It's refreshing to see a quiet and contemplative film trailer that doesn't try to rock your dome into the next dimension with comically overused bass notes.
This comment is kind of ironic now since the trailer to Weerasethakul's new film Memoria has a similar meditative tone but also has a lot of very powerful bass notes.
When people don't understand or are bored by it they call it bad and pretentious. Not all art is supposed to be entertaining. Some art works are meant to make you think and feel or experience someone else's worldview. I celebrate this film because its wholly unique. It doesn't rely on meta film references and it doesn't rely on a regular narrative structure.
Good point. I did find it entertaining though. What's interesting to me is that I've seen this director's other work and much prefer some of his other films yet this one is the one that got him noticed and praised in the west. I've always wondered why it was this specific film that had the widest resonance with westerners and never heard any theories offered...
@@kayEnt3rtainm3nt I think it only had the widest resonance because it's the only film of this that most people have seen, because it won the Palm d'Or. Even then, I'm not sure how many people who saw it actually liked it. I think it will be remembered as a curious footnote in the history of film, and not much else
I saw this two nights ago. Absolutely loved it. It's so strange and really haunting. I love the use of different filming styles and the soundtrack of the jungle is brilliant.
Just saw this last night and it haunted my dreams. Very strange film, but taken as a whole, it's incredibly powerful....even if I wasn't always sure what was going on. I can see how some people might not like it. It demands a lot of its audience, but I thought it was brilliant.
Just saw this at the New York Film Festival this afternoon - a really lovely experience. Not quite the equal of his "Tropical Malady" or "Syndromes and a Century," to my mind, but that's a terribly high bar. Some of his crew were there, too, charming young people who were selling t-shirts and little bags with the movie poster on them to raise funds to help pay for their lodging and plane fare. My favorite filmmaker entourage ever.
I loved this film! Then again, I am a foreign film lover (I’m from the U.S.)! It is not a typical ghost story or thriller, in the sense of what most Hollywood-ized audiences would expect or be used to. It is slow, meandering, and deliberate. It’s enchanting in its mystique, and in the way it approaches the super natural from a Thai cultural perspective. Makes me want to see more like this!
I just want you to know that the language, which is spoken in the movie, is not Thai. It's called E-San language which is spoken in the North-Eastern part of Thailand. Anyway, almost everyone in the part can speak both Thai and Esan fluently.
More accurate to say it's not central Thai dialect. The Northeastern, or Isaan, dialect can also be said to be Lao or a Lao dialect. People across the river in Laos understand it well. In fact, many are close relatives of those people who happen to be living in Thailand.
Bringing genuine awe back into the cinema. Glad Weerasethakul is finally getting recgonition, in the west at least. I've only recently seen Blissfully Yours and Tropical Malady, but I've been blown away by them both and I can't wait to see this one.

@whenindoubtdo Since when was a "coherent plot” an essential in cinema? Do you look for a "coherent plot” when you read a poem? It’s a great shame people are so closed minded to film. People never compare a poem to a Novel ... So why do people compare films that adopt a poetic approach to films that are narrative based? Cinema really shouldn’t be limited to just narrative; it’s capable of much more. Really, are telling me when you read a poem, you will discredit it if it has no plot
Don't ask me why... But to me this is a genuine and perfect "part 2" of Kubrick "2001". I repeat..don't ask me why. Just my opinion. But this is how i feel every time i watch this masterpiece. Completely stunning.
This film is not pretensious. This film is not difficult to see. This film is not even experimental. The day you see Godard's histoire du Cinema or Edgar Pêra's A Janela (Maryalva Mix), your brains will explode. Films have nothing to understand, you just see and take your interpretation. I don't believe directors are fascists, they want you to take your own conclusions. Not every film is supposed to have only one meaning, those films which don't let you think are named "Mainstream". I don't have a problem with mainstream films, but thay are supposed to have only one message. Not mainstream films give you freedom to think about it and take your own perceptions.
What's that, a film playing in the jungle but no Stallone? ;-) Just kidding! If so many youtubers agree that this film is strange shit and a waste of their time, then this can only mean one thing for me: a DEFINITE MUST-WATCH! :-)
Some of the same actors as Syndromes and Tropical Malady , it's funny to see them again here... kept thinking the mother would going to walk off into the bush with a lover, and the young guy would turn into a tiger again ;) Sounds good, I wish him all the best with his film, especially in Thailand
Interesting that American Trade Journals such as 'Variety' and 'The Hollywood Reporter' disparaged both this and Malady, yet Malady went on to recieve the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2004, and this, as we see, has won the Palme D'Or.

@TheUmmwhatever Poetry is a trancendent ideololgy in all mediums. Whether you argue it has coherent plots or not that is usually not the aim of it. Capuring a moment, enviroment or a state of mind and seeing the importance of it despite its mundane exterior was the aim of most of the great poets." A narrative person will look at a tree and see how it could affect or be involved in a situation, but a poet looks at a tree and sees the importance of its soul entity." - A. Tarkovsky
@TheMassline Yeah, Thai language is used in some parts to make the boy named Tong understand because he is from Bangkok. But the main characters use Esan to communicate.
You can appreciate and understand this movie if you are a Buddhist and know Thai culture and Thai countryside life. Otherwise it is hard to be digested
Maximiliano Herrera I’m none of that, and I love this film! I am a foreign film lover, though. If one is open to new experiences, loves culture and people, loves new food, patient, meditative, even, then one can appreciate this film! Yeah, it’s not for everyone, especially those used to only blockbuster films from Hollywood. Probably why I dig it even more!
So then could you tell us (outsider) what it's all about? Was it about Uncle Boonmee reincarnation from time to time? Was he the fish, buffalo, monkey ghost? And what happened to Toong and Jen at their hotel room looking they're freezeing?

This looks interesting. Especially since it won the Palm d'Or last night although it wans't the most stellar of festivals.. I wouldn't think it's as good as last year's White Ribbon from this trailer but one must watch the film first before drawing conclusions...
In that scene, the actors were not there at the same time as the ghost. The shot was filmed offset with the three leads and an empty chair. They then reacted to the empty chair as if someone were there. Later, the actress playing the ghost was filmed without the other three leads there. The director then superimposed both clips over each other.
