The real secret to a high performance engine (as GM has discovered finally) is to abandon the push rod actuation of the valve train, either a Desmodromic, or chain driven DOHC layout with 4 valves per cylinder (to enable an ideal breathing cycle) gives the best results. This layout also removes the need to keep increasing the engine's capacity (and weight) by giving the ability for much higher revs. The DOHC chain driven system, precludes valve float, allowing for a smaller capacity engine to rev much higher. As demonstrated in GM's Corvette. This is hardly a secret really, it is simply that the USA has long taken a different direction, owing to the extraordinary low prices for fuel. The forced induction path is also an excellent approach, but again, with a smaller capacity engine, a higher revving unit can still deliver high torque and HP outputs.
Camillo was my friend at the time he was doing the GT (I"ve kinda lost track of him lately). He and Sid Chiang were working on Petunia with Chelsea Lau as studio Chief (or maybe she was just a manager at the time). Both Sid and Camillo did some very aggressive and modern design proposals. J Mays didn't want to go new with it. J wanted to go retro. It's a shame that the world will never see what Sid and Camilo actually wanted to do. One earlier iteration of the retro version of the GT design had a much shorter front overhang and smaller more compact proportions overall. It still housed all the mechanicals that eventually ended up in the production car but the smaller car would have been faster and lighter. J didn't like it because it looked less impressive so they added the extra length. J sent a lot of good design work back into the clay oven.

@CrossEyedLion - The '05 and '06 Ford GT had a 6 speed manual only, and the current Ford GT has always had the dual clutch 7 speed semi-auto. Even the Corvette is now auto. only.😩
Hats off to Ford for pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering!
My employee number is 337, but more importantly my boss has an 05 GT40, blue with white stripes and the infamous condensation in the headlights, lol.
He owns several iconic cars - '61 white Mercedes Benz 300 SEL, '69 Camaro, '65 Mustang, and several other old classics, also has the '16 Ford GT and C8 Vette. The luxuries of owning 6 dealerships 😂 - Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Range Rover, BMW & Mini. Reminds me, he has a BMW i8 as well, it's actually pretty cool.
My employee number was also 337 when I was in machining some years back. Those sounds like some really nice cars btw, he must love them!
A top 10 performance engine video could definitely come from this at a milestone(video 50/100 etc). Everyone talks about significance historically but noone seems to have the guts to put a personal ranking on cars/engines on the basis of cost and performance alone.
3000 on the stock block? Sweet mother of god
It’s crazy, if you actually find pictures of 05-06 GT blocks they are very robust with a lot of webbing and closed deck. Still blows my mind tho😂
@@337speed yeah no modular, coyote, or ls doing anywhere close to that
Look how ahead of it's time the GT90 was. That thing would sell like hotcakes today and I don't think the price would matter.
RWD doing 300 in a mile. Meanwhile AWD Lambos are spinning out and destroying themselves all over the place doing the same standing mile. That thing was built so fine. There will be faster cars but probably never another with the perfect combination of a manual shift mid engine V8 goodness with beauty that will make the dead rise just to come take a look.
Amen to that brother
I'm a GM guy but I have zero problems acknowledging the Ford GT is a masterpiece on 4 wheels. Too bad they didn't make some more of those 300mph beasts. I doubt I'm the only one who'd love to see several overly arrogant European auto manufacturers shut up and put in line for a bit..... If for any reason it would have shaken up the entire auto industry and the responses would have been interesting.
Mercedes T80 fom 1939 does 650Km/h on the Autobahn. Mercedes built exact copys of the T80 new.
Scott: that’s OK, I’m a Ford guy all the way… and a closet Chevy lover. 🤣👊

@@aerialcat1 there's only 3 chevy cars I like the corvette, the camaro and the El camino the rest are crap.
@@Dr.Mcstaby It’s their engines that I like, in 1955 they finally built one that could beat a Ford Flathead V-8.
3000hp on a stock block is fucking nutty. kudos to ford, that's genuinely impressive.

The rear side shot at 4:30 replete with flames is epic!
I love how many routes you go with this series love every upload
Johnny Bohmer! They've gone like 338mph!
I remember this guy go and well over 300 miles an hour a years ago... I had a magazine that had a review of it Heavy Hitters. Brought that to work and shit on my buddies who are into imports and Chevy's
Ah yes, the same guy who never ran close to his claims at events that he didn't have the equipment set up at lol
@@Wopadas You mean the one that they gave this certificate from Guinness too... With the facility where everyone goes into his high speed testing at that guy
@@chrismathes3647 You realize that he paid for Guinness to come out and they did nothing but show up. Equipment was set up by his people. Same guy tried to pass off his sub 1000rwhp C5 went 252mph in the standing mile. If that doesn't set off your BS meter, I've got a bridge to sell you.
@@Wopadas OK 👍
You do understand everyone pays Guinness and they just show up and verify measured times? He's taken 3 different Guinness records... Callaway built the sledgehammer that went 255mph with something like 800 RWHP so I don't know maybe his Corvette went as fast as it did I wouldn't consider hes probably more credible than yourself.
@@chrismathes3647 Guinness do not verify the equipment is set up correctly. Callaway’s Sledgehammer did that on a 7.5 mile oval. Bohmer’s claims are in a standing mile, you need a lot more power to do it in that distance.

One of the all time greats, stories of the might of the Ford GT rage through the halls of Valhalla
In 2006 the owner of the project I was working on bought 3 GT40 cars and 2 GT500 cars and had them delivered to the shop. Those GT40 cars were beautiful and I remember the whole underside of the GT40 cars were completely covered by sheets of aluminum. The GT40 cars were blue with white stripes, white with blue stripes and black with silver stripes. The GT500 cars were blue with white stripes and white with blue stripes, both GT500 cars were signed by Carol Shelby on the dash. The GT500 cars were cool especially the white with blue stripes one as it came with the top tier race package, however I was all about those GT40 cars..
What I wanna know is who makes tires that can survive 300 mph for that distance?
You have to ask the manufacturer to custom build them per your specs. I know Continental and Goodyear are pretty good at that. They won't be cheap though!!
Goodyear has tire going 330 mph
Not a big deal but pretty sure it was a lysholm twin screw blower not eaton which only uses roots type which im pretty sure had not released their tvs rotors yet so it would be the older 60 degree 3 lobe rotors like the early gt500s with their m122 blowers.
The factory rated 550hp was underrated. I sponsored a VMP Dyno Day in late 2007 at the Ford dealership in Darien GA. where the dealership had one, he put it on the Dyno, it made 551rwhp with less that 10 miles on it.
My Uncle was a dealer and sold a Heritage edition(Gulf colors), I was there when the owner got to pick it up and got to go for a ride. I dated a girl who's cousin let me drive his that was at 800whp that clutch is still the heaviest I've felt. The Gulf car was dyno'd at a car show and put down 560 something at the tire stock. The Terminator Cobras in 03-04 also underrated the HP numbers.
@@Loulovesspeed rwhp is lower that crank hp. There is about a 12% hp drivetrain loss using a chassis dyno! The 05/06 Ford GT engine hp was closer to 620 hp.
And no the TTV6 GT will not blow the stock '05 or '06 GT into the weeds! The current TTV6 GT will never see 300mph even with JATO rockets strapped to it!
@@mobeydick37 - I am referring to STOCK machines, not some hot rodded creation for doing 300+ mph in a straight line. IMHO, that proves absolutely nothing! Here are the specs, so you tell me which car is quicker, faster and handles better!

2018 Ford GT - 647hp twin turbo DOHC V6; 0-60 in 2.9; top speed; 217mph; 1/4 mile time 10.9 seconds; weight; 3,047lbs.
No more calls please folks, we have a winner and it's the 2018 Ford GT (with a 6 cylinder engine) Lol.

I made 1200whp through a BONE STOCK 2019 mustang GT engine/trans/diff/axles by adding twin turbos, on e85. Ford really does over engineer some of its modular V8s. I only dream of owning a Ford GT..

One of my most favorite cars of all time. Thank you for making a video on it!💪🏽
Camillo was my friend at the time he was doing the GT (I"ve kinda lost track of him lately).
These cars are still increasing in value!! You see them n you are immediately drawn to them, pleasing to the eyes and a wonderful treat for your ears 👂 !! Great content!! My 2010 GT500 has its heart ❤️ !! Thanks great content
@Ricardo Corbie - Yes, they are increasing in value, as long as they are not modified to make a zillion hp!
I cannot fucking believe that stock block handled 3000 hp and over 50 fucking pounds of boost
Its not so stock , it was predicted for racing and manufactured like that
Back when I worked at a Ford dealership and being a new tech fresh out of the ASSET program, I was all about the svt line and taking all the classes and getting certified to work on the " big boy " toys. I remember the day we got two of these and they got shipped sealed and on casters. We had to push them into the show room . If anyone remembers tousley Ford in white bear MN , that parking lot was a down hill 😕 " if this 150,000 dollar car gets away from us this is gonna suck " .
The original Gt90 design was going to use 2 Yamaha SHO v6 engines joined to make a v12 with 4 turbo units. During the design phase Ford stopped using the Yamaha engines and switched to the modular V12 custom engine. The Yamaha SHO v12 also had 4 turbos and 720 hp.
How come I keep thinking about Alonzo Bowden when you are narrating? It's very impressive motoring vlog. Very accurate and revealing. Keep up the good work 👌
Great to see this well documented video. Thank you.
Ford's biggest mistake was installing an overrated, disappointing "Ecoboost" V6 in the 2017-2020 models. They do not compare to the great Ford GT of 2004-06. That robust, intensely engineered supercharged V8 was the best thing that happened to Ford. And that is why the Ford GT from 2004-06 remains the greatest production car ever made by Ford.
why is the EcoBoost overrated?
@@cesarpalmos8235 it’s not overrated it’s a great engine. Won Ford GTLM class in LeMans lapping the corvettes. Just would’ve been nice to hear V8 roar when you floor it in a Ford GT.
@@CoyoteFTW I think it is one of the greatest small displacement engines there is. It is great to hear a v8 roar, but the Ford GT is a perfectly engineered in my opinion. Just like the 05 models, I believe the new GT has a lot of potential. A 700hp version of the new GT, which is only 40 hp more than stock, can actually beat a McLaren Sienna on the track.
They ran the EcoBoost Ford GT at 800horsepower around Daytona.
@@jamesturner2126 I knew they had the 700 hp variant in the MKII, but didn't know they pushed even more power. 800hp is incredible from 3.5 liters.
