I think, he could see firsthand, what cheating does to a person he cares so much about. He didn't have that emotional capacity earlier in his life, now he does. The fact he did have a history of infidelity towards his life partners, makes him prone to finally understand how heartbreaking, life changing and debilitating putting someone through that situation is. He outgrew himself and that's the best that he could do.
Scott's like that character in movies or shows where you absolutely hate them in the beginning but ending up to be your favorite because his character development is unbelievable
