@LC Not just Korea, but a lot of countries don't have that concept, including mine (I live in a Balkan country, southeastern of Europe). Here, you either are in a relationship and do intimate stuff, or don't. One night stands are not really popular though they do happen rarely. Friends with benefits is nonexistent. In fact, even being friends with the opposite gender is taugh lol, as girls stick to being friends with girls only, and guys to guys. Having a male best friend is rare, being overly affectionate with them (hugging, kissing cheeks or more) even rarer. The most they'll get is a handshake. 😂

I have a male friend, a really good one. He’s been a part of my life since highschool and i wouldn’t trade him for anything. I’ve barely had any skinship with him like it’s too gross even to imagine it.

I think upbringing has a big part in how people interact with each other. In some families holding hands, hugging and even kissing on the cheek are not a big deal 🤷🏻 so they would have no problem interacting that way with friends that are both male and female. However in some families touching of any kind is frowned upon. As I said I think family values and interactions are all different. Depending on where you are from and what the common belief in your culture is.

@Solaris Same. 😂 My family was really strict and religious, so I was never comfortable with any of them. Never even got a hug from my own mother, nvm someone else, or someone of the same sex. But I'm highly affectious with my friends. I'll hug, kiss them (on cheeks), hit their behinds for fun, and just be like a snuggling cat. No intimate feeling involved, just plain friendship though probably too much seeing as everyone around me questions my sexuality. 😂
That's super true, the way you behave with your family is the way you then behave with close friends (cause they kind of feel like family). I have a girl friend who has never had problems changing in front of her other girl friends because in her family they were used to seeing each other naked. This has shocked me when she told me, but I guess someone's more comfortable with his own body so...

This just shows the cultural differences between our countries. Sitting a friend on my lap or sitting on a friend's lap, holding hands, kisses on the cheek and all that, even small kisses with my best friend, those are all things that are common in my environment. It's weird seeing how uncomfortable they seem with just petting their heads.

There are 2 type of friendship,
1 friend =so called passive common person that you know not too long interact not to often keep secrets etc
2 best friend really =which you know from a to z will take bullet for him /her no matter what.
So as far I seen every M-F friendship 2is always someone in love or both but hides it .and if one gets in relationship with someone else they will never be happy as they were ,and most cases friendship will die and person who is in relationship will eventually miss best friend when its too late when too old or have kids etc ,basically they both filled unnecessary gap in life .
As my grandparents told they seen heard soo many of these story's even from their parents, it never ends well .
So my grandfather asked me if I ever have best friend girl for many years and see each other often ,fight etc why she would not be my gf or wife ,cause its basically same as relationship but already builded unbreakable trust ? I was young said ewww ofc .And he said if you have wife she must be your only one best friend and only ,no other woman whatsoever , that is what true love means he said.
So all this he is my best friend bs nowadays doesn't make sense especially western country's ,knows person 2 months =he/she is bestie .

Is interesting how in other countries kisses and hugs are part of everyday greetings, even with strangers, so a certain degree of physical contact is not always seen as romantic, so you could easily translate that to friendships, in contrast to other placees were the same actions are considered only to be done with a romantic partner. The funny thing I've seen sometimes is that friendships of the same sex in Korea can give each other pecks and hold hands and no one finds that strange, while there's still LGBTQ+ people out there, but heteronormativity is so engraved in the culture that potential friends to lovers relationships are forced upon just on male-female relationships, when there's lots of female-male friendships out there that I can assure you feel no romantic connection with each other whatsoever hahaha But I guess for the community that's kind of a WIN if you think about it haha

It's funny because my Best friend is female and our school thought we had something, but we saw no romantic relationship between ourselves. I have a ton of female friends that I wouldn't date, just the same as I got tons of male friends that I wouldn't date either.
This thought that you can't have friends from the opposite sex says a lot about how they view the world. This view pretty much leaves out sexuality in the question itself, we all know gay people exist, as well as asexuals. This question has one answer only, YEA.
Now if we wanted to talk about if two people whose sexuality would allow a relationship can be friends, again still YES. I'm not out here trying to swoon on all my friends. People who say no to this question I would trust less in an actual relationship. If you think that opposite sex can't just talk and be chill together w/ out trying to have sex with each other, how could I trust you with other people, like.. EVER?! XD. To you, having a simple conversation with someone is the same as trying to get w/ them.

I've a close friend that I've slept on the same bed with many times, gives kisses to on forehead and cheek, she sits on my lap all the time etc because i love her a lot and we know that our relationship is 100% friendship but i also have many close friends that i wouldn't do any of that with because feelings could develop with those people. so yeah it really just depends on if its the right kind of friendship to do these kinda things with.

I see other men with this mindset all the time. I think friendship can exist between males and females to varying levels. I've had girls I've considered friends like me, and girls I liked considered me friends... And then I had girls who I thought were friends and thought the same of me. Of course it won't work with every1, and sometimes you will have to understand that friendship is the best way to keep a certain person in your life. Being able to acknowledge the differences between general attraction in physicality and emotionally between being sexual, or just an acknowledgement of them, is truly what helps you understand things. That said, I've had friends that were girls and boys that I was attracted to both emotionally and physically, but that doesn't mean I thought sexually of them. I just acknowledge that they are good looking. But, this also leads to the idea that friendship could turn into something more. It most definitely can in almost all cases, as long as you are attracted to their specific sex/gender.
I think its kind of refreshing to see such a contrast. Part of the reason is that some people have had traumas in their lives to the point that they won't let anyone touch them, like myself. The slower pace is something appealing to me.

In some countries you kiss on the mouth to say hello or on each cheek. I kinda grew up in Spain, we tended to travel a lot, and learned that custom as a little kid. When I moved back to America during preschool it was a huge culture shock but I learned to substitute the kisses with physical contact. It got me in trouble a few times and accidentally caused a few couples to break up. So I stopped most physical contact with guys I do still do a lot of physical contact with my friends especially my best friends. Like I will hold almost anyone's hand if we're walking together. Of course if someone tells me they don't like physical contact I will respect that, I do have to remind myself tho. But it's got me into a situation where almost everyone things I'm dating one of my best friends. Even though she's in a relationship with a dude. He understands tho but I think that he's jealous because she's not comfortable enough to have physical contact with him. I've known her for 5 years now and they started dating earlier this year.
