John is so under rated. He has always been such a wonderful talent. I love his music. His voice is so mellow and true. Thank you John. Am going out to buy your book.
One of the things I like about watching interviews is that you can really get a feel for the person who you mostly only see on film, or hear on record. Here you get to know how neat of a guy john Oates is, and how much he contributed to the amazing duo, Hall &Oates. I love how humble and down to earth those guys are to listen to.
What I am struck by is how down to earth John is and Darryl for that matter. These guys are amazing and some of their songs should be part of the American songbook.
John Oates is really fascinating. I really enjoy every interview I've ever seen him do. Funny, warm, very articulate, and just a wonderful guy. Really good stuff. And yes, very handsome, then and now :)
John and Daryl's music was the soundtrack of my youth in the 80s Fantastic song writing and arrangements. Out Of Touch from Big Bam Boom. Love that track👍
John and Daryl hall 1985 concert on you tube the liberty 85 concert was awsome John reminded me of prince soft voice singing and his hair but his mustache and I new it was John oates
I grew up with their music! I love them both. Both Darle and John are awesome guys. I have great memories and I now love the stories I get a better view!❤
I saw John Oates play in support of his new Arkansas album a couple weeks ago at the Kessler Theater in Dallas. It was an awesome show, to be sure, and he had some interesting takes on a couple H&O hits as well.
Reading his book which I thought would be boring, but it's fascinating journey of an uncompromising artists. You feel like you are part of his road crew from his early days touring with his parents dodge challenger. Then the chevy suburban. Then the buses. Ultimately, the lear jets. A great story about his group's "bad experience" with their first management . Then they hooked up with the founders of Atlantic Records and a young Tommy Motola. However, this was no "starmaker" collaboration. It was like equal partners and H&O eventually learned to produce and make albums on their own. It was a slow burn and by the fifth album in the 80's they made it big. They give credit to a lot of musicians that made up their band and other groups that helped along the way. Also, you feel a great sense of history from the vietnam war to the rise of MTV and the excess of the 80's.
Saw him playing in a city called Southampton, England with his backing band about six years ago. Doing not only his solo work, but a lot of H@O material.
I have always said John does not get enough credit in this great group, I love DARYL but John always seems to be in DARYL, shadow, I will buy his book, looking forward to reading it,
I remember in the early 80s I was 11 or 12 getting dropped off at the skating rink and listen to all there hits that's what I remember love there music then when I was 13 or14 break dancing was out I was popping and licking white boy and lived your out of touch there style went with what was happening they always stay current and ahead of the game
you are a well thought out speaker.. interesting but that is the color of life...… words … every colorful one must have them... if you hold any ones interest..... love your enthusiasm.....
Love how they are admitting they were stoned for "She's Gone"... best song ever wasted by a top act... that should be a standard... that video probably means it isn't... but it fits THEM!
Just finished the book. Good for John starting new life in Aspen, and then meeting his new wife. Cool story on his interactions with his neighbor the famous writer Hunter S. Thompson, especially the funeral(...not going to spoil...read the book). Also, he kept away from going crazy on drugs/sh*t by staying busy with hobbies like tennis, auto racing, flying airplanes..etc. (this reminds me about how Sammy Hagar kept out of drug trouble with hobbies, also). He did get screwed by the record companies. See, when you are a big recording artist you can either get money upfront or later with royalties. If you take the cash, then the record company get's to collect some of the royalties(until that up front cash is paid...then artist get's royalty). Kinda like a mortgage, but after the house is paid in full you keep the house. Well, the record companies got paid in full, and kept collecting the royalties. Instead of sending it to the artists, the balance kept growing and they collected the interest on it. Duh, we didn't know where to mail the checks....F.U. music industry!!

We always love the smart guy...So happy you found your voice....I am going to love the man with a brain....sometimes you gotta love foul... it makes life real...I love that...We eat the men that are EATABLE? lETS BE REAL...lOVE. wE LOVE you BUT we will EAT YOU. Very interesting, Funny how you listen to a group all your life and don't actual know anything about them. I know one thing; I've always really liked and enjoyed their music.
John is so under rated. He has always been such a wonderful talent. I love his music. His voice is so mellow and true. Thank you John. Am going out to buy your book.
True it is the combination that works like a dream!
John is very interesting guy.

What a fine man, musician, artist. Legendary. He has never missed a beat and stood tall in his light.
I've loved John's voice and talent forever. It gets better with time! Thank you for sharing that part of your self with us.
Such a nice guy, and so talented. Had I Know You Better Then is my favorite of their songs, with John on lead.
Their collaborations are symphonic. Beautiful gentlemen. I love singing their songs. I even sing along with their "Ennui On The Mountain."😊
Hall and Oates made themselves music history. Long after both are gone their music will survive.
That's as good as it can get.
Two of the greatest musical artists of the past 50 years. Hands down.
John Oates is really fascinating. I really enjoy every interview I've ever seen him do. Funny, warm, very articulate, and just a wonderful guy. Really good stuff. And yes, very handsome, then and now :)

John and Daryl's music was the soundtrack of my youth in the 80s

Very interesting. I’ve always loved the talent with this group and I was always curious about their back story.
I didn't know that they got a long that well. Good to know. Down to earth, dude.

An incredibly talented, intelligent and successful person. I only wish I could have had his success. And his demeanor: pure class.
Daryl and John look like they maybe 50 or 55 not 70

I saw John Oates play in support of his new Arkansas album a couple weeks ago at the Kessler Theater in Dallas. It was an awesome show, to be sure, and he had some interesting takes on a couple H&O hits as well.
This was a great interview. Well told and listenable
Learned a lot about John, but there was background noise that took the attention away couple times. Thanks John for sharing, learned a lot.

He’s so handsome 🖤
My favourite band of all time
I'm listening while being hypnotized by the wobbling water bottle -- must purchase this book, must get the entire Hall and Oates catalog ...
The book is AWESOME!!!!!!!
John is incredibly talented (and still handsome) ❤
Been following these guys years They are the best can't wait to get John's book
Saw him playing in a city called Southampton, England with his backing band about six years ago. Doing not only his solo work, but a lot of H@O material.

I have always said John does not get enough credit in this great group, I love DARYL but John always seems to be in DARYL, shadow, I will buy his book, looking forward to reading it,
What a talented humble lovely artist.
I love him 😢😢😢
John, such an informative interview and enjoyable.
such a pleasure listening to him
What a great guy.
It's true. There are such things as friends who don't need to fight. It's about character and understanding I think.
great interview
5:39 - same rhythm as in 'My Girl' by Chilliwack
Hall and Oates vastly underrated
How can you say that!?!? They were, and possibly still are, the best selling duo in rock history, what an idiotic comment
Totally agree with you Lila, he's also always a great interview. Very eloquent and affable, understated also. Top bloke!
I love!!💕💕💕💕💕💕
They are soo cool 😎
Dude can't be 70 years old. He's looks better than I did at thirty-five.
Dr. Larry Mitchell Amazing what money can do 😂
I would bet my life that he has had some work done, looks pretty good though
Real Nice.

Very good singer and speaker.
Screw the book. I want to read the original unedited journals please!
Love how they are admitting they were stoned for "She's Gone"... best song ever wasted by a top act... that should be a standard... that video probably means it isn't... but it fits THEM!
He so smart
the record label should release many more new songs with him on lead vocals .Daryl should have him time in the spotlight limited
que homem maravilhoso aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I could listen to him all day.... incidentally, he speaks in a very similar style that Daryl uses... it’s actually uncanny. 😉
And I thought they stopped talking to each other for a while.
I was waiting for the water bottle to fall off the table.....
Daryl Hall gets Charlie Rose, John get the AV Club
Magnifique!!!Bravo monsieur Oates.Merci pour partager.
Oui!!!😸

He worked hard on that shit good like cheesesteak tho .
A Good Cat…I like him.
I don't feel so guilty about listening to Hall and Oates now
It's true that one needs a reason. For me it's their bare musicianship and capacity for great pop writing; not to mention the singing
Hall and Oates are F>C>B (Fucking Cool Bros).
They're both very smart, observant guys, but of the two - John definitely seems to be less edgy … and much easier to take a long car ride with.
Very interesting, Funny how you listen to a group all your life and don't actual know anything about them. I know one thing; I've always really liked and enjoyed their music.
Philly TV She's Gone referenced in interview

It's brilliant, subversive, but perfect.
👀👀👀👀👀
Never heard John speak. Lol
I’m loving his mustache and goatee. Very sexy.
They are most certainly BroMates
I'm 53 I thought Man Eater was about a Hooker "Many have paid to see what you think your getting for free"
