  • Here is a full review of the first episode of Age of Samurai: Battle For Japan, which was recently published on Netflix. Is it historically accurate? Good? Bad? Let's find out.
Link to the shogunate channel / @theshogunate
Samurai were the military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan.
In Japanese, they are usually referred to as bushi or buke.
By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai were usually associated with a clan and their lord, and were trained as officers in military tactics and grand strategy. While the samurai numbered less than 10% of then Japan's population, their teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in modern Japanese martial arts.
As aristocrats for centuries, samurai developed their own cultures that influenced Japanese culture as a whole. The culture associated with the samurai such as the tea ceremony, monochrome ink painting, rock gardens and poetry were adopted by warrior patrons throughout the centuries 1200-1600. These practices were adapted from the Chinese arts.
In general, samurai, aristocrats, and priests had a very high literacy rate in kanji. Recent studies have shown that literacy in kanji among other groups in society was somewhat higher than previously understood.
Some samurai had buke bunko, or "warrior library", a personal library that held texts on strategy, the science of warfare, and other documents that would have proved useful during the warring era of feudal Japan. One such library held 20,000 volumes. The upper class had Kuge bunko, or "family libraries", that held classics, Buddhist sacred texts, family histories, as well as genealogical records.
A samurai was usually named by combining one kanji from his father or grandfather and one new kanji. Samurai normally used only a small part of their total name.

If that’s the direct quote from the show, then they’re not wrong. They’re not saying “it is the finest sword,” but “it is regarded as the finest sword.” A lot of misinformed people do believe it’s the greatest sword ever made. However, it seems the show didn’t clarify or correct the misconception, and they also show the katana as the main battlefield weapon, so there’s that...

I feel like the sensationalization of it is making people think iaodo is not a real martial art. It SHOULD be obvious to everyone a sheathed katana against a guy with a polearm is not optimal when you could start with a polearm AND a sheathed katana, but I understand some people have no working knowledge of this kind of stuff outside of movies, shows and video games.

They went with what they knew and what they thought their audience knew which isn't much. So a lot of things that could have really pushed the docuseries into interesting territories was missed.

My wife, who is Japanese, is a big fan of historical books "fiction" (stories based on/featuring real events/people) and has read a lot about this period, so when I found the series on Netflix and started watching, she was amused. Neither of us is as well-studied on the weapons and armor side as you, but even I noticed some jarring things, and my wife probably simply won't watch it. The style is typical for the current generation of comic-induced productions. One of my daughters remarked that everyone performing seppuku appears to first go to a room with a nice clean set of tatami mats, so they could get a fly-over shot of the quickly growing pool of blood on it. File under "light entertainment" with a note of "gory" and unfortunately a large dose of accurate history in the storylines, so not so easily dismissable.

First of all, love your channel, especially your review of Ghost of Tsushima.
Secondly, yes, as far as documentaries go, this was a hot mess. I thought it was going to be a story, Romance of the Three Kingdoms sort of thing. I have watched the series and I must say that expertise of those historians who took part in narrating the series is debatable, at best. Sometimes I think they weren't really sure what they are saying, oftentimes it sounded like someone just gave them a script to read, like it wasn't their real opinion on things. The thing about katana being the best sword in history also kind of set the tone for the rest of this production, as I am aware of at least one blade that is regarded better (Polish hussar saber). I was also expecting more on how the trade-off with Portuguese happened and how on Earth did Japanese came into possession of arquebuses. I think that definitely the series had some specific audience to please and they kinda did. Not meaning to sound rude, but I think it was done in a way that 'eh, Americans are not going to delve too deep into this so why bother?'. Usually documentaries on Netflix are really good, but this one not really. As a show - great thing to watch. As a piece of educational content - not quite.

The katana use was the first thing that popped out.
For years now I've been coming up with the lore for the Japan-like fantasy world and the story begins with a battle that a reader (if I ever write it) should find suspicious because the samurai are having a Hollywood style katana battle. That should be one of the first clues that the two sides are actually working together and that the battle was a just a show.

"Regarded as the best sword" is different from it objectively is. It isn't inaccurate to say in modern times many people do regard the katana as the best sword in history. Also this really shouldn't be as big of a problem to people as it is. Regarding something as "the best" is highly subjective and contextual. I personally love Polish sabers more than Katana, those curves, the fuller the thumb ring, beautiful swords that had a ton of work and craftmanship put into them, but I really don't have a problem with anyone if they personally think Katana or Shamshir, or tulwar, or Polish sabers are whatever are "the best", it's totally a subjective personal choice that people come to for various reasons. What is the best to you or me might be different and that is totally fine. There is so much context of what "the best" even means, what year, what location, what type of enemy are you fighting, artistic style etc etc.
People need to chill with the katana bashing it's becoming as obnoxious as the katana fanboys. Yes the Katana isn't some lightsaber that is made by pure magic and folded 50 million times; a sword that is capable of cutting through a modern army tank. Some real dumb myths about katanas being almost magic absolutely did exist on the internet years ago, I remember it well back in the early 2000s. However these days 9 times out of 10 It's people bashing katanas and "myth busting" myths that have been thoroughly debunked for decades. Seriously I can't even remember the last time I saw someone spreading these myths in the last 10 years, but I see people bashing katana as if it makes them clever on a almost daily basis.

Another type of armor, which a Samurai wore under his Dou (Cuirass) to cover the gap on his belly, was a kind of mail shirt/vest or even mail voider. The Samurai chose either Manchira (a kind of Brigandine) or mail (woven chain), because either of it provided with some protection for him, but was not as rigid as plate armor on his actual Dou, so it still provide with some mobility.
