I can't thank you enough. I am in Highschool and I am in Biology and i'm really struggling with identifying independent and dependent variables as well as control variables and this just helped me out so much! Thanks!
Thank you so much! I'm just starting out in high school and I never really understood this lesson. But thanks to this video, I now understand independent, dependent and controlled variables! I have a positive attitude towards tomorrow's test! Thank you once again :)
I'm quite embarrassed to say this but every time It's a struggle for me to indentify correctly all the possible IV that are in my experiment. The IV is the variable which values are chosen by the scientist and is also the variable that is manipulated by the scientist (apart from non-manipulated IV like genre). The IV is expected to create a change in the DV. The DV is the variable that is measured and that is expected to change according to the IV. These are the definition in my book but I still have some problems applying them to real experiments. An example I want to measure the effect of a game on the physiological measurement of engagement. In my head the game is a IV because it’s supposed to create an effect on the engagement but did a choose the levels of the game? No. What kind of operalization did I made? Is this a non manipulated IV? Years of university and i'm still struggling.
I am a PhD student it it has been very had for me to identify the DV IV and CV. This video was VERY helpful in explaining the difference. Thank you so much. You are a God sent! SL
I fully understand the difference now, thanks for the examples. I need to know this for my nursing exam. My study manual does not fully go into depth on what the differences are. THANK YOU!!!
Sir thankyou for doing this video. It really halped me a lot. By the first question I thought I was right but No ID: Different Rose Bushes DP: Number of flowers C: same greenhouse That was my answer to the first question
Very well done: however, I do question the 4th Pea Plant due to the fact that its watering amount is not controlled. The 4th plant's water amount would have to be classified as a dependent variable. Only if the water that the 4th Pea Plant received is measured throughout the 3 weeks and then compared to the independent variables of the other plants should its height be considered part of this plant research?
In number 2, you are also manipulating the sunflower plants to see how much they will or will not grow so couldn't they also be considered an independent variable?
Not in this case. The sunflower plants themselves are not being manipulated directly, it is the concentration of salt water that is being given to the sunflower plants that is being manipulated. The sunflower plants are control variables --> they are factors that could be changed (ex: using different species of plants) but are not in this experiment. If you did an experiment comparing how different types of plants (ex:sunflower, rose, tulip) grew in the same salt water solution, then the type of plant could be considered an independent variable. I hope this clarifies it for you.
Thanks! I was having the similar question. Your answer made it totally clear. :) Just one more thought, if there were a pea plant in this example, then the category of plants will be still Control Variable?
i am having different concentration of same drug+ control without drug and i m seeing its effect on 24 , 48, 72, and 96 hours..ON PARASITE....i want to do ANNOVA...SO WHICH ONE IS MY INDEPENDENT VARIABLES : CONCENTRATION OF DRUG AND DEPENDENT VARIABLE IS PARASITEMIA??/ AND WT ABOUT TIME??/ WHICH ANNOVA I SHOULD PERFORM??
I currently teach 8th Grade Physical Science but I am also an adjunct Biology instructor at a community college and have taught all grades & sciences from 7-12th grade.
Loved it helped me. I didn’t get the first four when I took my guess before he spoke I kept switching them but by the last one I got it and I so Ik I will watch this again to see if I understand before my test
All he does is say exactly the same thing over and over, until he finally got to the useful points. The actual facts were helpful, but everything else leading up to it was tedious and long-winded. A more precise answer would have been more sufficient.
I definitely appreciate the input. It may have seemed long-winded due to the fact that I was reviewing a specific assignment for my classes and going over each problem in detail. The target was NOT the general public in this case, but nonetheless I'll try to pay more attention to this in the future. Sorry for the long-winded reply :-).
Mr. Thiele's Science Channel I'm glad you can take a little critisism, and I didn't mean to offend you if I did, it's just that, even though you must know what your talking about, it dragged on quite a bit, prehaps more so because of the fact that I wanted the answer to a homework question quickly and precisely, and was not in the mood for a longer, more factual description. None the less, it still helped me out a lot, so thanks!
Pratishat Ghimire what? I never said I was an expert. In fact, if you had read my comment, it's the opposite; I needed his help to complete the question on my homework sheet. don't just assume without reading. It's obvious why I watched the video, to see how to answer the question.
Wouldn't amount of water and when water is given be control variables in the second case? And heat for that matter (e.g. have them grow in the same room , not different ones).
very good explanation, now I really understand what is independent variable and dependent variable..thanks to your time sharing all of these to us...,")
so... we are studying effectiveness of surfactant in ARDS patients over 2 years by giving them surfactant and observing their oxygen given to them and O2 in their blood and adjusting the amount of surfactant to be given according to O2 ... my DV is ARDS disease since it may or may not change, and my IDV is surfactant cause they are manipulating it.... that's right?! i have this after 5 days to present and i don't get ANOVA......XD im dooooomedddd
The one that the scientists change, not the experiment itself, like watching a movie, you choose the movie (independent), you manipulate it, but if you like it it depends on the movie, therefore it is a dependent variable
hello, i hope someome would reply asap. We are having a hard time to identify the variables in a research article and we were given an ample time to do it. I hope someone would help us
DRY MIX. Dependent variable Responds to the experiment and plotted on the Y-axis. Independent Variable is Manipulated by the experimenter. Independent Variable is plotted on the X-axis.
Im using this video to help me with homework... And i just realized the same question he's answering right now is on my paper

I found this very helpful (and not long-winded at all). I appreciate your easy to understand videos. Your students are fortunate.

Didn’t quite got the grasp of this, but I have an idea on how it works. Thanks for this, man!
You explain it WAYYY better than my science teacher. Thanks so much!
How'd your students do on that test?
In number 2, you are also manipulating the sunflower plants to see how much they will or will not grow so couldn't they also be considered an independent variable?

Oh okay. So because they aren't being manipulated first hand, they would not be considered a variable. Got it.
Thanks! I was having the similar question. Your answer made it totally clear. :)

Oh shit i didn't know this was for science until like 1:46 thought this was for math
3.5mins and still I need to hear his point!!! ugh!COME ON get to the point!
Distortion of judgements as a function of type of movie.
IV=distortion of judgements
DV=type of movie
Is this correct?
iv is independent variable dv: dependent variable
Excellent study guide questions!! Thank you!!
Thank you ❤ I have a test tomorrow
Best explanation of Dependent and Independent variable out there.
Thanks I’m in 8th grade and was assigned homework to this and idek what it is
Wouldn't time be an independent variable?
+Harnoor Dhillon that is a variable also but that is under control variable that could be change the experiment or not..
