Well it’s not that common (this ball is just for the highest society people) but usually when you’re 15-16 you take a dance class where you learn classical dances and you have your “Debütantenball” and then your ball season begins, where you go to all kinds of dances, proms and balls.But we don‘t have homecoming balls in austria.

I am so excited that this video has 1.7 million views! This was a special performance and ball for me and for my family. My daughter is one of the debutantes (she can be seen at 1:30 to 1:50 directly in front of the young Japanese woman and again at 1:56 and a few more times), and I experienced all this live in February of 2016. My daughter is now studying in Vienna, and my husband and I will visit her and plan to attend another ball as a way to relive the memories. BTW, I literally ran into Placido Domingo, one of the star performers, in the 'bowels' of the opera house (long corridors in the lower level) on the way to the lavatory. It was so crowded that I accidentally bumped into him, or he into me, I am not sure how it happened, but he was very gracious about it, and I had an amazing story when I came back to my table.

just for info: the parque floor is ~850 square meters and they have to raise the floor of the audience area (stripped of every seat) to get on level with the stage area to form the perfect ball floor. but the guest have free reign over every other floor to dance, including a full fledged disco, too.
Vienna was where the Famous Master Class Composers were born.Until Today,by watching this Opera,knowing that the Legendary still's carrying on.The way people attend,honoring is unique.I am wishing,one Day can attend a live Show like this.One never know the true passion may generate a surprising living's Spirit that not everyone can experience.

Whenever I have time on every kind of journey to or across Austria , I love to stop over Vienna or Salzburg . I enjoy the classy atmosphere everywhere - even on a sunny day there is music in the air , waltz and more ... ONLY IN AUSTRIA I HAVE THIS FEELING - AND ONLY THERE I AM TREATED AS A LADY !! I am 60 years old now , and I know the Austrian cities since I had been 17 . Even in that young age they had given me this feeling being a lady ... the Austrian men are true gentlemen !! Being in one of the wonderful cafés I am treated like a queen , even when I only want a Wiener Melange , that is a special milky coffee . They serve every coffee together with a glass of water , which is great , too ... ... I hope very much you might be able to visit Vienna one day to enjoy the same things like me ... When you have time to enter a concert at night your breath would be taken away ... so beautiful , elegant and so overwhelming are these events ... you know the music of the Austrian composers already . Most years the tiaras are really pretty, but 2016's tiaras are my LEAST favourite of all of them.
awesome to see and cherish. my next-door-neighbors had to live in Vienna for two or three years. They explained this in a way that differs from what is presented here: beginning with New Years, there were new years balls in Vienna well into February. There was the first, main, and most elegant ball; after that came many others. The Lawyer's Ball; the Banker's Ball; the Comedian's Ball; the Actors' Ball; .... and so on. I expect someone out there could improve upon my account. In any case it all sounded quite wonderful and more. :-)
yep, around 450 balls between New Years and Ash Wednesday and then much more later during summer season.
We actually have around 800 balls every year. Its a Tradition that the young people love and keep. Balls, Opera and theather is a Part of our lives nowone could do without. Regards from Vienna

Just returned from the dance school. Today was my second day and saw people dancing Wiener Walzer for the first time.

Indeed in the USA they still hold debutante balls but with Covid that must have put a stop here in the USA. I just enjoy watching these young people, everything is so beautiful, the music, the setting, the dresses, the flowers. Just lovely!

Wonderful - I love this atmosphere - and the Austrian speaker still calls the young Ladies "Fräulein" = Miss , I love it in the English speaking world , I love it in Austria !! 🌹
The performing dancers in the beginning wear very nice costumes , so do the young Ladies who are on their debut , all the white gowns are special , and they all dance with elegance - a great scene !
One funny thing : my cat has been about to lay on my lab > he stopped at first and looked at the screen ... he never did it before so intensely .... 😸

as debutant or just visitor ? debutant is 17y-24y and attendance only once in lifetime, if any. if you mind to fancy the event: ticket order available by now for the feb 11 2021 vienna opera ball. the trick is: you can mail in the order, but you are only get answer, if you were chosen at all.
most ppl never ever experience the chance to pay the exorbitant fees. ;)

you may know next vienna ball is feb 11 2021, how about send in your request to attend ? ;) be aware: it costs a fortune ... not because of entrance fee, but accomodation+robes :)
the nice part for debutant ladies: the tiara is free (because on the house ) *and* yours to keep yay :D
the maybe difficult part for all debutants: perfect knowledge of _vienna left waltz_ is a must. it is a version which includes a cross leg motion.

My personal guess is that this isn't the kind of event money alone can get you in, but rather connections.
You need to be a daughter of one of the rich families, but you also have to have connections and be kinda “famous“ amongst the high class in austria.
Technically, you have to fit certain criteria (age, dance experience), you audition and you pay €120 for your ticket. Not arguing that they may be a certain group of people but being a debutante is open to all of the public
It only costs 35 quid. That is no problem for any Austrian.
Why not its once in a lifetime event, she will remember it for the rest of her life

Wenden Sie sich doch an die Organisatoren bzw. an die Tanzschule? Meine Tochter hat ein Video vom 2016er Opernball bekommen. Mit Aufnahmen von den Proben und vom Heurigen etc. Ich glaube, die DVD kam von der Tanzschule Svabek.

There are 400 balls per year in Vienna alone. I just attended one on 17 January, and the tickets were €75 ; €30 for uni students. The dress code is usually strict, and a long evening dress or ball gown is required, which adds to the costs. You may also need dance lessons, as a ball is no fun if you cannot dance.
As for moving to Austria, speaking German and having a European passport really helps. I don’t know if that’s the case, and of course there are other ways.

@@rivenoak Yes, I know. Everything was cancelled in 2021 and 2022. I had tickets to the Ball der Offiziere this January, but it too was cancelled/postponed. I chose to exchange them for tickets for 2023, and I very much hope that it will take place as planned. I also managed to buy tickets to the Ball der Wiener Philharmoniker at the Musikverein, and now have two balls to attend on two consecutive nights: 19 January and 20 January.
