    moore's law is seriously catching up... the energy usage will eventually start to scale linearly at some point which isn't sustainable. time to start talking about good games and less eye candy.

      You're a fool if you think traditional rendering is going to continue the way it currently is. AI is going to revolutionize gaming once the hardware is capable of running it in real time. That future isn't as far off as you think.

    • @marsMayflower
      @marsMayflower 6 місяців тому +2

      @@chrisg8339 but the power that it takes to generate said visuals will just scale with the hardware, unlike the past where we just created transistors at a fraction of the previous generation's size. that's not the case, anymore, so now we're going to have to feed more power to the components. good luck with that.

      @@marsMayflower , hence the trend of chiplets, larger dies, 3D transistor logic layouts, and ASICS. There's research into electron/hole mobility material improvements too, but those are likely a ways out. ASICS alone immensely help with RT since they're direct logic gate implementations without general compute overhead, and can be designed to complete the same calculations in far fewer clock cycles. From here, since the problem is highly parallelizable, you just scale up the cores. With that said, a shift away from Moore's law has started and more now is focused on power efficiency, which can either reduce power usage or be used to further scale up compute at the same power target.

      @@marsMayflowerThat's not entirely true, because the hardware is just one part of the equation. The majority of performance improvements, that allowed games to look as they do now, didn't come from higher clocks and more shader units, but from smarter algorithms.
      Path tracing for example was invented as a much more efficient way to approximate the rendering equation, which in combination with other improvements like more efficient BVH traversal and better denoising now allows it to run in realtime, while an older distributed ray tracing algorithm would still require minutes or even hours to render a single picture, even on modern hardware.
      Those algorithms also often can be massively accelerated by putting a bit of specialized circuitry into the hardware, which doesn't take up a lot of die space and doesn't increase power consumption that much (or even lowers it by doing thing more efficient). DLSS for example could of course run on normal shaders, but it would be so inefficient that it probably would be better to do no reconstruction at all. By making a couple of tensor cores available in new hardware, which are very good at doing certain types of calculations, you can suddenly do such things without having to go to a much smaller process node to keep die size and power consumption under control.

    • @NeovanGoth
      @NeovanGoth 6 місяців тому +4

      I've played the PC version for a couple of hours yesterday, and while the art design is great and the image quality absolutely gorgeous (at least with DLAA), one of the first things I thought was "Ok, this looks like a last-gen game". Not in a bad way, it is beautiful, but there is a lot of stuff that doesn't really feel modern anymore. The lighting is very static, shadows are missing, occluded areas are often too bright, the SSR completely falls apart at the screen edges, shadow maps are shimmering and have no proper contact hardening, and so on, and so forth. It's great, but it could be even greater, without requiring any changes to the art design, just by having better lighting.

      @@NeovanGoth.yes. I agree, but still better than many "RT ready games". RT is good, Alex loves everything about RT (even when nothing different can be seen by a "normal" person); but it is STILL far from providing "very noticeable" better lighting.

    • @NeovanGoth
      @NeovanGoth 6 місяців тому +3

      @@rubensoliveira3247 Yeah, there I'm with you, the difference of current implementations in comparison to very well made traditional lighting like in TLOU1 can be quite subtle and fairly hard to notice.
      Actually I think the benefit will become more obvious when smaller studios start to use sophisticated RT solutions more often, as it allows them to reach a graphical quality that otherwise would require a lot of manual work that is just not possible given the available resources. Even software Lumen with its clear limitations already looks so good in AA games like Robocop. People in the comments often call developers lazy for using resource hungry real-time lighting instead of just properly lighting their scenes with more performant traditional techniques, but with limited budget it just makes more sense to put the available resources into creating the actual content, instead of tediously moving around fake lights every time a map is edited until it looks good again.

    I think given the physical problem of approximating the ray propagation to an eikonal equation, It is possible to use ray tracing for volumetric fog, but you would need to have a lot of rays.

    • @NeovanGoth
      @NeovanGoth 6 місяців тому +1

      Apparently there are already algorithms for volumetric path tracing that basically just add a scattering term to the rendering equation. Actually I think this is a case that shows the beauty of this method: If you already have a real light simulation (as opposed to a collection of independent hacks), you can relatively easy add additional features. Want caustics? Ok, add a term that simulates refraction. Want volumetric fog? Ok, add a term that simulates scattering. And so on, and so forth.
      The problem seems to be that scattering, as you already suspected, needs a lot of rays and sophisticated denoising to produce usable results, so it may be out of reach for real-time applications in the near future. But theoretically? Why not?

    • @TheKillerJin
      @TheKillerJin 6 місяців тому

      @@NeovanGoth Interesting, thanks for the answer! Yeah, it makes complete sense that it could work. Another option would be not to use ray tracing at all for volumetric lighting, and just use another discretization like finite difference, finite element, or finite volume.
