Jack, If you want to make retopology even better on yourself, look into polyquilt. Its a built in free asset and it will make your life INSANELY better, its basically quad-draw from maya.
Don't ever do it by manually creating verts its a mess, and not the way people do it anymore.

Sucks that Displate takes 2-4 weeks to validate an artists work, making it stupidly slow...

    Hey Jack,
Regarding your personal stress and challenges lately, I'm really sorry to hear you're going through that. You're a huge inspiration to everyone here and what you're doing is important.
Regarding your imposter syndrome- you've almost certainly heard this already, but it's something everyone in your position goes through and is totally normal. Nothing is wrong with you, and you're making impressive progress at an equally impressive speed. I've been doing game dev for around 7 years now and you're catching up to me at a pretty alarming rate (please stop haha).
You address so many important questions that all of us face when learning game dev that are not answered in the bulk of tutorial content for whatever reason. It feels good to know that we're not crazy and that others feel similarly. Game dev is extremely difficult, combining aspects of so many different art forms into one, and its nice to have a sense of community as we struggle to learn together.
I'm also really sorry to hear about your breakup. I know the time directly afterward can feel really shitty, and I'm sorry you're having to endure that right now. I know it's cliche, but it'll only get better over time, and you have a swarm of people here for you if you need to talk. Wishing the best for the both of you.
I'm also sorry to hear about the financial uncertainty of your current situation. I know it can be uncomfortable to ask, but I and many others are happy to support you (I know I'll be subbing to the Patreon while you're going through this) because you're doing important work, but you're also human and I'm really glad to see you're putting your mental health first and taking a break. It's unsustainable to push yourself endlessly, and you're doing the righ thing.
I hope you're able to have a good break despite the issues your facing at the moment, and just remember that everything is going to be fine.
Looking forward to your return, but take all the time you need. Love you man! ❤

Honestly, it's insane how much progress you're making. It's always extremely intimidating to start developing games, especially with long videos, confusing game engines, and programming languages, and the fact you're able to surmount that is already a lot. And more so than that, the rapidity of it all is really admirable. Also, being able to make actually interesting games design-wise is a huge asset.

Just wanna say this is legitimately the ONLY video out there that actually describes the whole pipeline of making characters/assets for games. Most just say "bought it", "modeled it", "just got it from a friend". Most 3d modeling channels don't talk about UV maps & retopology as much as you do because they're not game focused it's actually nuts how long it's taken for a video to go over the whole process from start to finish so people who want to make a 3d game now understand what they'll go through.

  • @developingtank
    @developingtank 11 днів тому

Your comfort of talking to the camera is something I hope to one day acquire for my own channel. True on camera charisma.
Having experimented (while crashing and burning) with so many of the same things you cover in this video I found it incredibly engaging to see your take on discovering and understanding these processes. All of this stuff is hell and the world of 3D art and game design has so many layers to it that it is best example of "you don't know what you don't know" that I have ever come across.

Of all of the UA-camrs that I really admire and enjoy watching, you have to be one of my favorites. Watching your content just always feels so genuine, not like I’m watching a video made by a company manufactured for my enjoyment like a lot of other channels. You really appeal to me as someone who is down to earth and inspires me to create. It is because of your journey of following your passions to become a full time UA-camr and documenting the whole thing that inspired me to make my own videos for my own channel which I’m doing now. I hope you take a much needed break Jack and know that your true fans will always support you (I myself am from the rdr2 video days lol). Keep your chin up and keep just being you and I guarantee you will continue to be successful.

Earlier this summer I was torn between two projects I wanted to work on; something in game-dev, or a film made in unreal engine. I was juggling back and forth constantly until you started your own game-dev journey. So basically- I saw you doing your thing, took none of your advice and make a film instead- But! It did very much jump start that project!
I'm 6 months into animating penguins and still loving it. As I'm also working in the game industry by filming trailers, I too find it hard sometimes to be inspired to do your own creative work when a lot of creative energy is taken up by a job. But, I think it also proves to me just how important it is to take time for yourself, and keep a nugget for your own JUICE and make it a priority to have something just because you love it.
Anyways, just wanted to say thanks and random people do watch and very much appreciate what you do.

I hope you feel better after taking the break. UA-cam, game development, art, even life can be hard. I've had a lot of things happen to me that has effected my content and artistic journey so I can relate (to some degree everyone's situation is different) with self-doubt, anxiety, and sadness. But you make great stuff man, i cant wait to see what you make next year and I hope the month of rest helps

Hey man, I wanted to wish you a great December. Your channel is my opinion the best and most high quality gaming channel on UA-cam. And you game dev stuff nothing short of inspiring. This should go without saying but it’s of course totally cool to take a break for mental health.

This is the reason I come to your channel specifically on every upload. I don't delay or wait and I make sure to watch it instantly. Clever and goofy jokes. Honest opinions and feelings put into your words. But the human aspect of it all. You aren't afraid to explain mistakes, or how you did something wrong. Maybe why you feel something is incorrect. In a game you play, or your own personal journey in making something. Absolutely keep going man. Life can mess you up. But just know there's people like me who see you and go, "Damn, that guy really has the stuff". Cheers.

Great video jack. I was trying to learn about 3d modeling but got overwhelmed so quickly after making a donut and running into ton of complicated stuff and remembering nothing i did that week. It's cool to see someone that is new to that and understands the struggles, gives hope and motivation to continue getting into it

Jack, thank you for all your videos so far. It‘s really inspiring to watch you grow and try out different approaches. As you said in the ending - I can‘t imagine how much pressure it must be for you to go full time. Loved all your videos, even the ones with topics that weren’t initially for me. You have a lot of fans that support you and I wish you all the best for this journey and your personal life. I think it is a great decision to look after your mental health and not get burned out in the process. Hope you can use the time to deal with the personal stuff and have friends and family over the holidays to support you. Much love from germany

Take your time man. Love all your content, but thats because of you, there so many people doing game content but youve got a personality that sets it apart. Youve also motivated me to explore this as a career. Ive begun some self eduation on game design, and explored schooling for it. Its a lot to learn and you are right it seems intimidating at first. Cant wait for the new channel, it couldnt be coming at a more perfect time. Get well and take care of yourself, thats always more important than anything else.

Take that time off and get your mental right. Between being a content creator and just leaving a long-term relationship has got to be a lot, especially around the holidays. Most people understand that youtubers generally take this time of the year off or at minimum slows down. Its a time to reset, be thankful, spend time with family & create some new goals for the new year. Hope you understand that even through these tough times, a lot of us are going through very similar situations and love these videos as a way to escape from the craziness of life. Looking forward to your next video (whether it be a video game review or more steps on this game dev journey) & have a merry Christmas man

Hey Jack, It is really inspiring to see your progress, I know we don't see the behind the scenes but it looks like you are giving huge steps. You are making me considering start a similar project like you are, btw, I have been using blender for over 10 years and still haven't used a lot of tools included in blender. Just remember that sometimes taking a day off is the most productive thing you can do, I am struggling with that too.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

Sounds from everything that you definitely need to slow things down and take a breather. Those situations are normal life events but it doesn't make them any less crazy-challenging to deal with and you're being smart by realising that it's taking its toll on you, some people burn themselves out entirely before realising.
Hope you feel better soon and looking forward to the next video you release, whenever you feel you're ready to do so
