Mate your a legend, I had 2 mechanics look at my Captiva and couldn't fix it , I watched your video and went and had a look and sure enough it was the problem
Nice walkthrough vid. We had this issue about 6 months ago on a customers captiva. First time any of us had seen it and we were puzzled at first as to why the nut had come loose. Fairly simple fix but man are the starters a pain to get to. Am glad we don't see many captivas
Thanks gekkokeats, Crazy how 1 model can have so many failures on all different components, engine, transfer case, electrics ..... they are a costly vehicle to keep on the road 😒
Well done mate! These Captivas suffered from this problem so much that GM provided a TSB with the updated starter and cable & instructions. Another reason they get nicknamed 'Craptivas'! 🚗😁😠😒 As usual, good video and explanation.
Thank you Max, It is hard to believe how many common problems these can have. What does the TSB say mate? Does it state the primary failure reason? Curious for owners that the fault has not showed up yet, how they can avoid this happening without having to do the upgraded repair.
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage Hey Gerard, I think the main reason for the fault it the poor positioning of the +ve battery cable, which is allowed to rub on the chassis. Here's a link if you are interested australiancar.reviews/_pdfs/Holden-Captiva-ServiceBulletin-14003A.pdf I believe that is also covered by Holden's extended warranty.
As mentioned in the video I have included links in the description for the relay bypass video & also the transfer case step by step removal All the info is there should you have this problem in your vehicle, thanks for watching.
Thanks for this valuable video. My situation is a new starter motor fitted, and was working well, but had other issues with throttle body, EGR, and fuel rail pressure. On removing the EGR and cooler and replacing the elbow pipe to the throttle body, I'm now getting no cranking at all. It's giving the same symptom you're describing. The main cables are in good condition and connections are secure. I'd love to get your view on what could be happening now. THANKS!
I've got it cranking again and it fires up if I have the accelerator pedal all the way down, but runs extremely rough and dies after about 5-10 seconds.
We have old skool cars in the shed so good for trouble free and diagnosis the repairs and brain dead easy, and still 10kms to the litre, and better with hho 14 to 16 if deisel ,unlike our later cars ,computer controlled everything inside and outside. New cars are very interesting to work on though just not if you're in the middle of nowhere in near 50 degree heat.
I like it, well explained, its a good video! I wish I could have an advice on how I could get the communication of tcm, ecm and ebcm back to normal and then finally be able to get the car to be able to crank and start!! This problem was after a an electric short that was caused from wrong wiring connection after they were splitted from the brake pedal switch on the same vehicle Chevy Captiva!! Thanks!!
Should this not be a vehicle recall if it is common fault it looks like a fairly serious problem in terms of fire risk. Great video won't be buying one of those cars anytime soon!
Cheers Michael, as far as I am aware the customer first contacted the dealer after the diagnostic to check for warranty before I got the green light to repair. I do not have the dealership recall info so I am not sure on that mate, it should be regardless. It could be avoided easily.
that’s seems to be exactly the problem what I have too, Captiva 2012. It’was not logically why it worked or didn’t work sometimes. In my case when it didn't start, had I to turn off the light and it stared by next try often. Sometimes you could try 30 times and it didn’t works. Note, when I turned the key after the check modes was done and all lights in the cockpit went off. It looked then like a short and even the display from navigator or radio went away(power off). ’
Hey there I had to replace the crank angle sensor on a captive 2.2L diesel 2014 model, pulled the transfer case and so on and put it all back together and now it’s lost all dash lights and all you can hear is a clicking noise, the funny thing is it was turning on and turned over but no start, so what do you think it may be.
I have a 2007 2.0diesel manual Captiva and my battery is good but the car is not starting...only rolling turning the engine but not starting...what could be the problem?
See if you can solve this problem.. holden captiva cg series 2 2011.. car starts, but will not turn off after removing the key.. changed the starter relay and fuse.. replaced the run/ crnk both.. in the ignition there is 2 connections coming off it only.. pull both .. but the car still doesn't stop running.. so what is the problem? 😅
Don't u have to be careful when your doing relay bypass tho because am guessing that not all vehicles uses the same pins. Love video relly helps me with my level 3 Course in diagnostic
Thanks for the kind words Keaton, I appreciate the kind words 🙏🙏 As a practice it is a great way to double check everything and assume you are wrong until you get confirmation. If you have the same relay type as this, as in the same numbers then it will be the same. Toyotas use 3&5 pins and you may be able to view a breakdown of the pin layout printed onto some types of relays. Great to hear from people going through courses 😁 Keep up the good work 👌👍
A Monday car should only be assembled on a Tuesday, see problem solved. Its an ill wind that doesn't profit someone, including mechanics. Thinking about it again, maybe Thursday.

Definitely can’t fix it at home without all that fancy lift and equipment
The lights don't even come on but we literally have a new battery.
