  • Preserved Railway 2022: Standard Gauge Highlights
This year saw the centenary the merger of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railways and London & North Western Railways, a series of special events were held to commemorate this event were held, with the main events taking place on the East Lancashire Railway. One of the highlights was the return to traffic of L&Y Pug Number 19. We see the locomotive in action on the East Lancs and on a visit to the Ribble Steam Railway.
L&Y 0-6-0s 520244 and 52322 both featured at events on the East Lancs together for the first time, with the Ironclad returning the BR black this year, having initially returned to steam in its Green Dragon Railway Children livery.
Away from the L&Y & LNWR, but keeping with the black locos theme, was the return to steam of LNER A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley, which spent the year in LNER Wartime Black. We see the locomotive on its inaugural main line run over the Settle to Carlisle route, on a main line test run near Wrexham and on its to the NYMR and Severn Valley were the locomotive was paired with a rake of LNER teak carriages. Classmate 60009 Union of South Africa spent the second half of the year on display at the Bury Transport Museum, before moving the following January to its new exhibition space at John Cameron’s farm in Scotland.
One surprising piece of news this year was the purchase of Steam Dreams by Jeremy Hosking / Locomotive Services, this including B1 61306 Mayflower. Mayflower is seen on its first LSL tour 'Pennine Moors Christmas Cracker' seen at Gregson Lane and Copy Pit.
Our focus shifts to Bulleid Pacifics, firstly with Braunton attacking Whilpshire Bank. 34092 City of Wells is seen at Burrs and Summerseat (with a freight) during its last season in traffic before withdrawal for overhaul on the ELR. 34067 Tangmere returned to steam as the principal Northern Belle locomotive this year, a duty we see it on.
The Bluebell celebrated 150 years of Terriers with a special event featuring Terriers Poplar from Kent & East Sussex Railway and W11 Newport from the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, with Stepney and under overhaul Fenchurch on static display at Sheffield Park.
S15 506 visited the Severn Valley Railway for their Spring Steam Gala from the Mid Hants Railway, while 46100 Royal Scot visit the East Lancs and Keighley & Worth Valley Railways for their Spring Steam Events.
Further Stanier action is seen with three preserved Jubilees, with Bahamas joining Royal Scot at the Worth Valley and then seen double heading with Leander on the Great Britain XIV railtour. Galatea is seen earlier in the year on one of its final railtours prior to overhaul.
Next we take a look at British Railways Standard action on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, firstly with visiting Std 5 from the Great Central Railway and then home based 76079 passing under Larpool Viaduct.
The focus then moves to the Furness Railway Trust initially at Preston with locomotives in the workshop over the Heritage Open Days, which also saw Furness 20 in action on the Ribble Steam Railway. The Trusts GWR 0-6-2T 5643 is then seen on the ELR during its last season in traffic before overhaul.
While one Great Western tank bows out, another returned to steam at Peak Rail, were Pete Waterman’s 5553 is seen on a 30742 Photo Charter. The Severn Valley Railway’s Pannier Tanks 7714 and 1501 were on tour in the early Spring with 7714 at Keighley and 1501 on the East Lancs.
Vintage Trains action with GWR 7029 Clun Castle in Liverpool and Chester. Didcot’s 2999 Lady of Legend is seen on the SVR on its second visit. Also at the SVR Austerity ‘Welsh Guardsman’ is seen double heading with GWR 813, both locomotives suffered failures later in the year though.
‘Welsh Guardsman’ is seen at Embsay before its return to the SVR, with Illingworth seen in action on photo charter duty on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway.
Further industrial action is seen with Lucie at Levisham, Ann & Gothenburg on the East Lancs and Princess on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite.
Taff Vale 85 is seen on its visit to the NYMR, including with double heading with former Lambton shed mate Number 29. 85 is also seen at home on the KWVR.
Going full circle back to the LNWR/L&YR theme, we see the return to steam of Coal Tank 1054, with running in turns on the ELR and then footplate experience duties on a parcels train.
Snow hit East Lancashire in December, where we see L&Y 52044 and 52322 on festive trains.
Finally we have some night time steam, with 3P20 Photo Charter action on the East Lancashire Railway at Baron Street and Castlecroft yards.
