    The wrong nuts can kill you! Friend of mine bought used pickup with aftermarket wheels and drove for 6 months before his rt.frt. wheel fell off while passing a car while towing a boat.The lug nuts he thought were tight were bottoming out on back of stud and not clamping wheel shearing all the studs off.Luckily he just went into a front yard with boat and nobody hurt.

    thank you thank you so much for the detail info. not even pepboys, auto zone representatives knew this info. to bad it cost me a nasty dent on my ford bed side as the wheel came off.

      Autozone and O reillys didn't have the lug nuts I need so I went to a tire shop and they didn't know which lug nuts my car needs so now I'm trying out various lug nuts until I find ones that work. So far I've had one of my rear wheels fall off while traveling at a low rate of speed so I've been able to eliminate one type of lug nut not to use.

    One of my wheels fell off while I was driving down the road because the lug nuts weren't the correct ones for the type of rims I have. Luckily I was able to pull over without crashing. Now I'm in tbe process of trying out various different lug nut types and lengths with and without washer/spacers until I can determine what works for the rims not to fall off. I should have suspected something was fishy when I bought the car and there were several different types of lug nut on each wheel in varying lengths.

      Hi Jared Guzman,
      Most likely the wall thickness of your socket is causing the issue. You could try a thin wall chrome socket or a spline drive type of lug nut as shown in the link: www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/lug-nuts/lug-nut-thread-size/12mm-x-1-50-rh/brand/mcgard

      These will require a Conical seat - 45 degree lug nut. Here is a link to the correct ones www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/lug-nuts/lug-nut-seat-style/conical-seat-45-degree/universal/yes/lug-nut-head-style/standard/open-end-design/yes?N=open-end-design%3Ayes&SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Ascending you will just need to choose the proper wheel stud thread size form the narrow your results option on the left side of the page.

    Found out not all 60 degree conical lugs are the same. GM and Ford are different, where they start the taper, I can spin on a GM lug onto my 08 Torrent 6 or more turns by hand before it makes contact, while the Ford are lucky to make 4 turns. So when they replace your lugs due to a swollen cap, you need to make sure they actually pull enough threads, and with closed cap and using air tools, how does one know? So I opted for open ended lugs, they seem to have the threads start a tad closer to end as most lugs that claim they are solid, are referring to solid metal, not 1 piece, they still have a cap over the lug if you look close enough, Now some are actual solid, you can tell when one is in your hand, the balance of it, how the threads start at the end of the lug not in a few MM. I bought some lugs that claimed they were both Ford n GM and thought they were working until I torqued them down and noticed I could get them to spin a little every time they were retorqued, so I pulled one off, spun on by hand, counted the turns, and grabbed one of the OEM lugs and found out the OEM spun on 2-3 full turns more before starting to seat. I was going to try and 'carbon paper' the seats and look for contact pattern on the lugs, but just looking at them visually you could see the OEM were a tad smaller at the tip, so they fit into the seat deeper.. Wish aftermarket makers of lugs were aware of this as I do not feel like replacing all the studs on my hubs, but this may be the only options when they are short and the lugs too fat...

    • @craiggerlach5548
      @craiggerlach5548 2 роки тому

      Perhaps a tool to cut the seats a tad deeper. These were chrome plated aluminum 5 spoke on the Torrent I mentioned above that I found this issue with, but OEM lugs did seat deeper... Is there such a tool we could have for our shop?

    Titanium lug nuts are perfect 👌😁 Titanium lug nuts are 29% stronger and nearly 50% lighter than steel which results in a decreased rotational wheel mass. I know where can you get it at a great price 😁😁

    I own a dodge challenger 2010. Studs to short for mag wheels. Missing just a bit on Studs. What extensions do I need? About 1/8 inch to short

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  3 роки тому

      Hi Mario,
      These Dorman studs should do the trick-they’re commonly used on late-model Challengers, Chargers, 300s, etc. to accommodate aftermarket wheels and spacers. As a rule of thumb, the length of thread engaged in the lug nut should be at least equal to the diameter of the thread. So, since these are 14mm diameter studs, you need at least 14mm of thread length engaged in your lug nuts.

      @@Michael-jm5ix the 14 bolt is thicker than the 12 mm stud, the diameter of the 12 will always be smaller than the diameter of a 14 mm, thats why I am saying their is no way unless you do a wheel stud conversion from 14 thread pitch to 12 thread pitch, as that is one solution too. The safests option is to do a wheel studs conversion a guy from ebay called lugnutkingiv hooked me up with a wheel studs conversion that worked perfectly.. they screw in from the hub.. tbh they are my go to guys since they know more than I do.

    I have conflicting information. I thought the torque specification was 100 FtLbs as most light duty vehicles are for my 2015 Ford Edge Sort AWD 21" stock wheels. But discount tire showed me their computer system shows it at 165 Ftlbs. What should I do? Does that extra 65 Ftlbs make a huge diffrence? When I was a tech in the early days we would just run them on with the 1/2" air gun and call it good lol.

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  4 роки тому

      Yes, for the 2015 Ford Edge Ford does recommend 162 lt/lb in the factory manual. This would be when using factory Ford wheels and lug nuts. This sec should be located in the vehicles factory manual or by contacting your local Ford dealer.

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  4 роки тому

      Yes, you can paint them but the paint will most likely scratched up from the socket. If you do paint them, don't get paint on the seat area where they contact the wheel. Paint can get soft if the wheels get hot, leading to loose lug nuts. Also, if they are chrome lug nuts you will need to strip the chrome first.
