Honda CX500 Cafe Racer Build 8 - painting the engine matt black
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 жов 2024
- Part 8 of the Honda CX500 Cafe Racer Build and after leaving the primer coat to settle over a couple of days it's ready for a matt black coat. I also add a few little decals back as at this stage I myself am finding it hard to visualise the finished product when it's all matt black.

Have your say: Matt or Satin?
matte is SO HARD to keep looking good. it gets crudded up WAY too fast. Love the vids, mate. I'll be doing a build series of my own in the coming winter. Thanks for sharing the process you are getting a lot of us to finally tackle those projects we have laying about! Excellent inspiration and tips.
Thank you. and all the best with your own project this winter. Still undecided about the paint.
Ah taste is such a personal thing, but I use PJ1 fast black (gloss) superb and long lasting finish. Done a couple of engines this way (but I really like glossy...)
Have to say I respect your vids so much I don't skip the ads. Doing my 1980 along with your series. Thanks
Thanks for the support on the ads too 🤘🤘🤘
I think it's awesome how people from around the world can come together on like interests with something so simple as a webpage.
In any case, I appreciate all the work you put into making these videos.
I have a scrambler and enjoy that style a lot. If you get the urge of mixing styles, check out the Avon AV54 tires. They're a thing of beauty.
All black is perfect!
I think I'll have to see it in the bike :)
after watching several of these builds, I'm shocked at the lack of comments regarding the music selection. some gooooood tunes thrown in there, especially the one during the painting in this video
Always a mixed reaction when it comes to music choice for my videos
awesome videos..I have a 1979 CX500 custom that I am a working on..can't wait to see more of the build..all the way from Ontario Canada...
Thank you, and good luck with your CX build
Can't wait to see that engine in the red frame! Keep up the good work!
Thank you, neither can I
Satin definitely, that paint you used is ok on exhaust system, it needs very high temp to cure properly, engine won't get hot enough, and use a Mask when painting, Wally!
Will look so good if you decide to either polish or paint the fins. Matte is gonna be a nightmare to keep clean, especially on our roads ahaha
Definitely, we'll see how it goes.
I think I know the look you are going for with your build.
However, in my opinion, the rocker covers should at the very least, have the detail ribs polished bright.
This would tie in the bright work on the badging and other bright work bits.
Just my opinion,
good luck on your build.
Very interested in seeing the finished product at the end !
Yeah one of the things I'm thinking of doing. Half thinking of going for the GL rocker covers as I like them more.
For The Bold - dreegez
I agree !
Have done the same thing here.
I think it gives a more distinct look, setting it apart from the heard.
Do you mean the 650/500TC rocker covers?
Or these oddballs: cx500forum.com/forum/selling-buying-forum/25934-other-valve-cover-options-3.html
Yeah those are the same, same ones as used on the Eurosport too, a lot of versions used them.
I hope you have luck finding them! It took me a lot of stalking on eBay to score a pair. You'll need the appropriate bolts (90016-MC7-000), while the gaskets remain the same.
I'm so happy I found this channel. Fantastic content and quality. Really dig it. Hope to start my own cafe racer build soon. Gonna be a '02 Suzuki GSX 750 AE
Thank you. Happy to have you subscribed. Good luck with your GSX for when you start.
i love the matt black. it'll really help bring out the red once you add it and put it all together. im doing my kawasaki black and red. i used satin black on the frame and it competes with the satin red for attention. im going to re-do the paint and go matt as well.
A lot of hate for the matt on here. I'll see how it holds up. Easy enough to change but not much of the engine is shown when it's in the frame.
Love your videos. Their so much more interesting to watch than some other. Keep up the amazing work.
Also what welder do you use?
Thank you. Means a lot to hear that.
I use a Sealey MIG welder
I think there is too much black in one area. It needs balancing. What about removing the paint from the rocker covers and oil filter cover? You could leave them as metal or powder coat them in the red you have planned for the frame.
It's what I'm feeling also. I'm going to powdercoat items like the clamp that goes onto the frame and the metal water pipe that travels around the engine. The bolts will also be changed. What I'm thinking is re-building it, then make that call about the rocker covers after that's done.
Might be worth doing a vid on best way into doing your first build? I'm shure there's many folk who'd be interested.
Not a bad idea.
Its coming together quickly im excited man!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, yeah it is, quicker than I thought it would.
Hey man I like the videos. keep it up. You're channel is one of the ones that inspired me to build a bike!
Thank you, amazing to hear that these video inspired you.
Hoping to start my own build this summer once I've finished building my workshop; like what you've done with yours, stealing some ideas! How/who are you insuring your bikes with, and does it cost a small fortune for a custom bike here in the U.K.?
To be honest shop around, you'll get the price down, but different places give different rates for age etc. These 2 are still off the road for the time being so I haven't looked into insuring these yet.
So I've become interested in building a bobber style bike but with the overall look being much 'thinner' and elegant. Is this an achievable first build? I've had welding lessons at school and can operate milling machines, central lathes etc. as well as having a decent basic understanding of motorbikes. Any advice is greatly appreciated
Great video as always 👍
I guess it all depends what bike and engine you go for. Bobbers for me are fat bikes, so if you find that balance it might work.
Looking good! Im planning on using VHT wrinkle finish black paint on my engine.
Thanks, I was thinking about that paint also, looks nice when done.
Love your videos, man. Shoutout from Kuwait
Thank you, and thanks for watching.
Great stuff mate -- you are a natural communicator! Now for the million pound question - What's a good way into building without getting in over your head immediately? I spanner a bit on my lads dirt bikes but don't have the skills (yet) for a ground up build. Seems to be maybe 3 routes? A) get a donor bike & a bolt on type kit (such as CRK or RYCA type thing) B) get a sensible donor bike and just go for it - fail a bit & learn or c) try to get some experience on someone else's build? Your thoughts would be welcome. Ps I see you are into recording ( I clocked the focus rite!) good stuff. Check out 'produce like a pro' her on you tube- good free advice. Greetings from WAles
Thank you. I guess if you can unscrew and put a bolt back on that's all the skill you need to start. If you go for something like a Honda CB or Suzuki GS you have little frame modification there. Just knowing where to put everything back together. I'd say go for it.
Looking slick mate! I've got a CX in my garage that I gave up on... been sat for 3 years so I'm gonna jump back on it! Are you gonna reuse the old wiring harness or fit something modern like Motogadget M-Unit?!
I'm going to use the old wiring harness but I'll look into an Motogadget fuse board. Go for it, bring that CX back to life.
Awesome... feel free to make your electrics video as detailed as possible!!! :D
Love your builds! Just started my own with a 1977 Suzuki GS750. Thinking of going from dual to mono shock. I'm curious to know what it would take to implement that. Would you be able to share something in that regard?
If I was to attempt to monoshock a Suzuki I'd probably look at getting a swingarm from a newer monoshock Suzuki as a starting point, then re-build the top part. Unlike the CX500 the Suzuki doesn't have a centre frame pillar to easily clamp a monoshock on, but I'm sure if you're handy with welding it could be done. All the best
For The Bold - dreegez Thanks for your reply! After weighing all the options, decided I prefer the classic look of dual shocks.
My 1983 Honda nighthawk 750 is ready for painting, but the engine is so heavy that I really would not like to take it out of the frame. Is there an easy way to remove the engine or so you recommend for a first time builder to leave it and just work around it and cover it when painting the frame. Then use Degreaser or speed green to clean off the engine, use a low grit sand paper or steel wool to take off old galvanization. Then painting it with correct primer, paint and finisher?
Brill, good stage to have it at. I find that if you're on your own, you can tip the bike on its side (make sure everything you can is stripped off like fuel tank and the oil is emptied) then when it's on the floor on its side, you can release all the bolts and lift the frame off leaving the engine where it is (if that makes sense), then to put it all back together the same process in reverse (but with something soft underneath.
thanks.
Ohhh Nooo, The OVERSPRAY!!!!! Poor little defenseless Suzy.
Hey! Would it be possible to add the links or the place where you bought the parts in the description?
Loving the build!
Yeah of course, this black paint was from Halfords, the primer was Amazon
Brilliant series of videos. On heavy rotation on my phone to guide me through a cx500 build. Can I ask how many coats of black you applied? 3?
Thanks, I put 2 coats.
Looking forward to seeing how this build turns out! --what's that catchy track you used during the painting scene?
Thanks. It's a UA-cam 'royalty free' track, I'll have a look to see what it was called.
Really like your videos, mate! I know I'm a bit late to the party but what is the best way to tackle painting the bottom side of the engine?
Turn it on it’s side and spray the bottom first. Let it dry and carry on the right way up
@@forthebold thank you sir!
What would look good is if you were to paint the oil filter housing in the same red you are painting the frame with.
Not a bad idea
Awesome video as always 👍😊
Thank you :)
What paint did you use for the engine? Looks cool
yes loving it so far.. excited to see it take shape.. which shocks did you go for? ive had a look around the net and a lot of people are saying a simple ebay set will do just fine
To be honest I've just gone with a set of RFY ones. Not Ohlins but work well for me.
For The Bold - dreegez yeah those are the ones i had seen. look good and do the trick. noticed you mentioned them but havent added them to the build cost thingy haha
Greetings! Help me understand, after priming and painting the silver cylinder heads will you keep them painted or strip the paint off? If you are going to expose the silver again is it better to cover them prior to the priming and painting? I'm interested for my "future" build. Thanks. Cheers, Chris
Hi, I'll be keeping them black. I think. you're right. If you're 100% sure you're going to be keeping the covers 'metal' then yeah, you'd take them off.
Your videos are really helpful, thanks!
Could you please let me know how many paint cans of primer and black I will need to do the same job as in your video for my cx500 project?
KR
Thanks, for the primer I'd say 1 can, for the coverage make that 2 cans, just to be sure.
Hey Dreegez! what temp rating does the paint have? I am going to clean and paint mine just want to make sure the paint will hold up. Great Vid!
Thanks, it's up to 550oF
Man I am fucking loving your videos! Thank you.
Thanks, and thanks for watching.
Dreegez, where did you deside to paint the engine satin black? And moreover how did you do it? Or was it black magic? Cheers!
I did end up painting it satin in between episodes.
Aha, thanks! May I ask which type and brand of paint. There are guys warning me not to go with high temp paint as it keeps sticky for ages. Best regards from Holland
Just compression tested my project CX and ended up having to replace a head gasket on my last night >.> at least it wasnt the piston rings.
gutted, but yes, not the worst thing that could happen
i got a nice tip for that shitty mat black result that im familiar with go over it with satin clear coat and you get the effect you were looking for
i was going through your vids to see if you painted your last engine at all. what made you decide to give it a go on this one?
I painted the covers on the GS and the radiator fins on the Maico. For this one I wanted the frame to stand out more which is why I painted this one.
have you had any problems with keeping the engine clean....or chipping?
not too much, obviously not as good as powder coating but it's not too bad.
Once again thanks for the videos. I have two CX500s. One deluxe and one custom. Do you have any ideas what cafe racer gas tanks would work with the Honda CX500? Really dont like the custom gas tank.
What year is this CX? Do all have Cardan? Yours also? Im looking for one too :)
awesome Video:) i am working on my CB 125 and i hope something good will come out:D
Thanks, all the best with your CB, I'm sure it will
good job my friend 👍👍
Thank you.
Why is it that people using their thumb on a spray can sets me off? Arrrrrrrgh!
might use my toe next time ;)
I’ve been using my penis but it stings
good job , can i ask how many botles of the black paint did u need for this paint ?
Thanks. I used 2 cans.
@@forthebold , ah ok thx for reply
any issues doing this process for carbs too to make it match?
You'd probably have to use etch primer with them being aluminium
red heads would go great mate, think about it! :-)
Will do.
Are you on the CX500 forum and have a build thread?
No unfortunately I'm not, but not a bad thought.
May I ask, what song is that playing in the background?
Do you spray the bottom of the engine separately?
Yeah, I do that first, you can also take the oil pan off to paint.
For The Bold - dreegez cheers mate, great channel ! Keep it up 👍
Song?
RIP headphone users. That intro
You had me through the first seven segments... but then you painted the engine whole... UHHG!!!! nothing looks worse than a motor that's been painted with all the bolt heads, gaskets, grommets and so forth all in-place. It would have looked SOOO much better had you just pulled a few parts off the motor before assaulting it with the rattle can.
I REALLY hope you take all the bolts and screws out in the next video and polish the paint off them!!! PLEASE???
+Edward Giovannelli all bolts will be replaced which is why I didn't bother removing them for the respray
Of you’re powder coating or fixing you’re engine you can do it whilst it’s in pieces otherwise go ahead and paint the engine whole. Replace the bolts afterwards. The expense involved in disassembling an engine when all you’re going to be doing it spraying it isn’t justified.
Good stuff, but the music makes me dizzy. Just as well as painting the whole engine does. With the bolts in.
The fumes made me dizzy, don't worry about the bolts, the video after this is swapping out the bolts for new ones
What camera do you use?
I use a GoPro HD 3 for these and a Canon 60d for the more formal videos.
Where do you get your parts from?
From all sorts to be honest, Amazon, Ebay, Dime City Cycles, local dealerships. All depends what part I'm looking from, I'll go far in searching for the right part.
Yikes so much for light coats eh...
Low Sheen is such a poor choice for an engine. By definition the surface is uneven with lots of potential for trapping any and everything.
Full disclosure, I made the same mistake, but knew enough to remedy it.
Check out the final product, it was upgraded to satin
@@forthebold satin is just one name for a low sheen. Thus why some people call it matt while others call it satin. Both low sheen
Looks good though. Just often not a clean paint
Axa Axa there is a difference between Matt and satin. This one is Matt. Reallly dull. So satin is the inbetween of gloss and Matt
You have to go satin black .. matt is a nightmare unless you want a rat look
I'll see how it goes.
What you think of this 2018 Cafe Racer by Vanguard AWESOME or AWFUL ?????
ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=02e3R0co69s
V8 swap?
Yeah why not
why dont you use a mask or something while spraypainting?
I get that said to me all the time from my wife.
Was just thinking that the paint might be intoxicating for you, since you are in a small garage you might take in more paint to your lungs than you want. But hey, good luck on your build, love the series
Yeah, I should wear a mask, the doors are all open but you're right, it's always best to be safe.
heyyy
Hey
custom a Honda CB750.
I would love to one day.
And where was your face mask young man
I know, I've been told off by many a UA-cam for that, and my dad when he watches the videos! I do wear them when I paint the tank in tomorrow's video as that cellulose paint is a right stinker!
good to see the gs is getting some more love again soon
Complete respray next week and tank sealant should be here at the weekend. Not too far away now
Nice about to start powder coating my gs850 frame and build a custom seat pan from scratch
Amazing, what colours are you going for?
