That grand, atmospheric track towards the end, before the chaotic end, might be one of my favorite moments in modern metal. I find it to be heartbreakingly beautiful and powerful.

Saw them play both parts of this as one seamless song recently, pretty incredible. Then they played their other 20 minute song. I think the reason this sounds so different from a lot of other metal is that it's recorded to tape with no click and there's a ton of Roland Space Echo or something similar on the mix.

Yea I came here to say I believe both of their albums were recorded to 2 inch tape.

Blood Incantation's album Hidden History of the Human race is one of my favorite albums ever and it's a lot better than starspawn which is what this track is off of. I'd really love it if you reacted to another track of off that one! By the way these guys record fully analog through tape!

Blood Incantation is totally my band. Focus on textures, dissonance, dipping into atonality, weird melodies, mixing of subgenres. There's very few bands like them.

@@adejalso false. Their most recent metal album wasn’t quite the same but still incredible. Their first two are very similar imo.

Oh dear you probably already have the list of stuff you're doing this week but something from one of Kayo Dot's first 2 albums (you've done a couple) would fit perfectly. All through-composed, very little repetition.

Nice pick. In my head a day ago or so I was like, I wish you reacted to something by this band, and here we are!
I just listened to their second album like 3 times today, which I find to be their best output. Solid overall, and has like an ancient space alien vibe. haha
One thing I do have to say though is that these are HARD first time listens, and definitely requires multiple runs, and you just gotta chug yourself through it, almost as background music or something... idk. Then it "clicks" and you're hooked. :'D

And yeah, this is modern old school death. Feels like late 80s or something, but then there's the modern touches... for some strange reason, it's so good. haha

I often find myself really wanting to get into death metal, especially at the techier end of the genre like this, the raw talent of the musicians to be able to play this complex stuff as organically and gmo-free as they often do is truly astounding. Unfortunately I rarely find anything to latch onto emotionally in the harmonic, structural and lyrical department, and the production is often lacking in allowing me to experience the brutality to a satisfying degree. It just seems like a really sick masterclass in virtuosic and brutal playing, which has it’s time and place, but isn’t for me, especially at this length.

Please react to Blut Aus Nord - Epitome XIV or Epitome XVI. I have a feeling you'll go nuts for it.

I took a peek at your Ko-Fi request page and there's Demilich in there, a band that is one of the inspirations for Blood Incantation writing. Might be cool to compare the two in some aspects.
Word of caution though - Demilich is way "out there", Blood Incantation is definitely more palatable.

    • @CriticalReactions

Oh neat. I'll try to keep that in mind for next Thursday when we get to Demilich

@@CriticalReactions don't get discouraged by the "unpalatable death metal" description, I think you'll find Demilich's antics entertaining. Their music is bizarre but that weirdness makes them fun.

Blood Incantation are pretty damn great. Definitely one of the best new death metal bands in recent years, and what I think is most impressive is how they mix newer, proggier aspects (especially rhythmically and structurally) with the old-school death metal aesthetics. Of newer DM bands I think I only slightly prefer Horrendous, but that's about it. Can't wait to see what they do in the future. As awesome as this track (and their debut in general) was I think their 2019 album, Hidden History of the Human Race, is even better. I just wish they'd be a little more prolific; only two LPs in the last 6 years is not enough!

Idk man, to me that was a purely death metal song building off the prog and technical elements of the mid 90's, but I don't percieve the many styles of metal you describe

was this an unusual song structure or was it so long that i lost all memory of the previous sections? who can say...
either way, yeah there were definitely some parts in there that clicked me and some parts that didn't
