As someone who designed AEAs KU5A can confirm we were thinking about using the fish filter material as well. Ended up buying replacement rycote screens.
Thanks Nathan! Now I have to wonder what other sonic secrets fish have been keeping from us. Are gills going to be the next VO life hack? Inquiring minds want to know!
A friend of mine, Dracomies, made a similar video a while back. This let to me seeking contact with Mr Hakan himself. I was provided with a publicly available parts list with the MSRP of each part of the Hakan pop killer lineup (filter and attachment devices). So there's a couple of things to clarify. The filter itself was only 17 pounds sterling at the time of release, with the gooseneck costing 45 pounds sterling. So the filter itself is only slightly more expensive than off the shelf aquarium foam. And there's a reason for this; it's a specific density. The price of the hakan basically comes from the R&D done to verify what density of that type of filter works best, as well as setting up a supply chain for it. So factually, there are some aquarium filters that are the exact same material as the Hakan. Of course, aquarium filters come in many different densities, and are often not to exact on this inside the marketing material. Just the provide full context
Thanks for the info, Rumin! That's great you dug deep and found out for yourself what the real deal is. Yeah, I don't begrudge any company from recouping their R&D costs, but when you pull back the curtain and see the wizard is just a hunk of fish filter foam, it's hard not to laugh at it. And thanks to all the R&D Hakan has already done toward this endeavor, it also gives me some great insight on how to DIY a pop filter for myself that has a smaller form factor. I remember some years back before I got my first Hakan, someone on some forum wrote all this BS about how Hakan formulated this foam in a lab themselves, blah blah blah, and made it sound like it was designed from the first strand of fiber to be acoustically transparent... LOL... ah, the internet.
I guess a lot of engineering hours went into making a perfect circle out of that fish tank foam, hence the nifty price tag. Prove me wrong, Mark, and make a perfectly circular cut out of that square. Epic discovery though 😂
they had to hire a university grad who is a schola a degree at cutting perfect circle..they had to pay him a generous yearly salary.hence the 100 dollar pop filter....@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
Interesting! It got me thinking as I just changed what they call a pre-filter on my air purifier, and I think the $30 filter I bought for it is also the same thing, only thinner! The (filter) plot thickens...
FILTERGATE! Ooooh, the plot does thicken. I mean, come on, how many different types of this same thing are being made? And probably all by the same 6 factories on a single block in Tianjin in the filter manufacturing district.
You can really just buy any cheapo pop filter, rip out the nylon, cut the fish foam sponge to size and glue it in. Or you could order one of these Hakan knock-offs from Aliexpress: a.aliexpress.com/_mP1R3Ru
I had that idea too, but was disappointed. The cells of the aquarium filter weren't all open (there were thin films of plastic between some of the "threads" of the cell -- imagine if some of the holes in a spider web were filled by a thin film, that's about that), which is probably perfectly fine for an aquarium filter, but no way it doesn't affect the sound. Of course, the aquarium filter you bought may be different, but compare it to the Haken, with light shining through. Do you see the same thing I saw in the aquarium filter I bought?
I imagine there are different forms of this same filter foam. Held up to a light, the one I bought seems to be of identical translucency and density, but I have a Chinese Hakan knock off where the frame is identical but the foam is definitely not as translucent. I haven’t used that one but the foam from this video seems to work as well as the hakan foam. Even though there seem to be more than one type of this kind of foam, I bet there aren’t many.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I have one Håkan and three Rycotes (though I have only one of the Rycotes with me right now). They're very similar, and the cells are all clean. I wish I could show you what I mean, to know if your aquarium filter foam is different from the one I tried (to know if I should try purchasing another, from another seller). Hm, well, at least I still have the sheet I bought last year... or was it the year before that?... Time flies. Anyway, I can at least test it again at some point.

Well theoretically, the price should be lowered after they re-coup their R&D cost. I am guessing that this won’t be, or isn’t the case.
30 ppi foam, ~1inch thick. Rinse it thoroughly before using it. You're welcome.
30 ppi?

Thanks Karl! Information saves lives. Um, not this information, but you know, some information.

I also like this one because it seems to cut the esses a bit but maybe that is imagination. I will have to try this some time.
Luckily, it’s pretty inexpensive to try.
Most the cost is the mount. They sell the foam for £17 last I looked.
Makes sense. Has to be the most expensive part. There are total knockoffs on AliExpress for $18 US

I actually heard about this being the same thing a long time ago, after seeing this video and that pretty much confirms it LOL.
Oh yeah, and as the previous purchaser of 2 Hakan Pop Killers, I can say with 100 percent confidence that you can't tell any difference in use.
I pretty much put a rubberband round the sponge and my microphone. I've always noticed something funny.
Try these. So cheap.
Well, ain't that a dandy!
Surfin' over to Amazon right now to by me....some aquarium foam filter.
Oh yeah. If you have an old cheapie pop filter just rip out the old nylon and trim the fish foam to fit and glue it in. Presto!
Thanks. Where to get the gooseneck and frame from?
