    I also think, in my opinion, that its much quicker to water from the top. You also dont have to worry about any cross contamination. Because if you have a large collection, and you bottom your plants, you most likely group them together when watering to save time. And sometimes, when you group things together, they share everything..... including pests and disease.
    Your echinopsis subdenudata looks amazing, Lyn! Plump, healthy, and filling the pot with lots of growth.

    I water my Copiapoa from below as some of them have a bloom that would get washed off by overhead watering. In habitat they only get 3mm of rain a year so they've not evolved for a drenching. Hope you and Hans have a lovely evening Lyn 😊😊🌵🌵

    I usually water from the top. I only water from the bottom if the soil is too dry and the water runs past the soil. Then i might soak it. But i like to water from the top and let it wet the soil and run out the bottom to help wash out salts from building up from fertilizer & from minerals in our water. Thanks for sharing Lyn!!! Thanks for taking the time to do this. It came up as a discussion after your last Q&A video and so this was very useful. You mention the roots are 'stringy' when you water from below; why is that a 'bad' thing? Do they break more easily when you repot? TIA. Nick

    I currently don't have any cactus. Aloes and Jades and holiday cactus. Devout bottom waterer. I find the soil is more evenly saturated and just makes it a lot easier. Basically just put in four plants at a time, fill the sink up to about half way up the largest pot and leave it for about 20-40 minutes. After that empty out the sink and the trays of excess water move onto the next. Not sure if I'll do the same when cactus get into the mix. The only plant that I water from the top is my rubber plant, and that's mainly because it needs to be watered more frequently than the others.

    I sometimes water from the top and sometimes from the bottom. I like to soak about 10 plants at one time by sitting them in a tray of rainwater. I then walk away for a number of minutes to do other things. When I water from the top, it does not take less time. I don't like to water them through and worry about the extra water they are sitting in, so I pick each plant up and let it drip where it won't hurt anything. When I have the plant in my hand, I can then make sure the water is going all around the pot, I can go fast or slow, I can go around once or twice. I use a narrow mouthed watering can. Isn't one reason some water from the bottom to encourage deep roots all the way to the bottom? Usually the roots are most robust toward the bottom, but I never thought of them as stringy. I thought your answer to the question was going to be there is no right or wrong way, but if one never heard of bottom watering, the inclination would be to water from the top, just like rain. Thanks for your point of view!

    I have this issue with two of my aloes that are spilling over the rim of the pots, making it difficult to water from the top. Those I kind of have no choice but to bottom water. I think for the most part I top-water my cacti, they are all so small anyway so plenty of room. I had been worried though about top watering especially in active growing season that with top watering, water would flow through but not fully saturate the substrate, leaving dry pockets. Is this what we want for cacti? I know in native habitats, they have shallow roots to take advantage of any rain that comes quickly as possible.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  10 місяців тому

      I have to bottom water a few of my Aloes and other Succulents too as they are overhanging their pots haha, the good news with cacti is they can manage quite well if the water doesn't fully saturate the substrate as they have tiny root hairs from their main roots that are very good at taking up moisture even from the top of the substrate, I sometimes have to give my Cacti a second top watering a few hours alter especially with their first watering in the spring, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle XXXX

    I disagree with what you are saying about watering from the top because in my opinion, I think that this method can cause rotting around the neck of the plants. Bottom watering encourages stronger root growth because the roots are having to search for the water. I grow a wide range of houseplants, everything from ferns and jungle plants right up to cacti and succulents and I bottom water all of them. One final thought for you to consider is that top watering encourages the breeding and spread of fungus gnats.🌵😁
