you are right that it is colder inside in Australia! We have very poor standards of insulation so it feels like the walls are barely even there. In other countries which reach lower temperatures outside, houses tend to be 'double brick' with 'double glazed' windows, which is way less common here in Australia. Years ago I spent a December in the UK and I had to go buy summer pyjamas because I was so warm inside!
