    Well I am from Sweden and I "believe" SAAB is doing a very good job. This is a very nice, beautiful and effective fighter. Yes it is important you can take down costs and I believe that SAAB is working in the right direction. Brazil had the good taste to buy and take over the program, very good for the future.
    The man from SAAB seems to have a very good selfconfidence and off course he must try to sell this beautiful plane, high respect for the manufacture SAAB.

      $$$$ -- they have a real cash crunch up there and don't want to go into as deep a debt as the US but they WILL eventually have to make choice. Give them a few more years and even with the spares they bought from Australia, they're going to need to replace planes. Nothing they're going to be able to buy that's decent will be less than $100 million NEW in the West and the Russian planes (sorry!) are still not as good.
      We've had American planes (old F-18s) shed access panels during air shows. These things are literally creaking with age and they have to be replaced and retired for safety. We're probably at least 10 years past the retirement point for some of these planes.
      It's worse with carrier planes because of the environment they operate in -- exposure to more moisture salt, and all the stress of catapults and arrested landings. There's a reason carrier planes were rated for absolutely 20 years of use or 6,000 flight hours max. They're crazy to keep them in carrier service unless they do serious rebuilds. They retired the last A-D models in USN service because they were creeping against critical fatigue with the airframes. The USMC desperately needed planes and gladly took what the Navy offered. In the meantime, the USN upped its orders for Super Hornets but they're still short on planes.
      The US Navy decided it coudn't afford to keep the Tomcats in service with rebuilds even though they were offered a very good deal on new-builds and reconstructions by Grumman in the late 1980s. Nobody anticipated the tempo of operations would INCREASE after the Persian Gulf instead of decreasing. Everything's been harder than what they originally planned for.

      Gripen E Combat air patrol radius: 900 km (559 mi). Do you know approximate size of Canada?

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 5 років тому +4

      @@RHGM71 It's just over 4000 miles from the furthest east islands of Canada to the furthest west points.
      Huge, huge amount of territory. A plane with a tactical radius of just over 400mi is still considered short-range -- that's most of the current fighters unless they carry significant amounts of drop tanks. 559mi combat radius is in the low middle range. Only the larger fighters -- F-15, Su-27 family, F-22 -- have tactical ranges over 700mi average. Those planes have high internal fuel capacity or carry even more external fuel than the small fighters. The planes Canada uses (F-18) are highly dependent on air-to-air refueling or carry max-fuel or the bases are highly spread out. I'm sure they have the forces deployed to evenly cover the interior but the defense overlaps with American systems.
      All the planes in production are at least $100million a piece with spares. The Gripen E is significantly re-engineered over the previous-generation Gripen C and is virtually a different plane with completely different avionics and higher-thrust engine than the plane first flown in the late 1980s. It's not much cheaper than the EuroFighter ($120million minimum; the plane costs more than advertised like most in-production fighters) or the Rafale (close to the Eurofighter costs; again, everybody is playing with their numbers).

      No doubt it would be an effective combination. However if you look at it historically, Canada hasn't deployed more than one dedicated fighter platform. In case of war as far as I recon Sweden will not supply the countries with service/weapons. What is the whole purpose having fighter jets if not using them in case of war. I think they are loosing many customers with that logic. Either way US will sell far more planes than little sweden, not because they are much better but because uncle sam still dictates who is to buy what.

      +Brabble Master and you are basing that on what? The cost of the f-35 is it's steath and that the US had to make an entire new fighter. Saab already had their airframe and didnt need to spend billions on making a new one.
      It will have arguably the best AESA radar on the market (the raven), brand new EW. The datalink on the girpen has always been one of the best so i dont see why this would be any worse. It will carry some of the best weapons on the market Iris-T and Meteor to name a few (the Us might buy the meteor for the f-35)
      It can, just like the f-35 engage targets behind it and turn away and still have radar lock. I dont see where it's lacking except for stealth.

    All seems good, but selling military aircraft is more about political issues (bilateral as well as geopolitical factors) than mere technical superiority. Sweden is a neutral outlier and it doesn't have strategic defense-security ties with many countries, like USA, Russia and France, whose governments have a lot more influence and thus successfully push government to government sales of their own military hardware. Otherwise Gripen would have been a best seller to countries like India who are looking to fill up dozens of squadrons with Gripen-like advance, capable and relatively cheaper lightweight single engine fighter.
    India is under "pressure" from the US to upgrade its aging and rapidly depleting Russian fleet with F-16s and F-18s. Americans have also offered India F-35s but they are expensive and have a multi-year backlog. India is getting French Rafale as front line fighter but needs single-engine fighters to fill up many more squadrons. Meanwhile, SAAB has also offered to set up complete assembly and eco-system of Grippen E/F in India but it needs political muscle and influence that Swedish government doesn't have. India has its own single-engine lightweight fighter Tejas which is just going into limited production, but it is not as advanced and proven as Gripen. In order to make and sell 300+ Gripen that India could buy, SAAB should make a deal with Indian government to buy out Indian Tejas's development and production, and commit to employ displaced Indian designers and engineers.

    • @jacopochiefjaco123
      @jacopochiefjaco123 6 років тому

      Well, India's challenges are way different than, say, Brazil. China and Pakistan are a concrete threat. The gripen is a great fighter, excellent for air defense, but undoubtely inferior to the rafale, especially in condition of offensive counter air. I would still go for the french aircraft.

    • @skt1731
      @skt1731 6 років тому

      Back in 2005 India decided to get 126 Rafale - 100 to be build in India, but notoriously corrupt and indecisive Indian politicians and officials could not complete deal with the French because of dithering on price and technology transfer. Dassault would not guarantee quality because French felt Indian manufacturing was then substandard for such an advanced aircraft. Actually, there was political pressure from French labor because of job loss and also geopolitical espionage concern in western governments because India has been very close ally and major defense buyer of the Soviets and Russia.
      In 2014 India got the current nationalist government which, realizing Indian air force was dangerously close to depletion and obsolescence, finally signed up for just 36 Rafale at a much higher price - all to be fully made, armed and serviced in France. Russians offered better price and faster delivery on Sukhoi 35 but Indian fighter pilots are fed up with unreliable Russian aircraft and suppliers.
      India is now informally very close strategic+military ally of the US and Indians have just cancelled investment partnership with Russia to develop the stealth air dominance Su-57 for Indian air force. US defense majors Lockheed and Boeing are aggressively pushing to move complete production lines of older but updated F-16 and F-18 to India.

    • @jacopochiefjaco123
      @jacopochiefjaco123 6 років тому

      All true. From this point of view, SAAB policy of transferring technology would greatly benefit India. My comment was merely related to the aircraft itself and how capable they are.

    • @skt1731
      @skt1731 6 років тому +2

      Win win for both. Swedes and SAAB will get a prized customer and a low-cost manufacturing partner allied with the west. Indians will get advanced technology (including radar and jet engine) and of course a cost-effective first rate Gripen E/F to upgrade 12 to 20 squadrons. Swedes will be much easier to deal with than Russians, Americans and French. But the problem is that Americans are pushing their own older fighters and factories.

      The Netherlands already chose the better fighter by going with F-35A, which contradicts every claim made by the SAAB rep in this video. Gripen E will never and can never be anywhere near as advanced as the F-35, starting with the airframe, then onto the propulsion, then onto the radar, internal weapons bays, EODAS, HMS, and integrated RF/IR sensor suite. Sweden designs and makes some awesome weapons, don't get me wrong, but they'll never even come close to what the US and NATO JSF partners can do by sheer numbers game alone. The fact that Sweden relies on the US for Gripen propulsion says a lot right off the bat. SAAB is in a desperate state with the Gripen because if they don't make sales to finance their next generation answer to the JSF, their reputation will collapse in the 21st Century fighter market.

      Paul Chua The PAF should acquire the F-16V Block 70/72 Viper. The Viper is ko match against the Gripen C/D varaint that SAAB is offering. If SAAB offered the E/F varaint, then it would be a match against the Falcon. C/D version of the Gripen will be obsolete in the 2020’s. Plus it doesn’t have an AESA radar with less payloads. The Falcon has one of the world’s most advanced AESA radar that is equipped in 5th Gen stealth fighters such as the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II. It also has a longer combat radius and can be equipped with a conformal fuel tank for an extended combat radius. It also has more payload than the Gripen. That is why I think that the PAF should acquire the F-16V Block 70/72 Viper instead of the Jas 39 Gripen C/D.

    This interview/sales pitch is filled with so many demonstrably false claims, it begs the question as to what's going on in the corporate marketing philosophy of SAAB.
    "This is the most advanced combat aircraft in development anywhere in the world." F-35, PCA, Rafale, and Super Hornet Block III say otherwise.
    "It has a new AESA radar. It has a new IRST over the nose. These are key counter-stealth systems by the way." None of those systems have been able to defeat Stealth in many US modern combat evaluations, dating back to initial entrance of the F-22A, as well as the F-35. The AESA radars and IRSTs we've used are far more capable than the Gripen's. APG-63(V)3 AESA TRM count and amplifier sizes, plus the Digital filtering capabilities are in places the JAS-39 simply can't go volumetrically, and APG-81 can't detect other F-35s. F-15Es using Litening FLIR pods have always been defeated in the detection game against stealth, and the seeker and optical technology on the Litening pod is much larger than what you can put in the Gripen, with plenty of computing power and IR spectrum management capabilities when generating useful images at distance.
    "It has by far the most capable electronic warfare system in development anywhere in the Western world." F-35 early generation EW/self protection/deception suite smokes it. Not even a fair contest. F-35s are acting in the same roles as EF-111s and EA-6Bs or EA-18Gs normally do before switching to DEAD, then precision strike, and Air Dominance.
    Gripen will never be an Air Dominance fighter, only a multirole air superiority lightweight fighter.

    I must say, that Robert Hewson is one highly effective communications director for SAAB. Very impressive. That said, by July 2019 there's only 3 test aircraft flying? By end of 2020, testing is expected to be completed and production aircraft are expected to be ready for order? So end of 2022 for initial delivery of operational / training aircraft? Perhaps end of 2023 for initial combat coded aircraft to achieve IOC? End of 2024 for first combat coded squadron to achieve IOC - able to deploy?
    Honestly, that doesn't sound great, but perhaps it's still a viable and credible option for a strategic-based near-term (?) acquisition strategy, especially if production aircraft could be license-produced possibly??

Military standards are more relaxed towards safety for the user and normaly don't consider costs. Civilian standards don't expect an aircraft to be serviced that often and have much higher safety standards on the equipment.
