I like to imagine you were listening to Frank Sinatra's New York New York while doing this. Jokes aside, I'm fascinated by the process and your approach. Thanks for sharing.
“Broke the Leica for a little bit” 😢 Again, enjoying your thoughts on this. I’m definitely going to try this method on my next zine… rather than than just staring at my screen for hours during sequencing. Absolute eye rot.
The 1114 down to 52 number made me curious what your usual "ratio" is. By ratio I mean "total photos taken" to "photos you would keep" to "portfolio shots". Of course comparing film vs digital will skew the first number for many people (as would street/candid vs landscape, etc.). Personally I love when I'm able to look at contact sheets of great photographers and feel a bit better about myself that they too don't hit every single time.
When I shot mainly digital I would take thousands of photos per trip / project. Now I’m on film, it’s obviously a lot less, but I think for every 1 portfolio photo, I’ve shot maybe a roll or two… That 1114 works out roughly to like, 30 rolls? It’s mixed up of 35mm and 120 so kinda hard to actually tell. Point being - I still shoot wayyyyy more photos than I actually end up keeping. If I wasn’t trying to build a story with this book, i could probably refine that 52 down even more to like 20 portfolio shots maybe? It’s hard to say. Also, if you haven’t seen it / own it already, the magnum contact sheets book is absolutely fantastic!

Can confirm it’s 1000% more effective. Was going loopy looking at lightroom 😅
