When I journal I just start with whatever is on my mind, no matter how trivial, and it usually ends with a pretty meaningful journal entry. Be honest, and don't be afraid to write down certain things. Just write and you'll fall in love with it... Journaljoy, thank you for this video and for your channel.
Ive been journalling pretty much my whole life, the biggest thing for me is having a book where i dont care about the presentation that i can dump my entire life into. As an artist im a major perfectionist so it helps so much being able to just have a place where presentation doesnt matter. I dump everything from stream of thought to my emotions to daily recounts in it, i also REALLY love using it as a scrapbook where i can stick in photos, train tickets and other physical memories alongside my entires. When i have panic attacks i like making vent pages where i just go absolutely ham on the page with drawings and scribbles and random notes + sticking in photos of places that make me happy so i can remind myself i wont always feel that way :> the main thing for me is just using it as a book i can put my whole life into
To add to pen selection: the size/shape/weight etc. of a pen is also important. If you're going to be writing for long periods, ballpoint pens and pens with a slim barrel tend to make your hand cramp. You have to make sure the pen feels comfortable in your hand.. some like heavy pens, some like them lighter etc. And also certain pens pair better with certain paper. Just because you have a pen you like doesn't mean it will be suitable for the journal you choose, so it's important to experiment.
Good suggestions! Besides my daily journal and my 3-year journal which I write in every night, I have two reading journals: one for short form articles that I'll finish in one sitting and write about typically in that same sitting, and one for longer form reading which might require many days for me to complete during which time I might have read and written about some short form articles in my other journal.
I bullet journal in manuscript and when I actually have a journal, emotional entry I use cursive on the same page and write. It looks so different so it doesn’t take away from my lists visually. I really try to stay in one journal at a time and fill it up with everything in my life, including art, scraps and stickers collections. I fill a journal about every 3-4 months. I fell so accomplished when I fill one up. My mind thanks me too.
I also prefer smooth paper to rough paper. And I need the notebook to be large, B5 or A4. I find that it makes it easier for thoughts to flow, because I have so much space. With smaller pages I feel restricted.
I have journaled off and on for years. When I had baby twns my Mom said I should journal, I tried, but I couldn’t keep up. When you say you don’t journal every day it made me feel better. I journaled every day for a year when covid started, really fascinating to go back and read it now. I knew I was tracking history from a first hand perspective. Ilike pens like you use and I use those composition books. A couple years ago I bought a smaller graphed journal books, plus the markers suggested…I haven’t had the courage to do anything in those books. I use the markers for my work calendar. I use Outlook and One note, but I can’t break the habit of wanting to write things down too. With the computer I have to click through, but with notes I glance quickly at a page, my brain likes that I guess, thank you for the videos. I’m working my way through past videos.
I am very late to this video, but I am just throwing my two cents in here. When I started to journal, I thought I would keep memories of my life, that I could show to my own children or grandchildren later. Now that I am 37, I realize that I will never have children. But the habit of memory keeping is still there. I want to leave behind a proof of who I was at a certain time. Be it for myself or for others long after I am gone. It is of course also a creative outlet for me, since I really enjoy decorating my pages. But I begin to struggle with the amnount of filled journals I have now (around 80, writing notebooks not included), and I really do not know what to do with them in the future, or how many I will own ten years down the road...
I use composition books. They're inexpensive therefore, in my budget. The composition books made in Vietnam have the best paper. I purchase mine at Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and walmart. Walmart recently came out with a dot grid. If I'm wanting to write with a gel pen or felt tip pen, I washi tape (you could use a glue stick too) 2-3 pages together to avoid bleed through or ghosting. I also like the composition notebooks because most of them are sewn, not glued, and hold up better.
Yes I’ve tried Leuchtturm’s pocket journal. I even did a comparison video with Moleskine. I still like the dimensions of the Moleskine better, the Leuchtturm is a bit taller. But the quality of the Leuchtturm is better. If you go for Moleskine I would get a hardcover as the softcover fall apart pretty quickly. If you want to use anything else but a ballpoint pen to write with you’re better off with the Leuchtturm.

Thank you for sharing!! Yes I hear ya, eventually I will have to downsize my collection because of storage issues... lol
Great suggestions! Do you have any suggestions for spiral notebooks or journals on Amazon? Thanks!
I don’t really use spiral notebooks... sorry

Hello, where can I get a Midori A5 planer notebook thanks
Howdy! Thanks for the video! Have you tried Leuchtturm's A6 pocket journal? If so, do you still prefer Moleskine's?
