Arthur, Pete and Pauline in EE. Actors who can act and not some pretty faces with no acting skills we see in the current product.
Yep, been watching some old clips. It was far better, far better stories and quality of actors.
Legends.
Never seen Arthur like that before.
So long ago. The only one still alive (and she was believed dead for a long time) is Kathy now!
And Pauline and Lou are both dead in real life too 😢
And Martin, even if he was off-screen.
arthur looks like the lion from the wizard of oz
Albert can still think and still see.
1:59 Martin never changed, did he????
Living with a whining wife and THE mother of all mother in laws its not surprising he got depressed!

I find this scene to be quite hilarious and totally acting-phenomenal if you ask me.
Arthur looks funny when he loses his temper

Foebane72 This family is pure poison.
Poor Arthur
It'd've reached that stage if the Archangel Gabriel'd been there! 😀😀😀
RIP Bill Treacher, a great actor. Eastenders was brilliant then, it’s rubbish now.
I loved arthur
Why?
Poor Arthur feels like a failure as he can't support his family.

The best of EastEnders
Who looks at Gillian Taylforth and can’t stop thinking of the infamous motorway incident 👅

Er, Pauline, go and get your screaming baby. What the heck?
Pete and Michelle always got on my nerves.
Ain’t nowt wrong with Fruit and Veg 💪
I never thought depression makes you angry?!
Then you don't know much about depression do you?
I'm sure the Archangel Gable would've risen above it!
Ken has been away since 1965.
I do t know why they invented him. He had no bearing on any episode.
I guess Lou knew that Arthur was too old to have another baby.
Was this actually Lou's last Christmas?
alex jones don't think it was. I think there was one more
yes i guess your right m8

Stephen O'Donnell well said mate. We had legends back then. Got amateurs nowadays.
No the 'acking' was very poor in those days - but on the other hand, the acting was brilliant.
Pete had no endearing qualities at all.
