Walker was amazing in strangers on a train. I always felt so bad for him. His wife, who was an actress, left him for a Hollywood producer which sparked his drunkenness and erratic behavior. He died when he was only 30-32. 💔

Farley Granger was, but RW was deeply in love with Jennifer Jones whom he married in NY when they were students at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. They were both called to Hollywood, she being chosen by David O. Selznick to star in "The Song of Bernadette," and he for many roles. Selznick became infatuated with JJ and promised to make her the greatest star ever. He divorced his wife, the daughter of Louis B Mayer, head of MGM, and JJ was ambitious and divorced RW, taking their two small boys, whom he adored. Selznick then cast JJ and RW opposite each other, during their separation and before she married Selznick, as tragic young lovers in the wartime film, "Since You Went Away", which was cruelly heartbreaking for RW. He was a devastated man. If you ever come across the book, "Starcrossed", by Beverly Linet, in a store that sells old books, read it. It will break your heart, too. He was only about 32 when he died. He was a popular and successful actor whose whose life was destroyed by a powerful man's obsession. BTW, RW then briefly married but it couldn't last. He did not die from alcoholism or a drug overdose, but from a sedative injection given to him by his doctor. RW didn't want it. He said it would kill him, and it did. Such a tragedy.

His doctor foolishly gave him an injection of a medium-high dose of seconal on top of that, without either ascertaining whether or how much Robert had previously been drinking, or having handy the necessary resuscitative equipment for a respiratory distress condition, which can be caused when combining tranquilizers or otherwise having too much of any individual tranquilizer. Robert Walker’s breathing stopped immediately and without resuscitative equipment present the only outcome could be death....the lungs fail to circulate oxygen, then the brain is deprived of oxygen, which will then stop the heart. It was a terrible, unfortunate accident that might’ve been prevented had his doctor acted more presciently under the circumstances. There’s a dual biography on him and his ex-wife Jennifer Jones called ‘Star-Crossed’ if you would like to read more about him and his unfortunate death. I love the ‘Autopsy’ show, but they likely wouldn’t cover Robert Walker unless they were absolutely out of any ideas whatsoever. They tend to do people who are at least reasonably well-known. Robert Walker died 70 years ago, his name is known only to the most serious of classic film buffs, unfortunately.

Efforts to resuscitate Walker failed and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. He was aged 32.
I think the fact that both of them were gay in real life, but having to hide it at the time, was something you can feel through the screen, Hitchcock must have loved having them play these characters because of all the gay undertones. In real life, Granger was openly gay and Walker was straight, although it is possible the two actors had a romantic relationship during the few months of filming and the few months after (Granger had a habit of being attracted to his male co-stars, and Walker was very depressed and lonely, and it's possible he opened up to Granger because he needed comfort from another human being)...as Granger hints at here, but of course he was from a different era and a gentleman, so he would never "out" an affair he had over five decades earlier with a man who has long since passed.
Killer Joe Actually there are more testimonials of Robert Walker being a supremely kind gentle man brilliant actor than being 'crazy'. He had a very difficult time after his wife(Jennifer Jones) had an affair left him for David O Selznick/ wealthly much older film producer screenwriter film studio exec. He adored his 2 young sons by their account was a wonderful father. Unfortunately for him he was unable to fall out of love with his wife which led to the drinking. Robert btw retains much kinder rep in Hollywood than his ex-wife JJ. Robert passed away suddenly in 1951at 32 from allergic reaction to sleep medication witnessed by a fellow actor.

Keep in mind, she never told her side of the story. Robert Walker Jr stated a few years ago that privately she would say to her sons, "Why in heaven's name did I ever leave that fellow?" While "Star-Crossed" is an excellent book, the author was clearly biased against Jones (most likely because the actress declined to be interviewed). Since Walker loved her so deeply, she must have had redeeming qualities.

I loved Farley Granger...... He was so popular that ITALIAN DIRECTOR Luchino Visconti cast him as the lead in the great Italian film SENSO in c. 1944

Yes I saw how he died on a TV show. Autopsy I think. So sad and the rumour was that he drank himself to death.
