    I've had On Mars sitting on my shelf for a year now. In fact, I own 5 Lacerda games (On Mars, Vinhos, The Gallerist, Kanban, and CO2), and I haven't played any of them for several years. I think they pass the complexity sweetspot that makes me want to play it, and if I take too long between plays, I have to relearn the rules, which makes it even harder to take it out of the box.

    • @thelastmeeple
      @thelastmeeple  Рік тому +1

      Yes, Lacerda's definitely need to be laid on the table with some frequency, otherwise they'll go bad.
      The thing is you need to be in the mood for them. And when you're in the mood for a heavier game, you rally up courage and pull a Lacerda out.

    My two favourite heavy board games are deffinatly War of the Ring and Twilight Imperium. Amazing games that can take a whole day to finnish! The only problems are the price tag and they can sometimes be difficult to get on the table. I deffinatly recommend cheching them out!

    I don't own many heavy games but my top would be: Lisboa; Golem; and I would consider these three as heavy too, even though they are in the 3.5 mark: Underwater cities. Scythe & Terraforming Mars.
    Have you played all Lacerdas? Gallerist and Lisboa? Lisboa is my first Lacerda, and would love to try his other designs. they look just very nice.

    • @thelastmeeple

      Haven't played Golem yet.
      From Lacerda's, I just haven't played Escape Plan. I think Lisboa is a mechanically solid game, I just don't like the theme nor the aesthetics of it.

  • @musicforall1859

    I’ve heard On Mars is really difficult to learn. That its not intuitive, etc. is it really hard as some make it to be? Others say Tha Gallerist also hard to learn? I played Lisboa and takes a game to really grad all the concepts (but that’s pretty much with any game). What’s your thoughts on that, Fla?

    • @thelastmeeple
      @thelastmeeple  Рік тому

      That is pretty much true with any Lacerda game. When I first got into learning them, I had to read the rules and watch a video. They might be overwhelming at first, but you learn to like them.
      For me, all of his games are very thematic, On Mars is no exception. I have played it so much, that I actually know the game by heart.

    Pretty solid list which makes me a little sad though, because I could not find the joy I hoped for playing Lacerda. So far they just felt too dry and too much like math tests. Did you play Maracaibo?

    • @thelastmeeple
      @thelastmeeple  Рік тому +1

      Lacerda's are more of an acquired taste for some people. I find most of them to be really thematic, but yes, you have to account for a lot of stuff and plan well ahead.
      I did play Maracaibo, and I really like it for the theme, but I like Great Western Trail a little bit better for the mechanisms. I almost wish GWT was remade with Maracaibo theme on top.

    • @Johannes_W
      @Johannes_W Рік тому +1

      @@thelastmeeple Yeah, especially Kanban looks very thematic and I studied that stuff, so it certainly is a no-go for me as a theme in my leasure time :D
      Uh, I find Maracaibo and GWT are barely comparable when it comes to game feeling and they both sit on the top of my list since years now. But I am a Pfister fan boy anyways, not just for his heavier games.
      I guess Tekhenu would also be in my top 10 heavier games now that I think about it.

    • @thelastmeeple
      @thelastmeeple  Рік тому +1

      @@Johannes_W I hear you, no more work on top of work xD
      Maracaibo, GWT and Boonlake can all be boiled down to move up to x spaces and then do an action where you landed. Yes, they all feel very different, but I guess what is really a miss for me in Maracaibo is how one player can decide the pace of the game (when a player goes around and comes back to port, all the other players are pulled afterwards), which is not as critical in GWT.
      I haven't player Tekhenu yet. Need to get around doing so.

    • @Johannes_W
      @Johannes_W Рік тому

      @@thelastmeeple Better don't boil down games too much or you end up with the conclusion that you don't need more than like 10 games, because they all do more or less the same with your brain :D
      But I do love the pressure you can put on other people in Marcaibo and I feel like it is a very sharp balancing of tactics and strategy with a tense engine building. Well, to me it is the best eurogame I have encountered so far, but I also know enough people who don't feel the greatness and I understand the reasoning as well.

    @ObsidianKnight90 Рік тому

    I know it's been talked about to death but Gloomhaven / Frosthaven is a great heavy board game. and not just because the box weighs a ton. The wide variety of characters, each with their own unique decks of cards, each of which has two different abilities, creates a massive number of possible moves and actions depending on the scenario. It's absolutely the kind of game where you get 'in the tank', mulling over your options and trying to figure out the best way to overcome the obstacle in front of you.

    • @thelastmeeple
      @thelastmeeple  Рік тому +1

      I didn't consider regular Gloomhaven since JotL came out, because, for me, it replaces the first (and JotL isn't heavy enough for the list). It's just too big of a commitment, and the latter worked perfect for me, JotL is all I ever wanted Gloomhaven to be. But you're right, both Gloomhaven and Frosthaven are eligible for this list. I should have considered them.
      Thanks!

  • @MarkB-uu5we
    @MarkB-uu5we Рік тому

    A few things, firstly nice video thanks for putting it up, plenty there I would agree with. These are all good games, I am not sure if they are overly heavy but fully understand this is in your collection and these top 10 lists are always subjective. For me it has to be over 3.9 to be heavy, I find anything below medium or medium to heavy. So my top 10 would probably include a few Lacerda games like Kanban EV, On Mars , Vinhos, Lisboa plus others like John Company, Brass Birmingham, Anachrony, Gaia Project and a few others. It is always subjective.
    Finally keep in mind that your comment regarding BGG having just about every game made is not correct. They have about 20,000 games plus versions (for example different versions of Battleship) on their site which represent what is known as the modern board game community. However, there are over 200, 000 games out there you can play. For example you won't find every version of Monopoly on there nor a number of lesser known or played games. It has pass the pigs but not stack the cats. :-)

    • @thelastmeeple
      @thelastmeeple  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for your comment.
      Yes, I do agree that how heavy a game is is always subjective to each person. I play games with a lot of different people, and for some, anything above a 3.2, they already consider it heavy and complex, and for others, heavy must be very close to a 4 and above, so I went with what felt heavy for me while still acknowledging everyone's opinion.
      And while BGG is a really useful tool, it is true that they don't list ALL board games that exist. No one needs to know about all 500 different versions of Monopoly that are out there, it just lists relevant and important information for nowadays modern board games.

      @@thelastmeeple Don’t get me wrong, the removal of tier ones at the end of the Canal phase is not everyone’s cup of tea, but gameplay and thematically I think it’s one of the best features of the game. The way I view it is that the Canal phase is all about setting yourself up, seems almost contrived to say that your setup will be removed once it ends but if you play it well it won’t, then you can get off to a great start in Rail. In the games we have played you tend to only score around 50-70 points in canal, and ensuring you either have a ready supply of your own coal, or 1 rail away from a market at the start of rail is absolutely key and what makes that whole first phase interesting. I think that there is a big misunderstanding of the “heaviness” rating for Brass as it really isn’t that heavy, sure the concepts around coal/iron/beer and how they can move/be purchased are initially tricky, but not really that hard, the true heaviness on Brass is playing the game well, not the multitude of decisions available.
      Thankyou for your feedback, hope you get chance to give it another go!

      Looks like I'm one of the few who thinks Brass is just OK. I guess I nees to give it another try.
      The thing about crystal palace that bugged me is how it keeps pulling you down even if you're trying to do a good job. If you're new to the game, you're probably going to have a hard time against someone experienced. The money is so tight, and you won't realize how important it is until it's too late. And it snowballs, the player who's doing great will keep it like that, the the one who's doing bad will keep getting worse.
