You are a clever, clever fellow. I appreciate that you used a curved piece of fabric unlike other tutorials that use a nice even straight edge. You are demonstrating the technique in the real world. Your video is clear and detailed. Thanks so much for posting this!

Aha! Now I know why I was getting only partial hems from this foot. I was never feeding the proper width of fabric into the foot opening. Superbly helpful video. Thanks!

Your demonstration of how the fabric should pass thru the foot is very good, little hints many do not explain. Practice is most important along with patience.

It's amazing how those initial 4-5 stitches aren't truly needed!!! Thank you for making this video, you're technique has been exactly what I needed to hone this skill :-)

Great instruction. I'm learning to sew on a circa 1961 Singer Rocketeer Model 500A. I have the attachments that came w/ it originally including one or two for hemming. I was searching for videos on how to hem shirts when I ran across your tutorial on using the hemming foot. Perfect timing! I know it'll take practice but I want my shirt hems to look like this so I'm gonna give it a go. Thank you, Brian, for this instructional video!

Brian, you are an excellent teacher. You do a great job explaining as you go - thanks for all the helpful hints about keeping the fabric exactly between the two points, the stiletto (I have one and didn't know what it was even for! I look forward to watching all of your videos!

This is like the greatest video on the hemming foot. I like that you took your time and let me see how you "finagled" the material because I've just got my first foot (been doing it by pressing all these years) and been practicing all day. I wish I'd seen this first. I'm sure I can do it now. I didn't have trouble getting mine started (I pressed 3 inches so it would not fight me) but I did have a LOT of trouble on the curves. THIS is so helpful! Thanks!

    Hi Brian!
That is a fantastic use for the stiletto tool, apparently, this is what our grandmothers & great grandmothers used the stiletto tool for as well, which is why the old sewing machines came with the oak dovetail puzzle boxes of presser feet which included not only 2 screwdrivers, but the stiletto too, as well. Some stilettos have a point like yours, others have a serrated flathead screwdriver tip, for even more traction pushing pulling thread into whatever presser foot you useThank you!

Good show Brian. Your viewers likely did the same thing I did in that I have viewed a dozen rolled hem videos. Most presenters go through the process in a matter of seconds and they all come out perfectly. If people think you over complicated the process, you did not, it's something that will take practice to get the hem done as quickly as in those ten second videos. The most important tip is to keep the fabric touching both sides of the foot as indicated, that is the ONLY way to get it right.

    Hi Brian
Had to pass on my thx & let u know I have just conquered my narrow hem foot. 6m in fact - woohoo! It's a great feeling. I had checked out about 3 other videos, but yours was the one that nailed it for me.
I actually place my L index finger under the fold of the fabric and lift the fabric so it is angled upwards with my R hand.
Now I need to work out how to use my differential feed overlocker to gather my newly narrow hemmed strip. And then I will be making some nighties.

Wow. Always wondered how to use that little sucker. I have been sewing since I was 16, so thats like forever. I do alterations, lots of pagents, proms and weddings. I have always been afraid of THAT foot, and tossed in in the back. Well, you have shown me that if I don't get in a hurry, I could do a rolled hem. I will do a lot of practice runs on some cut offs before I try it on on of those really expensive dresses. Wish me luck. Hmmm. there is a blind hem foot........

@sam29232 Hey Sam, it depends on what shank style you have on your kenmore. Kenmore machines could have a high, super high, or low shank. I'd suggest getting a snap on shank adapter so you can use readily available snap on feet. There's a set on ebay that includes a hemming foot for less than $20.

hi, i'm wondering if you are hemming something how much you leave when you trim away. is it twice the size of the hem? on some materials it's REALLY hard to trim leaving 1/4 inch! and can you do this with a pressed hem? Like when I'm shortening something I generally press first on the new hemline. then i have the new hem exactly where I want it.

    Hi,
How was the rippling/roping effect which is considered a sewing defect created on bottom hems of jeans? Knowledge of how this can be produced would be very useful in giving the bottom hems of jeans a more authentic look without having to going to great lengths in finding a union special chain stitching sewing machine.. What should should we tell the tailor to achieve this look of the hem? I'm looking forward hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

If you would have raised the foot to release the hold of the fabric on the curve, it would have been easier to feed the fabric around your curve. And YES go slow, if you want it to be perfect, go slow.
