I still remember the shock in the movie theater when I saw it, as I don't think I had ever heard so many adults gasp in horror like that. They should've expected it if they saw a few Twilight Zones. You can't really blame them though, because this movie was enough shock as it was, and so different, so who would figure a typical Serling shock ending was in store? I don't think anybody at the time knew Serling was connected with it.
Minty, you are lowkey one of the best youtubers in the world, your style is consistent and your content is genuine, you got your own thing and that is remarkable!
I love the Ape prosthetics made by John Chambers. He also worked on Addams Family, Lost in Space, Star Trek, and The Munsters. Roddy McDowell was the best thing about the movie/ series.
Sadly, every time I see them now all I can see is the face of the "lady" Roseanne Barr called an ape 😂😅🤣 PS Roseanne wasn't lying, they're like twins 🙊
Planet of the Apes is a classic example of a screen adaptation of a book changing the storyline in a huge way.In the book they were on another planet. Many fans of the book were very upset over the change
@misterflibble6601 Don't forget that Heston had a small part in the failed 2001 reboot where the line was flipped... BTW- love your username and avatar.. 👍 *BOYZ FROM THA DWARF!!*
In 2001, Planet of the Apes was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Some of the set is still around! James Rolfe did a location tour and found tons of scrap from the Ape City & the rock stairs where Heston & other frequently use
As a kid in the 70's my brother cousins and I all had the toys. The playset and action figures. Our ape arm always were defeated by Evil knievel and the Six Million Dollar Man. Good times.
I too had the complete sets and action figures, and would include other action figures with them to play out new and more unusual stories. I even have a few of the dolls left from them, that still good, like they were just bought! We had some of the best toys especially action figures from movies and tv shows back in the 1970s!
My Mom bought Cornelius and Zera dolls for Christmas on year. I thought that was super weird as I was 7 and a female into Barbie dolls. Although they all lived very peacefully at the bottom of my toybox
Commenting before I’ve watched this just to try and boost. Such an iconic movie. I listened to the audiobook a couple of years ago. Although there are some pretty stark differences with what the movie became, there is a consistent parallel journey.
Agreed. And the tv show production values were very high. Makeup and such compare very favorably to the first movie. Unfortunately, the script quality was very uneven. But hey, as kids, it was all just big fun!
Unlike the others, I went to the premiere of Kingdom. I absolutely LOVE that movie. As a result, I bought all the other Planet of the Apes movies. I have now watched Kingdom 3 times, and will definitely watch it again! Love it!
I saw Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in the theater. It was pretty good! I didn't think it was quite as good as the three that came before it, but it was very entertaining. I hope they make more of them.
Brilliant film and one of my favourite ever movies - Chuck Heston was brilliant in everything he was in - Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, Soylent Green, Omega Man etc
I loved how when Taylor finally got his hands on a weapon it was never more than arm's distance away from then on. He wasn't going to let anyone put a collar and leash on him again. It gave me one of those warm and fuzzy feelings. Humans truly are the most dangerous species on the planet.
Beautiful message at the end of your video Minty. Here's looking forward to that day where we do find common ground, get along and work together to make a better world. 🙏
I have only seen the first movie from the original series and it has been a long time since I last watched it but you helped me revisit some good memories from it, thank you. I did also watch a few episodes of the tv series. I would like to get more acquainted with chapters of the franchise I don’t know as well in the future.
Kingdom made over 400 million worldwide. It was a surprisingly good movie. I wasn't a huge fan of the franchise. But, enjoyed the newest one. Always respected it legacy in film.
I knew a lot of what you covered in this video, but thoroughly enjoyed it all the same. Planet of the Apes is probably my favorite franchise. If you decided to make a video for each movie in the series, I'd happily watch them all.
On the beach, Dr. Zaius has Cornelius read a scripture from the Sacred Scrolls: “Beware the beast man, for he is the devil’s pawn. He, alone among primates, kills for sport and for lust and for greed. He will kill his brother to steal his brother’s land. Do not allow him to breed in great numbers for surely he will destroy his world and our world too. He is the harbinger of death.”(Scroll 29, Verse 6). I have that memorized, and it’s profoundly true. Gives me chills.
Thank you Minty for this review :) I like to add that when Planet of the Apes came out in 1968, so did, 2001: A Space Odyssey. For those who watched 2001, the first act included ape-man as we know. When it came to the Academy Awards the following year, the Best Costume/Make-Up when to Planet of the Apes - Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke were flabbergasted because in 2001 - in my opinion as well as theirs - looked more like ape-like than anything else. I guess it is because in 2001, the ape-man does not speak, it only grunts and yells, whereas in Planet of the Apes, they speak English. No where in film history have I ever seen great costume design for apes than in 2001. It's good to know know that both films did create an impact in our society and has paved the way for film making and how we look at each other today. It's not just a story about apes taking over our Earth - it's more of a lesson for Mankind.
Thank you for yet another stellar video, Minty! If you'd be up for it, I would LOVE to see you make videos about the other entries in the franchise! Planet of the Apes is my all-time favorite film franchise! I saw Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes earlier this year and found it to be a wonderful entry in this reboot franchise for the property. It is a more than worthy successor to the trilogy that came before it and pays homage to what came before all throughout, showcasing once again that history can be defined differently, and not just by the victors. There's even an absolutely hilarious version of the film titled "The Raw Cut". Exclusive to the Bluray, this cut features the film being shown side by side with the behind the scenes, pre-CGI version, complete with the actors acting like apes. It's exactly these kinds of special features that keep me in the home media game! Again, thank you for the wonderful video, and thank you for being the stellar person you are! I'm so grateful to you and all the work you put into your videos. They are something I put on to enjoy or something I watch now when I need to be joyful. Have a wonderful day!
Ah yes, Minty is the best, I've seen a few copycats, like the ones using a AI narrator or even one with a real person, but none are as good as Minty Comedic Arts, you are are king to me! Not only do you really know your stuff when it comes to movies and tv shows, but you make it a lot of fun to watch and learn about all that went on behind the scenes of some our favorite movies and tv shows! So thank you for all your hard work Minty!
A total masterpiece, love the new ones 4 so far. But for the makeup and total practicality of it all. Just brilliant. Nice vid Minty, got a couple to catch up on but your Chanel is Mint 😊
Thank you for a great insight as always - Love the way your timing and conclusion hints at the US election, and how the subject matter resembles that conflict.
Another great one, buddy! You're always talking about inspirations, well I'd say you're an inspiration to cinema UA-camrs. Keep up the great, informative content brother!!
The original still amazes me to this day! What a great video highlighting things we may not know Minty. I found that interesting about Martin Luther King.
Thanks for another great video! The original book is quite good and a quick read. Surprisingly short. I really enjoyed “Kingdom”. I mean, it wasn’t quite up to the other three in the storytelling department. And I am a bit worried that they may go completely off-canon in the next one, given the ending. But, it was high quality entertainment and felt to me like it was made with a great deal of care and respect for what came before.
1. Scrapped Pregnancy Subplot (8:38-9:44) "Nova was pregnant with Taylor's baby...would have birthed a new species of civilized human" - BOMBSHELL: The original ending had Taylor dying and Nova carrying humanity's evolutionary future, completely changing the movie's message 2. Rod Serling's Original Vision (4:26-5:33) "Serling wrote the script...the Apes were shown to be living in a technologically advanced society" - REVELATION: The Twilight Zone creator's original version was deemed too expensive, forcing a complete reimagining of ape society 3. Makeup Psychological Impact (11:21-12:22) "Rodney McDow... went berserk" and "Kim Hunter... burst into tears feeling that she 'lost herself'" - SHOCKING: The groundbreaking ape makeup had severe psychological effects on the actors, with Heston never seeing his co-stars without makeup during filming 4. Martin Luther King Jr. Connection (13:34-13:51) "Martin Luther King Jr... was tragically assassinated on April 4th 1968 just one day after the release" - REVELATION: The film's commentary on racial tensions coincided with this pivotal moment in civil rights history 5. Test Film Existence (7:22-8:24) "short Test movie... made on the cheap for just $5,000" - SURPRISING: A completely different version exists with original cast members James Brolin and Edward G. Robinson, showing an alternate vision of the film
Michael Wilson also co-wrote the script for the film adaptation of another Pierre Boulle novel, The Bridge on the River Kwai. However, at the time of the release of the film, he and the other scriptwriter, Carl Foreman, were blacklisted, so credit was given to Pierre Boulle, who was also awarded the Oscar the script received, though I don't know if Boulle collected the award. In later years, Wilson's and Foreman's credits were restored to the film, and also later received their Oscars posthumously.
The set design was a major element of this movie. The ape's technology was some how 19th century-ish however, the look of the buildings and internal set designs were other worldly.
Minty, I've been watching your videos for a couple of months, but never got around to subbing. Your "This ain't no AI" screed won me over (plus the content of course). I'm so sick of AI voices in YT videos. Bravo for you! Regarding the film, it's always been one of my favorites. I know the prevailing narrative is that it speaks to racial tensions, and based on the culture and time when it was made, i'm sure that's mostly what was intended. However, in a modern light I think it can also speak to class divisions, that is, the ruling elites vs. the common man. I can see shades of populism in this film's messaging. Especially when it comes to the ruling elites trying to control the speech and the thoughts of the culture, and trying to restrict his underlings from "dangerous" thinking. I know that part was more of the creation vs evolution thing in cultural context of the time, but it seems that ruling elites object to wrong-think on any subject that threatens their power and influence. And I think that speaks to the universal themes of a great film, when decades later, it can seem just as relevant, even if the specific issues are different.
The biggest problem with The Tim Burton Reboot was not execution. It was the ending. Walberg’s character leaving to go back to a time and place where he had no one and nothing. When everything he loved was where he was made no sense whatsoever. It’s not executed badly, it’s badly written.
I love your videos despite the mispronunciations, Minty. In fact, that's half their charm. Afterall, some words need to be mispronounced, especially when they're not even spelled right to begin with.
Watched this and all the other original Planet of the Apes movies back in the early 70's at the cinema where my dad was manager so I got to see them all for free and as many times as I liked..wonderful memories.
One of the best SciFi movies of all time. I used this (and Star Trek) to introduce my wife to the genre. I don't think she ever became a real fan, but she was more open to such shows afterwards.
I've seen the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Good movie. Kind of leaves you hanging at the end. 2024 has been a difficult year for us on this side of the pond. It will get better now. Keep up the good work! Can't wait for the next video!!
I remember seeing it in the theater! As I remember, LIFE MAGAZINE did a story on it. For the time, it was an EXPENSIVE movie. I read the book and saw all the original movies. It was good. The “re-boot” you mentioned…..a total waste of film. You just can’t remake classic movies. Good job as usual.
"You did it. You maniacs, you blew it all up! Dam you all to hell!" is the iconic line at the end of the movie. Just watched it, search it on UA-cam. Incredibly strong ending.
I read the original novel (a long time ago). It's more of a satire along the lines of Jonathan Swift and less suitable for a blockbuster type film. The sequels took several ideas from the novel and even Tim Burton's re-make's final scene is inspired by the novel (although the explanation would have been different).
I was always a fan of the original movies, although Escape was my favorite because it actually had some good humor in it. You didn't mention it, but each movie after the original was given a smaller budget. I think that contributed to its decline. After the original, if you see groups of apes in a shot, freeze frame it and take a look. You'll see many of them with pull-over ape masks because they were cheaper. I actually really enjoyed the Mark Wahlberg version because the storyline follows the book more closely than any of them. I've seen people dislike its "surprise" ending because they felt it was just done to be different from the original, but that's actually pretty close to the book. The ape prosthetics were an improvement over the original movies' and were light years better than the CGI of the later ones. Besides, Helena Bonham Carter was one sexy ape. I watched the first of the latest series, but wasn't impressed and didn't watch any others.
Greatest surprise ending of its time. This move fascinated me as a kid and I still love it to this day!
I still remember the shock in the movie theater when I saw it, as I don't think I had ever heard so many adults gasp in horror like that. They should've expected it if they saw a few Twilight Zones. I really like the organic design of the ape city set in the original, and the apes’ costumes, particularly the effort that went into the leatherwork.

The ending still chills
One of my top 5 movies. Thank you.
Watched this and all the other original Planet of the Apes movies back in the early 70's at the cinema where my dad was manager so I got to see them all for free and as many times as I liked..wonderful memories.
Loved the Planet of the Apes movies and the TV series. I never even knew about the cartoon or the comic book.
Your TMNT shirt is amazing
Great job on these! I wish you would do one on the Elephant Man movie from 1980.
Minty, you've the BEST 🇺🇸😎
The ending was odd with that statue...oh my god, that was the statue of liberty!! It was earth all along!! 😮
Another awesome "10 Things You Didn't Know about..." video from Minty! Keep 'em coming, mate!
One of the best SciFi movies of all time. I used this (and Star Trek) to introduce my wife to the genre.
I don't think she ever became a real fan, but she was more open to such shows afterwards.
Your videos are perfect, and your hands are beautiful.
I can remember collecting the bubblegum cardss from the TV series as a kid
Awesome Work Bro, Thanks!!! Greetings from Helsinki, Finland
Charleston Heston is brilliant as Taylor. 😀👍
He was brilliant in just about everything and I have only seen a handful of his films.
I've seen the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Good movie. Kind of leaves you hanging at the end. 2024 has been a difficult year for us on this side of the pond. It will get better now. Keep up the good work! Can't wait for the next video!!
Love the Re Uploads !!
My FAVORITE 😊thank you, Minty!! I hope you decide to cover the other films 🤞🐒
"You did it. You maniacs, you blew it all up! Dam you all to hell!" is the iconic line at the end of the movie. Just watched it, search it on UA-cam. Incredibly strong ending.
I love the Marky Mark one. That's my Generation one.
And I LOVE the fact that your videos aren't AI generated. Thank you for that!
I have just remembered the Planet of the Apes musical from The Simpsons!
Please do a video on “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” it was a big hit in the 80’s that saved the Touchstone Pictures company.
I read the original novel (a long time ago). It's more of a satire along the lines of Jonathan Swift and less suitable for a blockbuster type film. The sequels took several ideas from the novel and even Tim Burton's re-make's final scene is inspired by the novel (although the explanation would have been different).
I love your videos they teach me so much about the movie I love.
One thing to remember, the original was G rated, even with the nudity
