Really looking forward to the CDT, I've never followed anyone walking it. My favourite hiking in Australia are the trails where I see no one else all day.

Yes the CDT is way remote,I think I was the only one who thru hiked it in 93,only met four other section hikers 🤪 I also biked it in 07 from Jasper in Canada, that was a blast.I only mention the cycling after your chat with Dylan.I love both, also went from Anchorage to Tierra Del Fuego once, that was a blast 14,000 miles 🙈

I recently sold some raw land on the NC Blue Ridge near the AT for the same acreage in N. Arizona near the Grand Canyon for the nature "gap" reason you explained. Thanks for this insight as it gives more clearly the answer to a lot of questions I get, and I'm sure others, as to why. Never thought of it this way re: small time gap. Happy (and safe) Trails!

Beautiful sections of trail. Good point about the nature gap. CDT in Oregon seems to have it, at least in this section. Lots of varied terrain. Enjoyed the obsidian forest, too.

I have known of the CDT for many years, but until you mentioned it, I never realized it was the longest of the three.

Owl & Elk encounters (plus ~ the BeAuTiFul Morning, Ohhh ~ so peaceful) BUT I was anxious about the paw prints and thought MOUNTAIN LION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which would be SCARY, as well as THRILLING - w/o an attack, of course. Be safe, healthy, hydrated, dry, warm and again ~ Thank YOU for sharing your journey.

Interesting with the DCF tarp. Hope you get that resolved. Agree that wet sleeping gear is awful, and that having to pitch camp in the rain is unpleasant.

    Awesome.
    Yeah positive thoughts aren’t water-proof 😂
Can totally relate to the beauty of moving through an open valley, a CYTC is just that taken to the Nth degree and no-one can take that away from you. Is it fun? I don’t know, is living your dreams fun? Maybe people should be looking for more in life than fun.

I have definitely put my bag in the dryer on low and never had any issues. It’s good if you have a couple tennis balls. I have only done this in large commercial dryers. I never heard of my issues. To be honest I rarely do this. If air drying worked thats great. I treat my gear very gently but if I was freezing in the dryer it goes. Hang in there.

I would use some seem sealant on that central seem of your tarp.

I'm looking forward to the CDT too! The hilariousness of people wondering if a CYTC is fun! It myst be the most fun that can possibly be had in this world to be able to walk those trails within a short period of time.
Did you figure out the tarp? If you set it up as was seen on the AT, it is your set up. If you set it up properly on the PCT, then it is the tarp. Sometimes when there is a seem on a tarp that seem is not well made. There can be more material on one side of the seem than the other. Then it will sag and drip there because it will be impossible to make fully stretched.
When yoy set up a tarp, always begin tying a string as tightly as possible between two poins at avout mid thigh hight. Lay the tarp OVER this string. If there is no wind is is enough to stake/tie it down in the four corners. With a string under the ridge, the ridge will not sag and it will be possible to make the sides completely stretched and flat.
Anyway, it can be hard to find a campsite when it rains too much. Which is why I got myself an uncomfortable, super lightweight hammock for those times. I tie the tarp, the hammoch underneath, then drag together stones/branches and make a platform off the ground for my backpack underneath the hammock.
Lovely crunch sounds from the different types of ground you were walking on.

    • @JaruWalks
      @JaruWalks  Місяць тому +1

@@mikaelaolsen8835 interesting, I might try the string trick. It is the tarp, not the pitch.

I'm a hammock backpacker when there are trees (which is nearly always, east of the Mississippi), and it's so much nicer in rainy weather to be up off the ground!

      Why were those
owls divebombing you? That is freaky. And scary to me. Could it be because there was a nest nearby?
