Great interview with an interesting guy. Jock was an incredible surfer, and as a young kid growing up on Oahu, he was one of my favorite surfers. Those days from the early 60's and 70's were just a tremendous period for surfing in Hawaii and thusly has a major impact on my life. Again thank you for a great interview with Jock. Aloha, C A
Jocko is the MAN! whether he's giving his time to share a 30minute conversation with you in the supermarket, or keeping the stoke high in the lineup with hooting and laughter,, it's always a pleasure to see him in our small community. Big Up's JB for doing what you do, and bringing out the fantastic storytelling we all need to hear!
Wow, love coming across my old NS 60's childhood neighbor surfing school friend! Thank ❤ you for this wonderful interview ... as the decades keep passing us all by and us boomers pass on sooner or later ... all that Jock contributed to surfing becomes forgotten. And he was never about becoming famous, but was very shy. So it was everyone else around him whom became famous and are remembered most ... from this very special surfing era.
1971, I was 18 years old and at Fort Ord, June to November. My AIT was a field wireman too. Wonder if we were in the same company? I remember seeing Jock in the surfing magazines back then. Wow….
Jocko was and still is a hero of mine. In and out of the water. I've worked on a few jobs he was on as a carpenter and him roofing. Always a very respectful man.
Wow, Jock really warmed up into that interview. So many cool notes, especially the Fran Heath story, and the Hendrix / HB/ Hells Angels connection to the Brotherhood!
Jock's interview in Surfer Magazine in ~'67 (and his mentioning his college's view of the ocean) was the basis for my going to Hawaii in '68. Thanks, Jock! And, yes, I did get to surf Jockos several times, once on a clean 6' day by myself. In '78 I wound up spending the night in the former (president?)'s house on the campus of your Maui college! And then one night in the '90s, I got a call from my daughter saying she was at a party at Gavin's or your house. I told her the quick version of how you influenced me to choose Hawaii for college/surfing. She put me on hold to go tell you the story. I still feel like I owe you a lunch/dinner! ;-)
