The dark lord has fallen. This was quite a shocking scene the first time I watched it. One usually expects the "starter" party to be wounded, traumatized and tortured across the entire story, not outright killed.
We still don't have much information. From what I understood as of now, it has something to do with bringing forth the power he saw in his dreams to the world (aka, shadow). However, we still don't know the specifics on why he's killing the contestants or why did he get so depressed after becoming a Shu.
They explained before this that Litost had a dream about the shadow calamity that occurred in the first few chapters of the story (since this takes place before said chapters), and Litost revered the power and "perfection" that the shadows had and wanted to bring them about by his own hands. Helia and Coralie believe that this is the "mortal sin" that his future self refers to, because, presumably, the shadow calamity grew far beyond what he could control. The future Litost's "depression" is a result of the regret from whatever he is about to achieve. As the previous comment said, we don't know what the contestants have to do with this goal, but the mysteries surrounding the Ten Shus War, Ruimu Tower, and the "gods" are most likely connected to it, since some NPCs have stated that the victors who enter the tower are never seen again. It could be that the victors are used as some kind of "fuel", and the strongest of these are effectively inexhaustible sources of power (which is a form of "immortality" as promised), but that's just me speculating based on some vague hints.
