When he said about talking of a favorite topic or subject and doing it for hours, I have a similar experience. I went to my second Ren Fair but at the time I had joined the Spanish Conquistador house. I got there at 10, dressed up and ready to hold my spot at the table. I welcomed people over, asked them what they knew, we even had a full set of armor and weapons for people to put on while I informed folks on both conquistador and Aztec facts. Suddenly the chapter master grabbed me by the shoulder, pulled me behind the front line put a bowl of soup in my hand and said, “eat, you haven’t stopped.” I looked at the time, it was almost 7pm! And I was so excited about teaching people and helping to put that armor on and have them hold the weapons, I had no hunger! And I had last eaten at 7 am!!
I cannot imagine the look of desperation on Saladin´s face after he successfully massacred the hospitalers and templars after Hattin, and now he got beaten again by those dudes at Arsuf.
i think its sad that people demonize the crusades, but completely ignore that the Muslims took Spain clear up until the discovery of the new world. Southern Europe was also under invasion in places like Sicily and southern Italy. in other words, Christian Europe was under attack from all sides.
When i heard knight errant I thought for a second this would be Ian LaSpina. This guys good but man, Ian LaSpina/Knyght Errant would've been fantastic to have had on here to discuss wargear and general living during the middle ages! That would have been soooo cool!
I've done mediaeval recreation portraying a Knights Bachelor in Arcre 1195 AD, we are holdouts against Saladin's conquests. I've read Steve Runciman's History of the Crusades (excellent) which is a lot to take in. But I can surmise that open battles weren't the first option because they are inherently risky ventures & everything can be lost in one dice throw, as to say.
Good material. Rand is clearly is a master of his subject matter, but his presentation would be so much better if he'd work on his delivery. There are too many "uughs," and "you knows." Those verbal tics sadly take away from the enjoyment of listening to him. With a little bit of practice, he would be absolutely stellar.
16:28 .....actually we do have an instinct to kill each other. But it is situational. Another man takes your woman, instinct says you kill him. However the human instinct to kill is similar to that of other mammals in the wild. When a fight occurs, if one side runs away then it's usually over. Men will fight over mating rights. Tribes will fight over resources(meercats are an example off the top of my head).
While I risk having my question interpreted as bait. There is a point in the video where Rand mentions the Franks practicing religious tolerance once they conquered the holy land. In the book "Warriors of God" by James Reston, he asserts that Godfrey of Boullion ousted the jews from their homes and it was Saladin who let them back in decades later. Is this assertion based on outdated information?
I love this channel, and just can't seem to get enough of this subject...... however...... hearing "you know" about 100 times in the first 10 minutes made it impossible for me to concentrate on anything they were talking about. I'm sad to say that I didn't finish the video.
Are you familier with drug use among Muslim troops to help make them more vicious and suicidal? Like in Somalia the militia gunmen chewed green leaves that drove them crazy and turned their lips green, and even the Nazi's were suppose to have doped their soldiers with methamphetamines and they would charge into suicidal attacks. Did Muslims use drugs in combat and in religious ceremonies and could they still be using them today to influence Arab combat and politics and to inspire acts of terrorism. Maybe even Mohammed himself doped his troops to make them more effective in combat.
@@ElBlancoPapi that seems like a gross simplification of the Islamic world. The Italian and wider European renaissance would not exist without Islamic scholarship.
I have literally watched your channel for hours. Wow more educational than the history channel. Love it.
+Tony Williams Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Yes, "History Channel" SUCKS!!! If you want REAL history, you have to get it from people like these guys
@@jb2532 yeah i gotta leave it as it is too. Its a good sign.

Finally a guest worthy of Real crusades History.
Certainly one of the best he's had on.

This has helped me tremendously write my college paper on the history of the crusades. Thank you. Keep up the great work!!

You mean you played dress up?
It's more to do with waiting for the other guy to make a mistake you can capitalize on.

Question, do you guys have any videos on the Byzantine Empire? Like the full history?
If you guys do have it, I’m having trouble finding it.
I've been interested in the crusades for ever now thanks
Thank you for new insight. This is a great channel!

I think it varies from leader to leader. At different times we see Muslims and Christians capable of mercy and unrestrained violence.
An excellent video! Where can I find this information Mr Rand says about religious tolerance in the Crusader States?
Great stuff here. Good research.
Fantastic stuff, finished too soon!
Going to check out Rand’s blog.

You know is so boring to listen too.
Great podcast
Thanks for listening
Keep up the good work.

Was Vlad the impaler's father a knight in the order of the dragon in the Crusades ?
Pity this is only audio. I like more action :-)

I see my Family Crest. The Black Lion is my Klan.

Liked, Subb'd, Bell'd and this comment completes the ALGO...!! 😊
Allen you are right. it is the devil. and he works through religions both Christian and muslim
Yes, but Islam is the Devil's chosen religion.....as it has NO redeeming qualities and is pure Evil
