Interestingly, there’s evidence to suggest that the heads were attached to the handles with wooden pins. The pins would break with a heavy impact, and the soft iron shaft would bend. This prevents the enemy throwing them back and renders the shield useless. There’s also speculation that one pilum was lighter than the other for different ranges. In formation, these would have been devastating. Nice build.

I remember reading about the wooden pins. It is fascinating how the ancient weapons morphed over time for their various purposes. I hadn't heard about the two different weighted ones, but that makes alot of sense. Thank you! What would you like to see me make next?

looks like a good defense against street knife wielders.

Good explanation of the battle realities of the ancient world. Very interesting! Keep up the good work.

I want to know if there is an armour piercing spear you could use in actual combat (can be easily removed and can pierce armour like this one) It would be really cool if you could design something like that in one of your next projects.

Could you explain why you cut off steel at 5:55 ?
Surely more steel that goes into the shaft is a good thing?

Nevermind. Watching more made it make sense.
The shaft would have been split more for a longer attachment point which is bad.

You got it! Thank you for watching! What would you like me to forge next?

@@AdamRhein Sword builds are always fun.
Oh. Another request if you don't mind.
I'm always curious about how loud a forge is during use since I'm sure videos edit it to be softer for the viewer.
Would you be willing to measure that somehow? (I think the tool is a decibel meter?)

@@destroyer1675 The loudest thing in my shop is hammer on anvil, especially striking the horn. It's loud enough you need hearing protection, and I'd liken it to firing a .22lr out of a long barrel outdoors. Maybe just slightly quieter.

@@cacklingpikeman4303 late response but how much worse would that be indoors?
Blacksmithing has become a potential hobby of mine but I don't want neighbours to complain.
