You gotta respect him for at least showing up to work. Rendon and the rest of these overpaid clowns all sit out and don't care, he hasn't missed a start in years despite getting torched every time out. It really is crazy.
This is true. Guys like Strasburg too. At his peak he could go toe to toe with the best of them. But could never stay healthy, even though he tried and tried and tried. But yeah. Corbin, while he’s atrocious, it’s not for a lack of trying.
I the biggest reason that Nationals fans don't want to kill him, or Stephen Strasburg, is because they DID win them a world series. Despite the horrible stats, and negative WAR, Nats fans still got what they paid for.
When you're a pitcher that HAS to locate low in the strike zone to be effective, and you lose that, the wheels don't just come off. They fly off and leave the ballpark!! That's Corbin.
there are many players at a professional level that are riding the razor's edge of being an effective player. any little bit of fall off mentally or physically and they can spiral downward like crazy (see: Javier Baez, as much as I am loathe to admit it as a Cubs fan)
The main issue for Corbin was the fact that he only used his slider through out his career but once hitters figured out how to hit it he chose to rely on another pitch instead of getting in the batters mindset he just went back and forth with his main pitch and other pitches
couple that with him releasing the pitch way late compared to what he used to and he essentially ruined himself in every way possible. it gets less break and hitters know to sit on it
I always believed his 2020 was bad because of the short season, in spite of his numbers. However, his first starts in 2021 were pretty solid. His 3rd start was his 1st start after the league began checking pitchers for foreign substances. He gave up 11 runs to Arizona in less than 2 Innings, and has been bad ever since. I believe the foreign substance checks are what caused his career to continually spiral, but despite this, I’ll always appreciate him for what he did in Game 7. Not the best overall contract, but still worth it because of that.
There's something to be said about his durability as well. All these years of getting shelled, yet I don't recall him ever missing a whole lot of time due to injuries, nor did he make any excuses for his bad outings. He's been able to take the ball every 5th day and eat innings for us, which is actually somewhat valuable for a rebuilding club. He's also been trying new things, such as adding a cutter to the arsenal. So it's clear that he's putting the effort in to try and improve. It's just... not working. Obviously I'd rather him NOT get torched every outing. But at least he tries. And he goes out every 5th day without complaining or showing his ass on the field. This, plus his efforts in 2019 make it hard for me to hate Corbin, despite how bad his contract might seem on paper.
@codenamelarry6518 Righter than you realized: in 2022 I went to an event where Phil Wood straight-up said that, once MLB started checking for the sticky stuff, his killer slider stopped sliding.

I fully understand why the Nats signed the Strasburg contract, but this one was questionable from the start and now they are paying big time. But at least they didn't bite on Rendon, where the Angels played Sucker. He IS the worst pitcher in baseball, but he may lose that crown. The Mariners just signed Broken Down Old Horse How the Heck Is He Still an MLB Candidate Dallas Keuchel to a contract.
No way. Corbin making all his starts the last so many yrs is insult to injury If u ask me. This guys such a scrub....and who knows who gets a shot in his rotation spot if he was hurt or benched during the last 4 yrs or so. Whoever got his rotation spot couldn't be any worse...but very well.... could've been better .
The worst pitcher in the MLB is Joe Kelly. Since the WBC, he is a war criminal but he still committing his crimes. His last one in date? The first Yamamoto's win with the Dodgers
Iwanna ask nationals fans..obviously you want them to perform well but would you rather have no corbin for that run? And save the money so yall could compete the last couple years?
If we were gonna commit that kind of money to anyone it should have been trea turner and Juan Soto , but this is a bad faith argument to me because I don’t think the money spent on Corbin and Strasberg is why we let scherzer / Harper / rendon etc. go
I swear, as I was typing "The worst pitcher in the MLB," I had a feeling that it would be a Washington National. I have been a Nationals fans since their move to DC. I know this team way too well apparently lol.

Yes they did but I really do wish they both worked out better I am still huge fans of both of em
I think that people will look back positively on his time in washington, he did really help them win that world series
Game 7 winner
As soon as i looked at the title i knew this was about Patrick Corbin
As soon as I looked at the thumbnail I knew this was about Patrick Corbin

From what this Nationals fan has heard, once MLB started checking pitchers for the sticky stuff, his slider stopped sliding.
Remember Jordan Zimmerman? Talk about a bad contract.
Volume is fine lol. However, awful contract but I think Nats fans should be fine with it, he was instrumental in that WS win

at least he was eating the inning .................while the son of washington is lying on the bench waiting for recovery since the 2019 finals mvp
He retired m8 lol
The weird thing is how his slider regressed. It was the best breaking ball in 2019 and now it’s one of the worst
Have heard from reliable sources that it stopped sliding when MLB started policing the sticky stuff.

Did the thumbnail give it away?
Patrick Corbin going downhill so fast is so confusing
Rumor I heard from a legit insider is that, ever since MLB started cracking down on pitchers using sticky stuff, his slider doesn't slide.

These pitcher's are getting bigger and faster. I wonder if they will move the mound back. Has not been done since 1893.
Well they did lower it more recently so I don’t think it’s completely unprecedented to make changes
@purebeast6812 I think they lowered it after Bob Gibson's heroic season back in the 1960's.
theyre experimenting with it in some minor leagues, what they do when testing new rules
