  • Tune your toms to actual notes for premium tones! You can use as little or as much dampening as you like. Personally, I always aim to use zero dampening, although from time to time I will use half a Moongel on the batter head or maybe a couple cotton balls inside the toms. There is no easy trick, it's all about experimenting with YOUR drums. I use zero dampening on these Honest Abe drums because they sound so fricken rad.

You’re the man. Been fiddling with the tune bot and my toms sound great after this (with some tweaking)

I don’t really dial it into a really perfect pitch. I guess I kinda think about it, I want kick and floor Tom basically same pitch, then the rack tom would be almost a 5th higher.
But while gigging and depending on the gig, I kinda think more about references. And I have a few main ones that I can get really well, Dead/70’s, pitch is mainly irrelevant there. Bop, which I just want articulation and things are pretty cranked up, on the other end up jazz (big band), I go a bit lower than bop. Warm and in control, which is coated heads, slight muffling and lower/mid range pitch tuning. Snare is a whole different subject, but maybe I should start dialing into a perfect pitch.
I have recorded with a kit tuned to the song, but I honestly didn’t notice it and then I felt like the vibe needed toms to be dead more than the notes mattered.
Drum tuning is such a personal thing, only instrument where maybe 50% of players don’t even think about or know how to tune, haha.

How do you choose the interval you tune to? Do you just try out which note sounds best for the tom and use random intervals, or do you choose a musical interval depending on how many toms you are using and then try to tune the tom to that particular pitch?

Tunebot is the only way to go. Once you have your settings, it's a snap. The app gets you close to where you want to be. Slight differences are due to different shell depths and the types of heads. Personally, I never stretch the heads. I use Evans UV2 for tom batter and UV1 for snare batter. Evans ebony resos for the toms. Not a fan of Remo heads. Nice vid,

When you’re tech’ing for someone (I saw ADTR most recently), do you use a tune bot on their drums as well? Does it depend on how particular they are? Great video

All depends on what the drummer wants! Alex is a close friend, so he said do whatever you want lol. So yes, I use a TuneBot wherever I can because it's so easy to replicate the tone that I'm looking for

true. I filmed this video quickly before filming two Meshuggah covers, didn't have much time for other stuff. Check out my other videos to see how good the drums sound :)
