    Hello There! I will not be making a chopper in any type of stainless steel. No stainless grade has the shock resistance I would want for that type of application. We will soon be offering the CPM-3V blades with a variety of coating options though, which will enhance the corrosion resistance. The steel doesn't stain too badly in any case and can readily be cleaned up with #0000 steel wool if you do get some stains on it.

      I’d love to have a 3V chopper. What I have in mind is basically an El Chete with a flared pommel. Survive!, if you make this it will sell, I’ll buy one for sure.

    I just received a photo of that blade I think. Really nice work. For an outdoor knife I really like to keep the hardness around 60Rc. It has outstanding toughness and great edge holding at that hardness, with the heat treat Peter's does. I offer the stainless option for something more corrosion resistant than CPM-3V. I will be offering CPM-20CV as my stainless option moving forward, as it maximizes corrosion resistance and edge holding, while still having good toughness for a stainless grade.

    We have begun delivering knives as the sheaths have been arriving. A good many have been delivered, with more going out tomorrow. As long as the sheath supplies hold up I should have most everything out this week.

    It is a multi step tumbled finish. Two hours of tumbling to produce the stone washed finish and another two hours in a different media to brighten it up a bit.

    Hey Chris, I would say that someone just didn't fully tighten the back barrel after aligning the front screw. Although the current single length screws don't completely fill the center and back barrel, there are enough threads engaged for a full strength hold. If you continue to have an issue, just unscrew them and put some medium lock-tight on the threads. Like I said, we will soon begin offering variable length screw kits in 440C, which will completely fill all of the screw barrels.

  • @Surviveknives
    @Surviveknives  11 років тому

    Hey there, this CPM-20CV we'll soon begin using was initiated by me and is a Crucible product, independent of any other company. Even when it was originally released as duratech 20CV by Latrobe, Crucible still actually produced the steel.

    @Surviveknives  11 років тому

    Yep, they sure will be. We are currently working on depleting the single length fasteners in 416 but as soon as those are gone we'll be making the switch and offering the new variable length fasteners in 440C on the website.

    CPM-3V is a high alloy tool steel, that is not a stainless grade. It won't rust up like a high carbon steel(1095, O-1 and the like) but it will develop freckles and eventually pit in a humid environment or if not regularly maintained. My initial thoughts on the flint is no but I will give it a whirl sometime to verify.

  • @Surviveknives
    @Surviveknives  11 років тому +1

    Hahaha! That's more like a 13. Yeah, I should have time to get those protos finished up soon. I'll shoot some photos and video when they are done. Just locked down a TW-90 for prototyping work, so it should turn out pretty darned nice.

  • @guyseiferd1397
    @guyseiferd1397 11 років тому

    Hey, thanks for the idea. I certainly will open some soup cans and perhaps some larger cans, that might be suitable for a larger hobo stove in an emergency. Things like nails and bolts though are an entirely different animal and I would strongly discourage any one from trying to cut any sort of high strength alloy or hardened material. I've seen a good sets of lineman's pliers jaws bend around a high quality thick gauge nail or bolt. Out of space, I'll continue...

    Hey there, we've been talking about a side by side like that. It will just take a good bit of time and effort, to get them all to the same spec, so a comparison would be valid. Perhaps once we catch up with production stuff a bit though. The ferro notch does NOT compromise the blade strength in any way at all. The tumbled spine is generally more comfortable to use without hard edges and it looks better. I personally prefer the tumbled spine but they can easily modified to a hard spine.

  • @moultonmotox
    @moultonmotox 11 років тому

    I would love to see a hard square spine offered for a true multi purpose survival knife. From scrapping tree bark for tinder to using a ferro rod. It would be the clincher for me.

    If i remember correctly, 20CV is a DuraTech product, not Crucible (CPM). Great vid tho. Hopefully I can check out the 7/7 when it comes out.

  • @Surviveknives
    @Surviveknives  11 років тому

    Haha! I knew you were going to post THAT video. That knife is made of Vandals 23, hardened to 63Rc. Those few extra rockwell points of attainable hardness, compressive strength of the alloy and a thick edge give it an advantage over the bolt. Aside from that steel not being commercially available in sheet form, the extremely high hardness would make it very hard to maintain the edge.

  • @guyseiferd1397
    @guyseiferd1397 11 років тому

    Continuing: Early in development I made a few knives that could survive being beaten through a bolt. They needed a really thick edge, which just isn't suitable for cutting the other 99.9 percent of things a person cuts every day. Wanting to make a functional and usable hard use knife, that is suitable for a wide variety of cutting tasks, I just tell people not to cut hardened materials rather than grossly overbuilding the blade. Hope that was explanation enough. I'm out of letters again.

    So far the Casio Protrek (previously Pathfinder) has been one of the best values in a watch I have ever owned. I'll never own anything else. They take any type of abuse I've ever thrown at them. Honestly the only reason I get a new one sometimes is because I get an itch to buy the latest design. lol

  • @thefishinglor6931
    @thefishinglor6931 11 років тому

    This may be asking a lot and I don't expect you to ever do it but if you're ever out of ideas and in the mood I would like to see you pit all the top steels against each other just so we can get an idea of how they all compare. Maybe clash the blades against each other to see which one is tougher. Bend til break to see how much weight is required to break or bend a blade. I'm also curious, instead of putting a ferro notch possibly weakening the spine, why not just square off the back?

    On a more serious note I own a GSO 4.1 in M390 which I put a zero convex on and it is a joy to use.
    Have you ever tried running cpm3v @ 62-64 hrc for the smaller blades? (no need for you to buy another type of steel?)
    I like M390 and cpm3v for their fine grained carbides and that they roll rather than chip...
    Thank you for the great stuff you put out and for understanding stuff like: lets make a handle that is comfortable but not slippy... Kudos!
