  • Forefather is an Viking/Anglo-Saxon Metal band from Surrey, England. The band was formed in September 1997 by two brothers, who adopted the stage names Athelstan and Wulfstan. They recorded their first album Deep Into Time at their home studio (known as The Croft) in August 1998 and eventually released it in March 1999 on their own label Angelisc Enterprises to reasonable critical acclaim. Their follow-up The Fighting Man was released in October 2000, and owing to improved equipment purchased in part from the sales of their first album was of markedly better sound quality, and was positively received by the underground metal press. At this time the band chose to release a collection of demo recordings entitled Legends Untold on the German Millennium Metal label. Engla Tocyme (The Coming of the English) was recorded in late 2001 and released in March 2002 along with a re-issue of their first album Deep Into Time, with improved artwork and a bonus track. Their latest album, Ours is the Kingdom was released in June 2004, marking the bands move to the respected Karmageddon Media label, and the subsequent improvement in the general quality of artwork and packaging this afforded. As of this time, the brothers are working on a fifth full-length album, after taking some time out to work with the Folk metal supergroup Folkearth. Forefather released the new album, Steadfaston the Seven Kingdoms label in 2008, and has recieved very good reviews in the metal media.
    Most of the bands songs are impossible to perform live with just two people. They use a drum-machine in the studio, and have revealed in interviews that they do not like the idea of guest musicians working on the project, preferring to keep it In the family, as it were

      Me too! Been here since its release. Shame they never took off as high as they should have. Lack of touring probably had something to do with it. Either way. It will always be a huge fan and of theirs and share it whenever i get the chance. Proud to be proud!

    This is a tribute to lady Æthelflæd, "Lady of Mercians", daughter of
    Alfred the Great. She led men to battle against the invading Danes and
    Norse and defeated them numerous times. If we are to take the archetype
    of a shield-maiden seriously then she is definitely one.

    This album is a mark in time. Strong. Meaningful. GLORY, Steadfast!
    Spectacular song. It is reminiscent of one of my favorite pieces of metal: Mithotyn - King of the Distant Forest. The mood and atmosphere, the melodies, the speed, the guitar work in particular... Fantastic! 3:04 ... I feel I am happy, I feel I am at home. It's a simple beauty. I love keyboard synth, but for me it is a rare time here when I say it's not necessary. Forefather accomplished a sound to stand alone. To stand... STEADFAST!

    We English have a lot of Viking blood, my surname is old Danish and I live in a part of the country ruled by Danes during the Danelaw. Much of Northern England has Viking ancestry, the Saxons dominated the south, but the Northmen were very influencial in the north.

    I think calling Forefathers, "Viking"- metal is quite a insult, as they are Anglo-Saxon, not to mention many of their tracks handle about Anglo-Saxon restistance against Viking-Invasion

    There are so many things wrong with that exquisitely overgeneralized statement. Do you even Type O Negative, bro? Peter Steele was 6'7",got any girl he wanted, and was the singer and guitarist for a metal band.

  • @steverid
    @steverid 13 років тому

    @steverid brutal times in the history of modern civilization. No culture can escape their violence. The Vikings gave us many things we still use to this day. They weren't just bandits & warriors. They were the worlds best navigators & seamen. They eventually settled back within their communities in Scandinavia & became farmers, merchants etc...They married within the royalty of England & are the mixed ancestry of the entire U.K., Russia and many other places of the world.

    @thrashizam Laugh all you want my friend...........the Vikings settled all over the Island of England. It was virtually theirs up North. The dividing line was Wattling Street. research their history, it may just surprise you. Ever heard of Danelaw? Many, many town & street names are still of Scandinavian influence from the Viking presence. Not so funny now is it?

  • @NZealandKiwi
    @NZealandKiwi 13 років тому

    @thrashizam they're anglo-saxon metal, not viking metal, and anyway the vikings settled in Britain so yes, such a thing could exist

  • @steverid
    @steverid 13 років тому

    @thrashizam I understand & I also agree with you. All cultures have committed genocide in some form or another over the centuries. So I do understand what you are saying. I assume that embracing ones ancestry whether or not it is truly ones own makes for good CD sales etc... Subscribing to a "Viking Metal" or a "Black Metal" or "Whatever Metal" is a genre gimmick for sales. I dig the music & I also love the heritage of the Scaninavian Vikings, but I also realize that it was one of the most.....

  • @Ratchet11243
    @Ratchet11243 14 років тому

    @seaxwielder No 'Celtic' people has referred to themselves as 'Celts' until very recently. Celt is a generalist term for all the different people's that inhabited Europe before the Romans fucked shit up. The Boi and Aedui certainly weren't Irish but they are still considered Celts. Its like how Anglo-Saxon refers to all of the 'English' rather than the Jutes, Saxons, Angles, Frisians etc

    @steverid I din't think it was funny in the first place. I was aware of Vikings' invasion of Britain, but it's strange to me that one would appreciate the culture of the people who raped and murdered one's own. It would be the same if i made a Turkish folk metal band (I'm Serbian, by the way), rather than a Serbian folk metal band. Not that i hold grudges against Turks or anything, but i wouldn't choose their culture over mine because of the fact that I probably have some Turkish blood in me.

  • @Ratchet11243

    This is kinda true, but theres a major difference between 'Pride' groups and 'Power' groups. There's nothing wrong with pride in one's culture and ancestry, infact I think it'd be better if all cultures had greater cultural pride and awareness, but racists ruin it for everyone, they give a bad name to Asatru and Theodism (my personal faith).

    I don't think tall men listen to metal. Metal is for short men. It is a way for them to compensate for their height and smallness of stature. Tall men usually don't listen to music at all -- they are too busy having sex and making a lot of money -- but if they did, it would be something like Oasis or The Beatles or something innocuous and popular. Only people who are angry at the world need metal. Tall men aren't angry at the world, so they don't need metal. Short men are angry, they need metal.
