    Glad I watched this before buying a leash for my dogs. I never knew how bad those were till I watched this video. Thanks for putting this video up. God bless ya and all your efforts in teaching us what to do and what NOT to do with our dogs, also the best ways to train our dogs.

      The burns can be worse than a regular leash if you grab it or let it grab you the wrong way, but just use it properly and you'll be fine.

      I was about to say, a retractable leash tripled the amount of area my dog can explore and enjoy exploring while we are out on a walk. It changes their lives. If it's a calm area without danger, use the full length. And they are even better than a normal 6 foot leash in that you can retract it down to just 1 or 2 feet if you need to pull them in really close. And it ends them getting their leash tangled up in their own legs because it never hands low with slack for them to step a leg over it. They are a brilliant invention and every dog owner should have one for their dog to enjoy life way better.

    The whole video is like "10 reasons you should never use a car" news post in the early 1900. If you know how to use it, then you can take advantage of the pros. If you don't, you can learn. Don't let your own stupidity ruin a good product.

  • @simfer_6782
    @simfer_6782 3 роки тому +25

    Well, to be honest. The waste majority of these reasons why you should never used retractable leash are caused by wrong manipulation with the leash. But that doesn't mean that a person who knows how to use one of these should not use it. Yeah it's certainly more difficult to learn how to properly use it... but these injuries... they're caused by wrong manipulation with retractable leash and not by the leash itself.

      yeah... these are stupid reasons. if you are paying attention and doing what you are supposed to be doing you will never have a problem with retractable leashes... she negated almost all of her points at the very beginning of the video... You can lock them at any length. Also, she has no clue how strong nylon straps are... the cheapest 1 inch nylon cargo straps are basically the same as 1 inch dog leashes generally can hold 1000lbs +-

    For me, I live in the country and my backyard is an unfenced tiny ravine. I use the retractable leash so that my dog is able to go the length of the backyard to find a good place to go potty. But also to maintain control so that they don't try to climb up the ravine. It honestly works perfect for my situation but I wouldn't use it for walks in public situations. My dog is a very laid back dog so it's not spastic or out of control going to the backyard to go potty and I've never and all the years lived here had any problems. So I definitely think that some situations like mine it can be useful but I think it's probably just best for most consumers to avoid retractable leashes.

  • @nedsled2994

    Silly. Use it responsibly. you can lock it shorter when you come up to a dog. If your dog is pulling like crazy on the lease you have not trained the dog properly. For a well trained dog it woks fine. I run 8 to 10 mile runs with my dog, it's way safer having the retractable lease that the dog does not "keep getting tangled in feet/legs" as the dog moves up and back while running with you.

    I was bringing my daughters dog out on his retractable leash. He is a hyper dog that runs the second the door opens..I was trying to lock the leash so he would stay close to me but it got stuck and within seconds I was yanked off the three steps and landed on the pavement on my face...I ended up at the E R thinking my nose was broke..it wasn't but my face on the right side was scraped from my forehead to my chin.. my nose was twice the size ... the hospital asked me about 5 times hiw it hapoened...they didn't believe me..the next thing I know a cop is asking me to repeat what happened..... nothing became of it but I guess they all thought my husband did it to Mr. Fricken crazy......the dog really did pull me off the steps

    Absolutely senseless advice . Retractable leashes have locking devices to keep the animal at your comfortable length. The injuriesound. made up . Seems that she has a grudge against retractable leash . I walk 3 small dogs all on retractable leashes , have had a doberman who I also walked with a retractable leash . All on the road ,and that too in India with awry traffic and gangs of feral aggressive stray dogs . Just causing unnecessary panic .

    I went through 7 dogs before I found ones that could withstand being on a retractable leash.. I had to get 155LB CANE CORSOS . Let's bring awareness to the deadliness of retractable leashes.
    The other thing you could do is get out of the state of mind of being scared like a ninny and get in the mindset that a dog is a responsibility and YOU are the reason the dog is the way it is. If it's good, it's because of you. If it's bad, it's because if you. Being scared of a leash because it's DANGEROUS doesn't make you a better master of your animal. Can't even count how many times I heard the word dangerous in this video...all over a leash.

  • @lillipupzilla

    I just bought a retractable leash because I thought it would solve a couple problems for me. When I go running with my Chihuahua it's difficult to maintain a proper leash length, sometimes the leash (attached to bungee cord and harness of course) flops and hits against his chest, or he will stop suddenly to sniff something and I have to quickly let go as to not jerk or drag him. My thinking was that a retractable leash would reduce tangles, keep the clasp held up, and provide leeway so I don't accidentally jerk him.
    But, reason #8 about what happens if I drop the leash handle has me second guessing myself, it hadn't crossed my mind that the leash could snap back and injure my Chihuahua. It probably weighs more than he does! Would you have any recommendations for how to run with a little dog safely? I live in a rural area so people and other animals aren't really a concern.

    I use one with my small dog just like the leash in the video. So far the leash has worked great tho i do see that it may not be great for every situation but the rope dont get tangled. I could make it longer or shorter. If see him going too far or bout to cross a street without me i lock it. Could give him a little more space to do his business and find the right spot to pee on. Stop him from chasing larger dogs or cats. Keep him by my side or give him some breathing room. May not be ideal for every situation but seems to have been working great for me. Maybe even better than a regular leash wouldve

    I have a deaf dog who doesn’t pull. The retractable leash is useful because the tension needed to communicate to him on walks is always just a click away. One click, a slight movement of my wrist, and he has stopped walking and/or is looking at me for a hand gesture. When circumstances dictate, we’ll walk with a non-retractable lead.
    The safe use of retractable leashes depends on the owner, the dog, and the circumstances.

    I dont like these leashes but using one now. Let me explain. I sitting in a wheelchair and i can¨t hold my dog in my hand. I have an electric wheelchair and has the leash to my chair. Jag bought a retractable leash and i pulled it out the full length. Than i cut it to right lengt (same as my old regular leash) and tied it to my dog harness. Now when we are out the leash is the right length to do his thing and its short when we meet others. But since its retractable it dosen¨t gets tangled up in my chair. So actually its a saftey för me and my dog. Its dosen¨t hurt his neck due to the harness, he is safe from my wheels, if he jerks away he dosen¨t pull on hiss neck due to hiss harness. Many exampels you say its dangerous is dangerous for regular leashes as well.

    Ok the reason about the feature for your dog to go far, as what you stated of 20 feet.. i dont think any owners would just willy nilly walk a dog on the street letting the dog go 20 feet away from them. I do believe the feature is there for dogs to be able to go a little further into those brushes or areas they sniff without the owner being pulled in with them. At least for myself i always give my dog the healthy 4-6 feet distance and lock it and only unlock here and there when he chooses to go sniffing further into the shrubberies..
    Second, you mentioned if a dog is a puller and strong etc etc. well yes i agree in that particular case the owner SHOULD not use a retractable leash. Again alot of these issues are not caused by the leash… its all a matter of training and special harnesses/leash that will give the owner a better experience
    Does it injure dogs? Mmm i dont think so. At least its not the only leash that can cause injuries to a dog if not properly used.. meaning no one should leash a dog on a collar. Like you stated the injuries occur mainly from leashing a dog on their collars and that applies to the regular leashes too so, this argument is invalid.
    You also can get pulled easily by a dog with regular leashes as well, if not more… so the argument that these leashes can cause that and “road burns” is also invalid
    These 10 reasons all kinda mesh and is just the same 1 reason just repeated over with no real solid arguments to back up with. I take it you work with dogs and thats awesome but let the owners use leashes as they please because ive never seen anyone get rope burns from a retractable leash actually ive seen more of that with regular leashes.

    Hi! I'm thinking about getting a small dog and i'm actually considering getting a retractable lead. Please don't be pressed in the comments, i'm looking for everyone's input and being mean or passive aggressive makes me value your opinion less.
    I was thinking very hard about this. I know all the stigma in flexi-leads, i know they cause injury and i know they're dangerous and I understand it gives the dog the wrong idea-- all the points mentioned in the video.
    I'm thinking about getting a small dog, less than 25 pounds and I want to use a flexi-lead. not in the way you would think, though. When I first heard about flexi-leads, I thought 'oh that's cool! it's a 26 foot long leash that's in a tiny container and you don't have to carry something that big!' but then i saw all the stigma and improper use. how people just let their dogs run wild, not using the lock mechanism. But consider this. 26 foot of lead is VERY good for training purposes, and even exploration in big fields. they have a lock mechanism-- why don't people use it? What i'm thinking about is this:
    going on a walk with your dog. she's excited and ready, but you live next to a busy road and it's not safe. you don't have a leash under 6 foot, which would be a little too long for your comfort. you're not gonna get pulled into the street by your 15 pound dog, but you still would feel better with a 4 foot leash. you don't want to have to carry 2 foot of leash. so you get your retractable lead out, lock it at 4 feet or whatever is a close comfortable fit for your dog to heel next to you, and go out take a walk.
    i'm not going to let her go wherever she wants to. she's not going to choose her own length. i get to choose the length im comfortable with, then with recall training i get to choose the length and adjust it however i see necessary. maybe you get to a less-busy area, and you want her on a 6 or 10 foot lead. boom, you have it, lock it there. never on the dog's conditions, only yours.
    is this a bad idea? if so, please explain why? I don't see why i should have to buy a 30 ft training lead when I can just use something like a retractable lead that can go to different lengths upon reason. if you can convince me that it's just THAT bad and i should never, please go ahead. i won't buy it. im a very persuadable person and im looking for input for a reason!

    • @ThePetParentingReset
      @ThePetParentingReset  3 роки тому +4

      I feel like you've kinda answered your own question here. Different cities/states have different leash regulations. Some are 6 ft. while others are 4 ft.
      Having a flexi-lead not only allows your dog to potentially get further away from you, but the really difficult part is actually the lock. The lock is a great way to turn your dog into a puller.
      The lock is not designed to be used during a walk. If you lock while your dog is walking, it sends the wrong message to your dog and can even be harmful if you attach it to a collar.
      I also do prefer to use a long line (or lead) for training purposes because there is a time and place for giving your dog more space, and it isn't on an every day or every walk basis.

    • @DiGiTaLdAzEDM
      @DiGiTaLdAzEDM 3 роки тому +2

      See my comment above. I have used a 'flexi' lead for over 10 years. Initially for two large dogs weighing a combined weight of 170 lbs using a coupler. Yes, you must think carefully about how to use the unit safely for both handler and dog(s), and stick to that. But, that is the same with any tool. I have not done this, but a wrist loop attached to the handle might be a good idea to avoid the it being yanked out of your grip. I mainly used my lead for my two previous dogs as a way to keep them from 'running' on me during hikes in the backcountry near my home, or along the coastline. And, also as a training aid. Once they were reliably trained for recall, I no longer needed it most of the time. It allowed them much more freedom on hikes than would have been possible on a short leash, and made it much easier for me to handle them on 4 mile hikes. I just purchased a 'Flexi Giant XL' unit for a giant breed 4 month old puppy for the same reason--to keep him with me on hikes until he is properly trained. Up to you--personally, I have found this to be a very useful tool. There are tons of brands/models available--some are no doubt unreliable junk . Be sure to buy a top quality unit if you do go with a retractable. I like the 'Flexi' brand as they are made in Germany, and I have had good luck with them. But, I would say that even in their line there is a range of quality. I prefer a heavier unit with a tape rather than a cord. Hope this helps.

    As a dog owner, (almost) all of your reasons conclude if you have a fast or energetic dog. Our dog is a very calm dog that does not like getting away from his owners. Plus we use a harness (he is a small one). ATTENTION DOG OWNERS OUT THERE: If you have a calm/less energetic dog this MAY be fine to use.

    Several of the reasons you gave are either not applicable to every kind of dog, or just greatly exaggerated. I prefer a regular leash on the street because they are simpler, but I use a retractable leash when I'm hiking or trail running. They are great for that. A dog can be trained to walk/run with more or less freedom at different times and I like to give my girl that freedom when I can. I attach it to the shoulder straps of my backpack and she often times even helps to pull me uphill. Now there is some skill involved with it's use. I will admit that there are some potential dangers if you don't use it properly, but that goes for many things. You might injure a smaller bred or an older dog, but you won't injure an athletic mix breed dog like mine just by pulling it back or by it running out of slack on the retractable leash. My Bonnie loves it and she's worth it, so I love it too 😁👍

    Sorry I disagree with you. I would rather have a retractable lead, where I have control to either have it at 2 feet, or 12 feet.. rather than have a 2-foot static lead.. then go to an of lead area, and let my dog loose, where i will have no control what so ever. Dogs need to run around and have their zoomies when they want, which they cant do on a short static lead. With a retractable lead, its the owners choice if its short, or long. You cant call a fork a bad device if the owner stabs themselves in the hand with it.. similarly a retractable lead is a fantastic device if used correctly.

      Agreed! I would never use one around roads/other people/dogs. But I have a sighthound and he needs to run. I don’t trust him not to go chasing wildlife or run up to other people or dogs when we’re out walking in the woods, but with a long flexi leash he can run around all he wants while me still being in control. You just need to use some common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

    Not a big fan of retractable leashes either. From my experience, a lot of people that use them just don't have great control over their dog and they use them because it makes them feel like their dog is pulling less.
    Normally I just use a thick roped leash, or a chain leash (I like the way a chain looks)
    However, I do use a retractable leash on occasion if we're going to a non dog park so we can play fetch or do some training stuff.

If I´m heading to a populated area (people or dogs or whaterver) I make it shorter and he has to walk at my side. No tangle no accident no cut off faces or fingers or legs hehehe. If there´s an open area without anyone, I let it freer. COMMON SENSE :)

    I had a scary situation with one the other day, and am trashing. I only used in the parks. Worked okay during the pandemic, when I was actually working to stay as far away as possible. 16 feet was actually a nice reminder to me. But now parks are much busier with team sports and dogs, etc. She's actually pretty well trained and I am a trainer (well back ground never worked at), but to me training is useless on them (so forget the "just train your dog bs"). I'm an older guy (73) and have a Corgi. There was a rather aggressive dog and my dog does not see dogs as a go away sign, but a more come to me thing. She got to the end of it (it's actually a shorter one at 16 ft), and then pulled. Well no where for us to go--I fell on the ground (not dragged--she turned immediately) and not on some nasty tree roots. I didn't lose her or anything, kept holding. I'm okay but scuffed up. I have NONE of these problems with an actual leash (though I do think a softer cotton, leather or biothane are superior and less likely to cause chaffing or burns.) It's the tool that's wrong. I don't think there is any safe use.

    Well, since I have a dog reactive labernese I'll never use it. i just feel so much invaded by bad owners who uses these leashes or long leashes around in the city. My city has a 1.8 meters leash lenght. I always use a nylon leash for my dog because if I don't see ducks, motorcycle, dogs, skunks, geese, wild turkey, cats or racoons, she'll be lunging and barking at them. Strangely, she will not chase bats since they're too fast or she can't see them. I have a leash that i have to wrap around my left hand sometimes quite tightly and now I changed my choker for a harness (it's red and it matches her very used red leash). My dog is 6 years old btw. My fear with loose leash or retractable leash is that, the other dog will reach my dog's threshold and that's when my dog will lunge and bark at them. I already managed to lessen her reactivity when the other dog is on the other side of the street but not when they come very close to her.

    Hello, I am also a dog trainer, and I have some extra reasons not to use that thing
    - The lock always fails over time, and eventually when the dog pulls to hard, it will not hold
    - The plastic handle is not only uncomfortable, it completely renders it useless one of your hands (as opposed to normal leashes you put on your wrist), which is a problem if you have to act in a fight with another dog or just pick up your dog's poop
    - Dogs are very fast, and if they see something and run towards it, we can't put the lock on that fast, and they can end in the middle of the traffic or something like that
    - If they go too far from you and meet an aggressive dog, and a fight starts, the leash is so thin, that when you try to control your dog by pulling directly on it, you only manage to burn yourself the palm of your hands
    - They are a public hazard on the streets. if the dog is several meters ahead of you, when he reaches a corner he will cross the street long before you, and if a car just turns the corner, the driver most likely does not associate that the dog is with you, and he probably won't see that thin string... and that will cause a serious accident
    - in a park when playing with other dogs, the leash can easily become entangled in the other dogs' paws or necks

    Ok so these leashes are perfectly fine if used property. First of get a tape lead, then the chance of injury is basically zero and get a safe brand that has been tested on strong dogs. The brand flexi is tested really good. Then before going outside with the leash train your dogs on all sorts of situations with the lead. Drop it and let it drag behind the dog. Let it tangle in their legs (would never happen but just in case your dogs should automatically stand still). And only use the lead if you have a good recall on your dog (just like always if you let your dog loose) i dont really see the problem here. All the reasons you mention is just improper use and generally bad trained dogs. Dogs are smart enough to know that some things is fine on a collar and other things is fine on a harness. My dog doesn't pull with a collar and pulls with her pull harness and my belt lead. It's fine just teach your dog what's allowed in different situations. It's nothing wrong with the lead it's something wrong with the use.

    • @515aleon
      @515aleon 2 роки тому

      Flexi tapes are superior. They are very much safer on legs, fingers, and so on. I wouldn't call them safe though. But do not keep a person from being pulled over-- I mean a person who would never be pulled over with a regular leash.

    In all due respect....you should never learn to ride a horse....too dangerous....you should never go ice skating....too dangerous...your son should never play football....may end up paralyzed you are a woman who lives in fear. I totally agree that retractable leashes should not be used in some cases. But I have been working with dogs for many years and I love using the FLEXI...this is an excellent brand, once they went to the wide tape kind. My 15 mo old Golden Retriever will even heel on one. I, of course, do not use it in every situation..but there are so many excellent uses for it....and I have heard other trainers say the same thing. Just like anything....you need to learn to use things properly. As a parent...you have to let your child learn to drive....even if he could get seriously injured. To come on and say , ''You must never use the retractable leash,'' is just bogus. That is your fear talking. And wrapping anything around your wrist, especially with a very large dog on the end is not wise advice.
