Hello my loves!!! Today we are talking about the horrifying story of the Radium Girls. Also known as the Ghost Girls, these women worked in factories in the 1920s & 1930s, painting numbers onto watch faces, in order to make them glow in the dark. This is a tragic story but also one that reminds us just how strong women truly are.
If you all enjoyed, give me a thumbs up & SUBSCRIBE. Until next time... ILYSM.

Thank you so much for telling the story of the girls. I am a 53 yr old woman, my great aunt worked at Radium Dial in LaSalle, IL. Her story, like the many ladies - deserves to be heard. Her name was Helen. She did not have "the worst" effects, but did become infertile and suffered breast tumors. My family is from Ottawa IL.
It's a hard thing alone to not have kids I'm glad this video could help
I'm glad you've shared your families story with us, and I sincerely hope you're all well wherever you all are today ❤
I relate so much to your aunt because i too am infertile but tumors too. 🥺 God bless that poor lady 😔
i hope you’re all doing well and healthy 💗
Never forget. Thank you for being a voice to share her story. 💔
Hearing about the poor woman's jaw falling out just makes my teeth feel weird. This whole situation sounds absolutely horrible. I'm glad they won the lawsuits but it's sad that it ever even happened.
I feel you it makes me feel sick to my stomach
the fact that these factories paid triple the normal wage just proves they knew the risks and didn’t disclose them to the public
Oh yeah, they absolutely knew. They tried to discredit the girls, claim they had syphilis and shit like that. Video mentioned it.
This is one of the big reasons I don’t always trust something simply because “everyone” says it’s perfectly safe...
The first time I heard of the radium girls was the early 1990s when Timex came out with Indiglo watches. They were expensive but I saved and bought one. Wore it to my grandparents house on Christmas. My grandparents freaked out saying I was going to die from radium poisoning... "Like those poor girls..." is what they said. The next day I had called the better business bureau...found out that I was not the only one who had called. Thousands had called asking the same question about radium.
Omg I just realized I said Marie would walk around with that vial of radium twice and it’s going to drive me NUTS LMAO
EDIT: I just realized there was another section where I repeated myself so I edited it in the YT studio! You may still hear me say things twice in 2 different spots of the vid until it updates. Sorry guys. This was my first time filming & editing a sit-down vid like this in several weeks so I was super rusty.
7:30 is also a little bit repetitive lmaoo
😂😂😂
@@zoopness BRO how did I miss that lmao
I dont know why but watching in my TV the audio doesnt match with you talking
@@fofinhaclarinha22 mine is doing the exact same thing
My family would tell me stories about watching the radium girls walk down the street and glow (in Orange, NJ, early 20th century). My grandmother and her sisters ended up as garment workers (similar to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory), which was still bad, but not as fundamentally deadly as ingesting radium. Thanks for covering the Radium Girls, and maybe the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory can be covered soon!
The fathers of modern forensics and medical examiners offices Dr Charles Norris and Dr Alexander Gettler had the grim task of examining the remains of several of the radium girls (including Amelia) to help prove the illness came from the radium.
They did so by putting Amelia's bones on covered, unexposed x-ray films and leaving them over the weekend.
The bones were radioactive enough that they left near perfect outlines on the films.
Wow. So very tragic. We just don’t know until we know.
THIS IS WHAT WE SHOULD BE TOLD IN US HISTORY!
I was just watching a video earlier today of someone customizing a doll based off the radium girls and was going to deep dive further into it. Such a happy coincidence you posted this video just as I’m on my lunch break!!
Omg etellan?
omg a p1ece who watches loey??
@@luvvshuu ofc, I have great taste bahahah
I am a 17 year old high school student who participates in competition show choir. This year a group of 8 girls did a show on this, I was in awe. Ever since seeing this show I have been obsessed with the topic of the radium girls.
Im doing the show right now!! Actually currently wearing my show shirt haha
Great topic! History, even or particularly dangerous history needs to be taught today. Good for them!
@@frograts6816 where did you compete?
Poor Amelia...I wholeheartedly hope her soul is resting well and painlessly as we speak..
Please tell more stories like this! I loved this video and I learned so much. How horrible I'm so thankful to those girls 😭
I was a part of the play by DW Gregory about radium girls this past fall! I played Kathryn and Mr. Roeders daughter, Harriet. It shows the companies side a little and it’s really impressively written. It was nice to share their stories with our audiences
As someone who has ADHD and is constantly distracted by shiny objects, I can understand why someone would use radium. The pretty green glass is just so fun. 🤷♀️
Thankfully nowadays we can make pretty green lights in much safer ways lol
😂
No radium licking for you young lady!❤️
@Karen Cahill but what if it tastes like a Caramel green apple sucker?? I won't know unless I try...
@@bullfrognit3903 yeah, finishing a thought is a struggle. Or walking through a store, especially like a craft store or Target🤣🤷♀️ I feel bad for my partner, but he knows if I ever go missing, he just needs to find a shiny object and I'll be there🤣🤣🤷♀️
Thank you for sharing their stories! I honestly think that this would make a great movie. It’s a harrowing ordeal and it really highlights the issues our country has had and STILL HAS with the greed of capitalism and the normalization of sexism.
Hi Loey!
I knew of this case from researching it a few years back. I saw a trailer for the movie "Radium Girls" which is based on this case, and decided to look into the details surrounding it. I had almost forgotten about the jaw incident you mentioned in this video, and honestly, I had tears in my eyes hearing what those poor women went through. Absolutely disgusting and heartbreaking, but glad you made this video regardless as people should know about it. Grace's photo at the end was quite hard to look at as well. :(
I remember this story.. Thank you for sharing this with all of your followers..such an injustice to all these women. They fought like hell and saved so many lives..
That 1 time long ago when we got “Hi helloey my name is Loey” ❤❤❤❤ Love the hair, your makeup & hair always look so put together🥰🥰
This is such a coincidence considering I was just thinking of this cuz we just learned about the radium girls in school cuz we are going over the periodic table, and we also live in the same state as the story.
we’re learning about toxicology i’m my forensics class. we went over this case in class and i’ve been completely obsessed
Earliest I’ve ever been, four minutes after it was posted! Just in time too, I was bored AF
I hear stories like this and I always wonder what will be the stuff our future generations think was insane that we did. Probably the sedentary lifestyle/jobs
Pharmaceuticals
i was in Radium Girls the play my freshman year of hs and it was so emotional and interesting. by far my favorite show but it was so sad to learn about this
So excited for this story! I love the jade necklace. Love you Loey and congrats on ten years!
Makes me wonder how many of these watches may still exist out there
I’ve just woke up & Loey uploaded , what a treat 💖💖💖
I haven’t heard of this case before , very interesting & horrifying!
You should check out Bailey Sarians video about the Radium Girls too if you liked this 🥰
I was part of the radium girls play my high-school put on a few years back. The story is so tragic.
A (unfun) fun fact becuse of the half-life of radium the radium girls bodies will be highly radioactive for the next 1000 or so years
for those wondering this case was turned into a play too. it is about Grace Fryer and Kathryn Schaub (two dial painters you talked about) and is heavily based on the events you talked about and their lives. my high school just did this play and i was Kathryn Schaub in it. if any where near you is doing this play please go see it, it is incredibly good.
Bailey Sarian did a video on this!Super scary/toxic conditions back then!
Thank for the vid Loey!! I was missing these types of stories :D.
Oh my gosh… that is beyond awful. Rip to those ladies. 😢💔💔
I did not know OSHA was created because of the radium girls. The fact that women are behind that makes me proud, but also sad because of what they had to go through.
your hair looks so good!!! the color and cut are both so cute, it’s just perfect
Before you brought it up I was going to say, Marie Curie would have disagreed with those factory owners.
This was very interesting and sad of course, Thankyou for posting such an informative video on such an important topic Loey 😊xx
Grate coverage...very interesting. Love ya Loey
Those girls were serious awesome for fighting against this.
This reminded me of the Conasupo incident from 1986, in which Mexican children were being given radioactive milk. It actually heart breaking.
Just think of all the horrible things we're given today that the US government deems "ok". Like all the chemicals in our food, clothes, hair products, etc. It's all poisonous. 😂 I just find it funny when people are like "it's 2023, we know better, our government would never". 😂
It feels like your reading my mind- I’ve been obsessing over every aspect of this for weeks, and as soon as I saw you made a video on it I was shocked too say the least- thank you for telling these girls stories
I just love waking up to loey having uploaded
this is awful, thank you for sharing their story. im a radiologist technician, i've learned the story of Marie Curie's radium, how it impacted people's health in Hiroshima thanks to usa's government later at the time. everything's awful, an element discovered to save lives, used at the same time to destroy them.
your hair literally looks so good!!
you posted this on my lunch break omg thank you loey for helping me not be bored at work 😅😅 edit : i realized this was posted yesterday but hey, i still get to watch it on break!
Wow I have never heard this story
I have been looking for your account on UA-cam for so long 😂 I remember that I used to watch your scary TikTok’s. This story was so good and thank you for talking about the girls . It’s so sad that they couldn’t even celebrate their victory . 🎉
I've heard this story first in a thousand ways to die; also, years later found that someone made sort of a tribute doll, forgot her name but I'm sure if you searched "radium girl doll" you may find it THAT way
I can’t even imagine my entire jaw falling off- 😭😭
Loved the video! You should do more like this ❤
So excited for this! Love the radium girls
absolutely fascinating and by the way you slayed with todays look
Loved this video, those women should never be forgotten.
Omg I finally found you again! I watched you then hadn't seen you then honestly forgot. Then something reminded me you and I wondered what ever happened to that girl that made creepy videos and I could NOT remember your name and you FINALLY showed back up!!!! So excited!!!
very well researched. loved the video!
i learn so much from just watching your videos
Yay love this ready for another live stream ❤
I absolutely loved this video. It was very very interesting. 💖💖
Loey uploaded so i know today is gonna be good ! 🥳🥳🥳🥳
i found you by chance on my youtube homepage and I've been watching all your videos since!
The radium girls are so interesting to me I feel so bad for them I end up thinking about them whenever I paint because I do that with my brushes ik it sounds weird but I'm sure other artists do the same
I'm in LOVE with your hair!!!! I did something similar by getting foil blonde highlights and then getting a toner with pink coloring in it so it's semi permanent like any hair dye you need to keep up with it but !y hair came out looking like a pinkish pearl color in the sun!!!! I'm doing it again soon bc I loved it
Oh man, I can’t imagine the pain Amelia went through.
You need to start doing these true crime stories more I love it ❤
I literally love you so much!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🥰
Does anyone know where loeys gorgeous necklace is from it reminds me of a urn necklace and I want a stone one to protect my dads ashes and my brothers so I need 2 so gorgeous
i loved this video, thanks Loey!
I love your videos!!!!!❤❤
LOVE YOU LOEY ❤️❤️❤️
I love necklace it looks like a jade perfume bottle
Love your Amazonite perfume bottle necklace.
live, laugh, love loey lane
This hair fits you so well I had to do a double take and check what hair you even had before. Because it FEELS like YOUR hairstyle and haircolor. Like you've had it forever lmao.
How have I never heard of this before?! (Also, I've never been this early to an upload and I feel very lucky!)
At one point Loey says that the companies reaction to the negative findings was not what you might expect, but honestly it's exactly what i expect. Big corporations are largely evil and rapacious and always have been... this is why i find it hard to even trust certain scientic studies bc they're backed or funded by people who have a vested interest in the outcome.
I love your hair!!! It looks so good on you, so beautiful 😍!!!.....love this story and hope to see many more from you!!
IM SO EARLY I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SO MUCH LIKE I CANT ❤❤
Hi Loey! ❤️
Watching from New Zealand. 😊
Your hair is adorable it really suits you 🥰
Off topic I LOVE your hair!!❤️🔥😍
Evening beautiful!! Thanks for the top notch entertainment ♥ ♥
Its baffles me the things we learn in history class in school vs. Rhe things we really should know. This is a story we should be telling and yet so many have no clue 😢. Honestly this could be so many of our own great/grand parents (depending on your age)
You're hair is amazing!
I absolutely love your hair bestie ❤
Need the deetz on that necklace lolol is it a vial??? In love w/ it🥺😭😭
Your hair is very beautiful!

I read a book about this! It’s haunting!
Been Subscribed for a few years now, you look amazing"
The book about this is amazing and is written from the painters point of view. Highly recommend reading it!
Lovin it 🥰
Hi love the haircut 💙💗💙
