- The Yellow Spotted Salamander migrates each spring from it's winter woodland home to vernal wetlands for breeding. Roads have been placed along this migratory path causing amphibians to cross roads during rainy evenings in spring leading to high amphibian mortality rates. Volunteers Katie Williams and her 8 year old daughter Jillian came out this spring to assist frogs, peepers and salamanders across the road. Leann Kanda, Associate Professor of Biology at Ithaca College has spent years researching Spotted Salamander's population at Thomas Road in Ithaca, New York. Kanda has microchipped salamanders, using a chip reader each spring to detect if her salamanders have made it through the winter and more importantly the spring migration.
