- THE PRE-PIXIES COLLEGE DEMOS. Not Pixies songs. Recorded by Charles Thompson (not yet Black Francis) before forming Pixies. According to defgav.com these songs were recorded in 1984. Original tape didn't have titles so these are fan given ones.
1 - Keeping In Time 00:00
2 - Draw Attention 04:00
3 - Silhouette 07:23
4 - Gemini 10:33
He makes it sound like anyone could write songs, and yet writes songs like nobody else.
Heath Adams his voice is something else. Carries all the songs with his fantastic sense of singing. So even if somebody else could write similar stuff, it's highly likely it wouldn't sound as good! Hehe
Well, isn't it true? The _real_ limitations are, if anywhere, only in your head! But, I don't recommend don't trying to copy anyone too much; that's not really a straining rule, it's more on target to stop trying to be a cookie cutter Chevrolet as you're an individual. Consistency can be useful (depending on context) and yet where's the fun in a stupidly draining routine?
Most accurate definition
It's inspiring as hell
Charles admit to writing most of BossaNova at the last second and wrote the songs on napkins. I still love the album and BossaNova shows how genius Thompson was. Writing all those songs off the top of his head. Keep doing it to it Frank Black!
The Where Is My Mind kids won't find us here
Sill a good one tho
I just found y’all… uh-oh
Hahaha
*FOUND YOU!*
Dipshit
Sometimes reminds me of Daniel Johnston, thanks for sharing!
Amazing comparison. There is something in common there. The deep Americana running in they veins
Yeah really I hear it too especially in the vocals o hear the similarities how they write their melodies. I love it!
I heard Daniel Johnston for the first time a few weeks ago, and the first thing I thought was how Francis Black must have been inspired by him.
Amazing- the first track "Keeping In Time" has that "Here Comes Your Man" feel on the first prog verse-- this is so cool.
it is what became "here comes your man" its a early version of it
steve steve Not sure about that given that HCYM was written when he was 15. He’s like 19 here.
@@FaxanaduJohn i knew it was a early song and read on wikipedia he wrote it when he was 15 like you said.Im sure there were many cuts of it before the song we know that made doolittle.
steve steve I see. I apologise for dismissing your point. It seems you may be correct.
pensé lo mismo
You know someone is a talented songwriter when the songs sound amazing on just an acoustic guitar!
Wow, this was fun. Charles proving that he is one of the greatest vocalists ever, even from the early days. That originality and playfulness is maybe only second to .Bowie and a few others.
just a minor correction, Gemini is 3rd and Silhouette is 4th... man, I hope these Pixies videos never get taken down, there was a user I think his name was CathodeRay and he uploaded tons of rare Pixies concerts, but one day they all vanished and I wish I had saved some
:( its so sad
makes you wanna start a band right now
You can really hear the Gordon Gano influence in his voice and the influence this had on Kurt Cobain. Cool hearing Kim in the background on the last track.
A continuum from Lou Reed and the B-52s
Kurt Cobain probably never heard this lol
In these early recordings I hear a lot of Tom Verlaine/Television vocally and melodically
Frank makes weird cool.
You can really hear the Cars influence.
+1
I'm guessing Kurt Cobain never heard these demos, but Keeping In Time reminds me a lot of Do Re Mi, which was one of Kurt's that never made it past the acoustic home demo stage either.
So great, a song
Cobain said publicly in an interview that the Pixies were Nirvana's strongest influence.
@@garygregg9707 I think he said that to be cool... They so clearly are maybe the largest influence on their sound. Probably being self-conscious and trying to throw journalists off the trail.
2:32 About A Girl, anyone?
LOTS of Elvis Costello influence here. Especially "Keeping in Time" and "Silhouette. I've been a fan of the Pixies since '88 but, I had no idea Charles was an EC fan until hearing these songs.
I saw an interview where he said Elvis's "This Year's Model" was a huge influence on him and Joey while the Pixies were forming.
I'd wager a lot of money you haven't been a Pixies fan since '88.
I'm hearing a lot of Tom Petty influences coming through.
Yes very elvis going on....esp song 2...people don't talk about how much he stole from Jeffrey Lee pierce later though. I mean it's almost criminal.
just keepin tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime.
Love that make shift mic stand.
That last song has the seeds of “I’m wasting my time, just talking to you... the Greens and Blues”
Love it ..sounds great and familiar, welcoming...on first listen... My Frank Black training has paid off!
These have an early Talking Heads feel to my mind-via-ears.
Love it. I think I've found everything there is to find fb related. Great post
to tu to TO to tu to to to
Would love to hear a modern studio recording of these, although I don’t know how fit franks voice is for these songs anymore haha
Could be a hit if recorded by Weezer
damn, these recordings got me to write my first actually decent song, hell yeah.
I played bass with Charles and Joey in Amherst when this was recorded. These songs were recorded for Joey and I to learn. I had this cassette for years..then I gave it to Charles years ago...cool to hear it again.
That's so fucking cool!
That´s so cool man! I guess this is the closest I will get to ask this to a "pixies member" but how was it when you heard Frank´s lyrics or just his songs in general for the first time? I mean they are not your common pop songs they are kinda weird
El Padrino sorry for the late response...I knew immediately that he had something special. He was also pretty prolific...all these songs were written in one day.
Genius
I'd buy a vinyl bootleg of this...
Franck black is a great melody maker and a pretty good singer
The seeds are here.
Where does someone even find a tape like this
On Napster. 20 years ago almost everything was shared on Napster including these songs.
@@bocswu I meant who had the actual tape, how did it get preserved all that time.
God damn these are awesome
one of the greatest voices in musical history ❤❤
Charles siempre tan juguetón haciendo música
I like how his mic is being held by some sort of broom handle
6 people in the wrong side
But who was pre-Pixies? Must have been derivative of something.
F***ing GREAT! Love it
Getting a bit of a Bryan Ferry vibe from Keeping In Time.
Man .. those tracks are amazing ... he's killing me... such a great songwriter
Is that Kristin Hersch at 07:23?
yep, throwing muses era
Not yet The Pixies? What’s on the door of the van 😊
I miss the 1980s. This makes me miss it even more. Thanks Frank.
The chorus of the first one sounds like 'My First Night Without You' by Cyndi Lauper.
imagine Francis n Cobain meeting and starting the 90s beatles forreal
startervisions hehe that would've been something. You never know though maybe they wouldn't have contrasted each other enough for it to be as awesome a collaboration as one could hope
c'mon man, i'm fan of both and you get kurt all wrong. he was a rock legend jaja and he did screwed himself. frank is more healthier and more geniously diverse in themes, i agree, but the things that kurt got out from his heart really breaks me all the time. he killed himself cause he couldn't deal with the pain of a messed up stomach and the pressure of compossing.
You're kinda full of hate
I'm fan of lots of stuff. Let's better just talk about how much we love black francis, our lord and master :P
he'll make u feel like salomon, be one of ur babies even if you have no one
I've always wondered how bad ass It would have been to see Nirvana and the Pixies tour together, but who would have opened for who?!?!? I personally would have the Pixies close the night, but I guess there is no point in arguing hypotheticals.
keeping time is a fucking hit , why didnt he ever release it?
because it evolved into "Here comes your man"
Old school. These songs and your name reminds me of the Subbacultcha listserv group I was on way back in the early 90's. Thanks for sharing.
Where did you find this ?
thanks
is there anywhere to get this anymore? link is dead
I'm surprised that Gemini is SO hard to find. I wished they included it in some B sides record. I've known that they sung this song since forever, but it's so hard to find, what a great song. I don't even know if it's original or a cover, either way it's a great song.
70' were not so far to 84... so old
Nice, thanks!
Heard a little teen spirit in song before last
It oddly reminded me of No Queen Blues.
@@mrxmenguy Yes!
Jooeeeee!!!
Genius!
Brilliant stuff
Super cool!
Kin with short hair in the clip at the end which is not typical.
Memorable times... 🤟💀🖤
Hey no tienes la letra de Keeping in time graciasss ??
Very Elivis Costello vibes...
draw draw draw
Thanks for posting
Frank Black a vendu son âme au diable pour ensuite pondre par centaine des chansons qui tuent...quand on entend ça.

no
this sounds like shit! i love it
I really like early Pixies... surprised these songs weren't better.
Harsh - they're just kids here at Uni still learning their craft. Its prob. the recording quality thats just as dodgy
These songs are amazing
Oh please pal, as first songs written these are incredibles... Sure i bit too long , but thats part of learning the craft ... lets be serious here ;P
A lot of Brit shoe gazer influence in the first song. By Silhouette he has basically invented grunge. Easy to see that Elvis Costello was the guy who got him really playing the guitar.
Shoegaze didnt exist in that time...1984....by the way
In the pic at 5:00 Charles kinda looks like a young Leonardo DiCaprio
I've been a fan of The Pixies ever since David Bowie thought liking them would improve his 'coolness' factor
David Bowie is a musician. Musicians don’t like music to be “cool”. Bowie liked The Pixies because they made some of the greatest rock and roll music at that time during the late 80s.

Your confusing your motive's with Bowie's quite deserved, and authentic admiration.
