That doesn't explain him at all. If he was some warrior of note no one would have laughed at him. Ragnar would not have to have asked what his name was. He was just some dude that got lucky every time he went into battle.
This scene demonstrates what a great leader Ragnar was. Instead of simply saying yes to the old warrior and having him there by the grace of the Earl. He knew it would be far more meaningful and carry much greater weight to have all those who were just laughing say that they want him come. Not just for the old mans benefit but in verbalizing their desire for him to join them it consolidates his acceptance in the minds of those present. Thats a King.

Looking back now, this is the fate that Ragnar feared the most. You can see in his face that he understands the pain and loneliness Tostig felt in his long life. Ragnar saw most his companions and trusted mates die one by one. For reasons he deemed or saw as very mundane and unavoidable death. He hated rising into power only to be alone at the top. Which is why he said "power is dangerous. It corrupts the best and attracts the worst". He became earl and king not out of ambition but because he had no choice but to protect his family and friends' security in this corrupted world. When in reality he only wished to live a simple life. To gain knowledge, explore, discover and to have more lands to farm. Probably why he idolized Odin so much.
Mercurozel Nikolaj ha. That is what everyone thinks. But believe me. If we would talk about him like a real person, every man would want to be a king. Ragnar enjoyed it. In some ways, Paris was an anomaly for him.

they had that mentality that you have to die while you are still young and at battle. that's why they laugh. probably they don't think him worthy enough.
That's not quite how it worked. For the Vikings, your life ended when it was supposed to end. Those worthy of Valhalla would die gloriously in battle in their prime. Those nj unworthybwould die of old age. It wasn't that your skill was causing you to prevail, it was that you were being denied entry. If you were meant to die, a blade WOULD find you.

I know it's late comment, but my grandad was just like that. Lived through WW2, had a hard life, but he was always a fighter. But when all his friends passed away he sort of just gave up. I was sad to see :(
Peter K I can kind of understand. Imagine all the people you live and cherish, your parents, siblings and friends being dead. My aunt and mom’s parents both died years ago. And both my mom and aunt describes it as “the world being empty without them”. I can’t imagine the emotional pain. May God grant us all a long, happy and healthy life!
Ite I'm sick of people claiming Bohdi Sanders' quote as their own words of wisdom. Here's the full quote: “Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young. Old warriors did not get old by accident; they got old by being wise, having the right knowledge, and being tough. Never underestimate an old man who has grown up in a rough profession or a rough environment. These men have been around. They have done things, and experienced things, that you probably have never even thought about. They are tough, their minds are tough, and they have the knowledge, the skill, and the will to finish you off, if you force them to do so. A boy will fight you, but an older man will hurt you.”
This old viking and Ragnar end up being very similar. Both live to be old. Great warriors. Watch their friends die, watch the world change around them. Both feeling out of place as the world grows bigger than they could have ever dreamed. They both feel betrayed by the Gods for how their lives have become. Both chose the manner of their deaths. Both speak of Valhalla before death. I love this show
