starter cartridges only print some tens of sheets. May be it's empty
may be the internal sponge is too old and do not reelease the ink properly, or the filter over the print-head is dirty
Which cartridge do you have? HP number 337 is am inkjet cartridge

Thanks for this very informative video. I now could diagnose the problem, there are horizontal lines of same distance on the paper due to marks on the drum. Even though these marks on the drum are very difficult to see, they cause the toner to sit there and therefore are transferred to the paper. I believe it was caused by the fact that I haven't used the printer for about one year, and the toner left on the drum, from the contact with the wiper blade or de developer roller, affected the surface of the drum.

this is a good diag video, but most people won't have replacement parts on hand until they go through a few cartridges.. then they can salvage spare parts in working order

Thank you for your video. my brand new canon cartridge 137 black is too light. when printing small size words, it looks too light to read. The colour also seems not to be stable in every spots on the page as the old cartridge. I tried to clean the roller but it was still the same. please help.
In the printer settings there are some adjustments, quality, remove the toner save option and so on. You could clean the transfer roller

What if the streaks on the paper are from all the toners CMYK - Are all the toner cartridges defective or is it another problem?
thank you for your excellent illustration, but I have a different problem and I'm not sure about the reason. the problem is a grey area (about 0.5 cm) is appeared in the upper right side of the paper only when I use duplex. The single side printing is perfect but the problem raised only with duplex.

+Ramy A Mosa it's difficult to say, probably a damaged or dirty paper feed roller. try cleaning them with alcohol
If this only happens with duplex it suggests something dirty/defective where the paper redirects for duplexing; so one of the duplex rollers maybe?

my printer is working bad. papers come out of the printer with black strips and stains. paper no longer remains white.
i see the toner dirty with black powder. Cleaned it but it doesn't improve. it keeps on coming out. does it mean the toner is bad and should be replaced? or is it something else?
Its the original toner and didn't go through half of its lifespan
It depends on which printer do you have. May a problem with the wiper blade, the charge unit or a toner cartridge near the end of its life

Probably the problem is the toner cartridge, may be the toner is damp or too old. the wiper blades of this cartridge are made of rubber that become weak after some time
a lot of unseen dots or particles will be there, that can be seen when you use a polymaster for offset printing, what would be the solution, i changed both the drum and blade and the toner as well. but the persists, can you help

But I observed that as I continue printing the print becomes brighter than the previous. But it does not become bright like that normal brightness. I will be very grateful if you help.

At the half way point not a mention of the word LASER! Of course the video is about the toner cartridge. I say the fast food industry continues to make the case for the DIY to desert! The evolving physical implementation of technology, that is those factors such as materials and miniaturization, has made hands-on maintenance almost impossible and impractical while driving down manufacturing costs and thus market prices. Is it far less costly to: disassemble a faulty device, then find a questionable (if not certain) failed component, then search for the replacement (if neither are too old!), pay the price including shipping or go get it yourself, wait for the part to arrive, install the part and hope you’ve solved the problem than think of buying a replacement toner cartridge under some form of warranty? At this point you’re halfway to the cost of a whole new printer! There’s a guarantee: you could do more damage along the way. The video discusses various parts of the cartridge that if damaged would possibly be the cause of a particular print out defect. The simplest is toner issues. The video claims no 2 toners are exactly alike. Whoever thought that a toner is not a-toner-is-not-a-toner? A toner “mismatch” or mixing could further the problem. IF the toner is thought to be the problem then the video suggests using compressed air to blow out the old toner from the cartridge BEFORE replacement. Apparently this method provides the best assurance that “old” toner is purged from the cartridge! What kitchen-drawer-screwdriver has the facilities for this method? Then again note the health issues section under “toner” in Wikipedia. Leave these toner troubleshooting instructions for the professional recycler. The only lesson from this video is trade it in and buy a refurbished or new toner cartridge or regret being naïve and then do the same.

Hi viandant5, I have cf210a 1/2/3 and Doctor Blade spreads powder in 2 sides, but not in center. This problem repeat when like use SEAL(for full re-manufactured). What do you think?
+Lenin Cahuasqui may be the side felt are compressed, try rough them up using a small screwdriver. but probably the foam of the doctor blade is in wrong position

Without knowing which is your printer it's difficult to say. may be the magenta cartridge.

What can be wrong with a toner if the black color becomes whitish? But if I shake the toner it later prints correctly.

How about the bottom left corner(about 1cmx1cm area) of the page appears the ink wont stick enough and has loosened off, thus the ink appears as if it was dabbed with a sponge and not solid-looking.what could be the cause?

@@viandant5 ricoh SP 3510DN. The problem usually just appears when there's less than a centimeter of margin and mostly just the bottom left 1cmx1cm corner. I also notice along the left side within the 1cm margin region, there appears to be sporadic "loose" ink that smears off after the page has been stacked with other pages. The test page looks fine except the said 1x1cm bottom left corner has the "loose" ink. Otherwise, in normal pages with 1" margins, the problem won't be seen. The printer has 170k+ printed pages total and both fusers and rollers are "empty" on the printer resource page report. Toner is about 75% full.
@@viandant5 Ricoh SP 3510DN . The problem seems to affect the page within the first 1cm of the left and bottom margins. The "looseness" of ink appears worst at the bottom left within the 1cmx1cm area and reappears about 3" above that then another 3" higher then the problem almost no longer appears in the upper 1/3 of the left margin area. A normal page with 1" margins would look quite flawless as far as i can tell in a normal text.

Toner powder felt inside the printer bocz of faulty Developer roller. i cleaned it but still printer not gives clear print.... faint print are coming... no issue with toner.... before this incidence print was clear and its best quality... checked with new toner also

yes no clear print.... might b fuser dirty bcoz of ink dropped in printer and it speard all over...

+Yogesh Nilekar no, you don't need to replace te fuser, but a vacuum cleaner is useless. clean the fuser rollers with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated cleaner

Thank you for sharing such useful information. I am not sure what is the problem with my printer. I am having Canon MF3010 and refilled it for the first time. Taken around 600-700 pages. Since refilling print out is coming very light, I can read them but not that bright it used to. I have cleaned all the parts and taken out the old toner powder before refilling. Please help.
Did you change the drum? Also look at the magnetic roller or at the magnetic roller blade
No, I had not changed the drum, just refilled it with ink powder. It's a new printer and I had bought it 14 months ago, lifespan printout is only 600-700 pages. Just to update- It's a bundled toner 925. Will new toner with minimum usage can have drum or magnetic roller/blade issues?
HP made the components of the cartridge very weak, it's possible you have to change the drum

I have HP 1020 plus printer. Recently i refilled the toner. After refill i'm having 2 issues. 1. Right side of the print out is darker than left side. 2. Page background is coming grey. I already changed wiper blade, doctor blade, drum and magnetic roller. Kindly help me with this issue.
the background may be caused by a low quality, damp or not proper toner, or the charge roller. the other defect may be caused by a broken magnetic roller bushing, magnetic roller not seated correctly, charge roller, side plated not correctly installed

It depends on which operative system do you have. search with google "mfc 9340 brother driver" and click on the brother website.
I have a mix between random vertical streaks & ghosting on an HP color laser jet pro MFP m4477fdw.

Check the toner roller, is the toner evenly distribuited? Clean it with a dry soft cloth, may be the toner is dump and it made clumps on the roller

Thank you very much for this video! I've been an IT professional for more than 10 years, but never held a position that entailed very much printer support. As such, I haven't done more than replacing toner cartridges (and solid ink, and inkjet cartridges). My personal printer at home, an HP LaserJet 4000dn, started acting up and this video helped me to diagnose the reason toner was building up on a thin strip of the drum. I really appreciate that you describe the cause of the malfunction and explain the purpose of the individual parts of the toner cartridge, and not merely state a given part is bad.

I took the toner cartridge drum out of my Brother MFC-8810DW and took it outside and lightly banger the drum on a rag to get the toner ink that accumulated in a pan beneath the or adjacent to the roller out of the cartridge. Then used compressed air to blow out this powered ink until it was gone. Turned the roller by hand and cleaned the roller of toner ink with isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth several times, till clean
Took cotton tip applicators and cleaned any surfaces I could get to on the drum, including inside the slot that the green tab runs on. Now first printed copy no longer gets a 3 inch +vertical black line on the right side of copied paper when printing from the computer, so far anyway. Seems to do the trick. Just clean up the drum. I did not take the drum apart.
Thank you. My issue was that the developer roller was COATED in toner. I to clean it and let it dry and i printed a page and found out there was little to any ghosting, after printing a cleaning page and printing more, the ghosting is super faint. this probably means it needs to be cleaned a bit more or replaced. Either way, you have saved me tons, thank you.

We all allow what should be simple to become nightmares..There are 1,000 guesses but no one really knows unless a guess hits the fix. This is crazy..These boxes should be easy to set up,easy to use and easy to fix. All we wanted to know was why does this nightmare cannon print half page very light the upper half is perfect??? But no it can't be a simple fix..We have been trying to get help TWO DAYS TO NO AVAIL. They have not perfected these boxes and they sling them on the market creating a nightmare including computers.

I had the problem with gray pages. I just took the toner cartridge out of the drum assembly (sold as two separate parts) and very carefully blew the toner sitting loose in the drum assembly out (careful not to spit on it or accidentally blow the toner in my face). The prints come out clean again now. I did that outside and over the grass, there was not much toner there to clean out. It made a big difference in print quality. It made it print like it was new again. We had the printer since maybe 2005 or sooner and have only changed the toner twice. The first one was the starter cartridge that usually doesn't come with as much toner as one bought separately. Then the second one changed was another full one. I never needed a new drum yet and never had any issues with the printer other than ONE paper jam. Of course my laser does not print color but I had an inkjet and I hated that thing, inkjets are nothing but trouble.
My problem was that the toner was clumped & not being applied onto the developer roller. I solved it by running a the corner of a clean A4 paper into the slit behind the roller. No need to remove the roller. You should be able to slide the paper into slit/mouth at the back compartment of the roller where the new toner is stored. This problem happened after I refilled & living in a humid place, the toner powder clumped & blocked the slit. My printer was printing very faint half pages. Very similar symptoms with the drum ground contact fault & low toner powder fault IE not enough toner being applied to the paper . Ricoh 311 printer. Hopefully this helps someone. 😀

I removed the yellow cover (or whatever colour) that protects the ink from the new toner about a year ago and stored in the storage room. I took the toner out to use but the printer still says replace toner. Could it be because the ink has dried up?

Thank you for this video. Apparently my Magenta cartridge had sprinkled the toner all over the place but thankfully not on the actual negative drum or printing drum, or whatever you call it. Cleaning all the cartridges and gears of cartridges with damp paper towel removed all those weird random dots on different papers. This video was helpful. Thank you.
Cleaning my drum roll with isopropyl alcohol fixed most of my issues (thick straight line and some random repeating smears). Noticed the toner collected a lot of dust as well... Did it without this video (yolo, old printer). But this just confirms my own conclusion. :)

We have a laser printer where a crudely written '!' seems to impress itself as the rollers turn about. I keep thinking someone crudely impressed the '!' into the drum roll or the charge roll. People are too timid to say that it was vandalism, but the '!' looks too articulate to be a random artifact. I live in an apartment community, and I suspect the mark was purposely imprinted onto a printer part to cut down printing costs. Is it possible to vandalize a laser printer to do this?

Last missing tip: a few toners are lightly ferromagnetic. You can clean the mess with a strong magnet.

I have an OKI c821 laser jet printer, mainly used for printing on T-shirt transfer paper size A3.
It has developed a single short horizontal line on the prints. It's always in the same place, possibly blue, bottom right hand side, 8cm long starting from the edge and about 3cm up from the bottom of the page. It does not repeat up the page so I really don't know what it is. If it was the blue drum wouldn't it repeat up the page?
+aharz1 it's difficult to say, probably it's not the drum but it may be related to the drum unit. it may be a bad contact into cyan drum unit, or it can be the drum with a defect and the charge roller discarge though that defect

Hi. I have a brother 2130, it makes 3 fingers faint from the right on the paper. I opened it and cleaned the knife and it didn't fix. There is also a 3-finger dust-free part on the magnetic roller under the blade, is it because of this? There's dust everywhere else. How do I fix this?
Yes, probably this is the problem. if the roller is not damaged you can clean it with a soft cloth.

I have a problem not exactly the same as shown in the video (12:50). Prints have three white horizontal bandings across the page at the same distance (about 7,5cm). White horizontal strips have about 7 mm height.

viandant5 HP LaserJet 1018. And now I can see there are sometimes 4 white stripes. Depends where on the printout first stripe appears. If at the top of a page than 7,5cm interspace makes it possible to fit four stripes on an A4 sheet.
Krzysiek Krzysiek 75 mm is the drum. the defect is related to the drum. may be a broken gear, a bushing. check if on the drum there is an adhesive sheet, or if it's dirty

Hi, great video, i have an issue with my canon 1023, i bought a new toner cartridge cause it gaves me an error of out of toner with my old cartridge, so bought a new and after install it gives me the same error, i've removing the seal correctly, and i can see the magnetic roller full of toner, same as the developing unit, what can it be?

May be the toner sensor inside the developer unit, but first of all start cleaning all contacts and inside the printer near the toner cartridge and the developer assembly
My LaserJet 4100n now has grey output. Transfer charge roller inside the machine is covered with toner. If I clean it, I can get 20-30 good pages, then grey background returns.
**Tried a new cartridge (same manufacturer & [2017] vintage as cartridge it replaced) and get 20-30 good pages then problem returns. Try another new cartridge? Or.....???
check if there is toner on the drum. may be the wiper blade is too old

Help!!! Our processor ordered "compatible" cartridges for our Xerox Phaser 6700. When installed, the printer displays that the cartridge is not compatible. *First thought was that the little chip needed to be changed. Took the chip from the previously working cartridge and installed to the "compatible". Seemed to work, but not registering the level of toner correctly.
**I this an issue because of chips not interchangeable for standard capacity and high capacity differences?

Yes, probably the chips are not interchangeable and once finished they will no more accepted by the printer

I am using Xerox phaser 3117. I have cleaned Wiper blade and developer rollor blade and re filled toner. After closing, the toner is seen coming out through the sides. What would be the reason? Pl. help me

do you have already reassembled the cartidge? the developer roller is held in position by the contact with the drum, so during refilling it's possible that the cartridge leaks toner. also, may be the developer roller blade it's not in position, look at the foam at the side of the blade. look at the developer roller mylar sealing blade.

I am using the hp printer and 3 newly bought cartridges (cf217a/eurotoner brand) are printing out only half page 😮. However, as I change to another cartridge (world) the printing comes out perfect..this is driving me crazy 😒!!

I think the sensor is defective. Probably you have to change it
