  • When it comes to public transportation in Fiji, buses are a practical and economical option. Here’s what you need to know:
Public Buses: These buses operate around towns and cities on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu (the main islands). They take passengers almost anywhere within the district. While they might run on “Fiji time” (meaning schedules can be relaxed), they offer an authentic glimpse into Fijian culture. The buses are old, with cushioned seats and open-air windows. You can close canvas shutters if it’s raining. Local buses use an e-ticket system where you buy disposable tickets from the driver with cash.
Express Buses: These buses run between Fiji’s towns and cities, often getting passengers between Nadi and Suva in under six hours. They cost around FJ$20 and come in various qualities. Most express buses have air-conditioning, comfortable coach seats, and even play movies for long-distance trips.
Minivans and Carrier Vans: 10-seater minivans operate in town centers, picking up passengers by the roadside. They’re usually priced similarly to buses but get you to your destination faster. Carrier vans, which are 4WD trucks with an open back, are another option. However, some operate illegally and drive recklessly.
Remember to enjoy the local experience while exploring Fiji.
