A very important turning point of the history. If the Russians won,the war would be over for Germany before 1915.The battle of Tannenberg is the perfect example of how a small but trained army, lead by excellent commanders, could win against a biggest ennemy.

German warfare, it seems, stresses quick reaction, initiative and mobile aggressiveness. In WW1 the power of the machinegun stopped maneuver warfare in the west, but motorized infantry, tanks and airpower made such strategies available again in 1940.

    Two other interesting trivium.
    - The the Russians were sending all of their radio traffic completely unencrypted, the Germans were reading it all and following their movements exactly.
    - The battle actually took place closest to the town of Allenstein, but the German high command, on the recommendation of Hindenberg/Ludendorff/Hoffman, called at the Battle of Tannenberg as a reference to revenge for a medieval defeat the Teutonics had suffered, although ironically this didn't involve the Russians at all (Grunwald, 1410).

Two battles of Tannenberg - two different stories.
    First (1410) : Germans vs Polish-Lithuanian
    Second (1914): Germans vs Russians.
There is absolutely no coincidence between these two battles. Germans consider the second battle as "great revenge" defeating Russians, who were'nt involved in the first battle at significant scale

Becoming a prisoner would’ve been more humiliating. The Germans would have treated him well and he would’ve been exchanged for German prisoners or most likely kept under house arrest in Germany. He had a relatively easy way out if he just surrendered but he clearly was a proud man who would rather die than give up, and I respect that.

Wrong numbers at 4:06. 30000 not 300000 killed or wounded. 30000 escaped. 90000 taken prisoners. Corps organisation in numbers were in all WWI armies the same. One regiment a 4000 men, two regiments form one brigade. Two brigades form one division. Two divisions form one Corps. Samsonovs second army consisted of 5 army Corps, that were around 150000 unsupplied and already starving men. VI Corps, I Corps and XXIII Corps lost around one division each, XIII Corps and XV Corps hardly anybody escaped. Big victory but not 300000 KIA, one tenth of that.

All were full of hubris and overconfidence. Militarisation was one of the causes of WW1. The Germans in particularly over promised and under delivered - they gambled and the German nation paid the price.

Germany did not start WW1. It was orchestrated by the alliance system created by King Edward VII to encircle Germany England felt threatened by the rise of German military power, so, it was in the best interest of England to create a war in which Germany would be destroyed and a British balance of power would be restored

People will endlessly debate the causes of WW1 until the end of history. For sure Britain was uncomfortable with German ambitions to create a navy to match The Royal Navy and Germany's increasing interest in building colonies in Africa and Asia of its own, but your take on this is simplistic and one dimensional. It ignores so many other issues that fed into what happened in 1914. Not least the tensions between Russia and Germany and France and Germany due to German support of Austro Hungary and the Franco Prussian war of 1871.

Samsonov had just had his entire army blindsided by a numerically inferior foe and at least 300,000 of his soldiers were slaughtered or taken prisoner. I don't think it's entirely unreasonable for him to have broken down and decided to off himself.

Hoo boy, that canard is sure being passed around these days. While it's true that a lot of Americans had long overestimated America's contribution to the War, lately people are getting silly in pretending that it was insignificant. It wasn't. The Germans sure as hell knew that in 1918.
It's particularly tragic and dishonorable to see Americans with no idea what the Doughboys accomplished. Maybe the Centennial will inspire some education.

It wasn’t any American virtue or quality in its soldiers that turned the tide, it was the sheer manpower and supplies America could bring to the field. American troops were worse than their more experienced French British and German counterparts, but still 250,000 men a month bolstering the entente lines is a huge contribution. Also the food, guns, ammo, trucks and money the US could muster was very important. Americans have a romantic notion that their extra cool badass soldiers were superior and turned the tide, this isn’t the case, they were just more men to throw into the war, and quantity had a huge quality of its own.

    • @satidog
      @satidog 10 місяців тому

@@rhysnichols8608 Well, no. I didn't assert any of the things you're refuting here. In fact I point out that many Americans have long overestimated the contribution to the war and done the normal nationalistic thing of seeing our soldiers as particularly glorious. But you're just putting a bunch of stink on it and overlooking a lot of what actually happened. Yes, it was primarily American economic power translated to war that turned the tide of both world wars. And if not for just the expectation of America coming into the war, the French army, facing mutinies, may have collapsed. The Brits likely would have been open to negotiations in '17 because they knew there wasn't the manpower to face the million or so troops the Germans were freeing up from the Eastern front with the collapse of Russia.
And while I said nothing about especially "cool badass soldiers" you have done the fashionable thing of crapping on them as inferior.
Yeah, of course they came in green just as previous waves of European soldiers. But they were also thrown in much more aggressively at a time when most formations had become expert primarily in trying to stay alive. It was jarring in its own way. And as the months went on they, like the European armies that had been in the line for years, learned the ropes and became much more efficient and professional.

"which wanted to save the peace"
If they really wanted peace (which is preposterous) they wouldn't have gotten involved at all, since there was no reason for them to in the first place. It was a war between Österreich-Ungarn and Srbija. It is doubtful that Germany and Russia would have fought, considering the Tsar really did not want to fight and the Kaiser was rather indifferent. It was only France's official involvement that finally pushed Russia to war.

You wrote up the Versailles treaty with us (specifically making a clause that blamed us exclusively) and when we refused some of your terms, especially the blame clause, you threatened to engage the rest of Germany proper (we already allowed you to have bridgeheads on the Rhein).

There is nothing wrong or unworthy in using one's strength to its best advantage and for Russians it's their superior manpower. Germany, with smaller population and fewer resources, had better trained and equipped armies because it must, but this itself does not make the German army superior to its Russian counterpart, and if you thinks so then you completely missed the point of this video, which focused on Germany's' often superior mobility and military leadership.

The British remained atop the naval spending, and made sure they stayed that way. By 1914, the naval race was effectively won by the UK as Germany's economy was already pushed to the limit from the naval acts ten years earlier. By 1914 Russia and France had expanded their land forces to the effect that overwhelming superiority would be a fact within just a few years. Look at Germany's geopolitical position and you might see a bit why they were a bit anxious.

Also, if the French nation really had wanted to stay out of the war, they would have told the German ambassador that a Russo-German War would cause no conflict with the French and they would've stayed the hell out of our war. Instead, they got involved because they saw the EWK as a way to "take back" Elsaß, a stupid notion because Elsaß is German anyway, and has been since the 1st century, long before Karl der Große and any concept of a French state.

"perhaps the German social-democrats would have stopped the military establishment which wanted a war "Now or never". "
I highly doubt that, just look at the support for war in the government offices of France and Britain. You were just as eager to fight as we were.

I agreed that Germany had the more advanced military in many ways, the only thing I disagreed with in your original comment was your attitude towards the Russians. Their lack of training or equipment doesn't make them less worthy as soldiers (their war crimes do), personally, I have great respect for the resilience shown by the Russians in WWII.

Probably. They might not have won, but if they went on the defensive against Germany and focused on fighting her (much weaker) allies, they might have survived the war without a horrifying dictatorship that would later destroy Eastern Europe.

Then what the hell were your various plans for attack that had been conceptualized by the French General Staff since 1898? It was France's hope to "regain" Elsaß-Lothringen, it is the focal point of why they got involved in the EWK. Also, France was much larger than Germany, even with our now lost eastern territories, and economically on the Continent France was only second to the Germans, which isn't as poor as you'd make it out to be.

de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlacht_bei_Tannenberg_(1914) According to Wikipedia, the Germans had 38,000 fewer soldiers. And yet they were victorious against the Russians. And they had hardly any losses, unlike the Russians. This day is a monument to the strength of the German. Nevertheless, war sucks. And best there is no more war in the world. I also wish the Russians no more war. Just as little as we Germans. War brings more suffering than good. Peace of The World.

Germany has forsaken war for good. When remembering War, the motto is "Nie wieder", Never again.
Russia is a deeply nationalist nation. Every May 9th their motto is basically "We can do it again". And now they are at it again.

No. The only partitions that should be brought against Poland are the ones that would bring back Pomerania, Silesia, and East Prussia. Belarus and Ukraine should be partitioned to give back what the Soviet Union stole from Poland in 1939.

Germany was not dominated by the military until late in the war when Hindenburg and Ludendorff deemed it necessary to win the war. Until then, the Kaiser made all decisions. It was the same in Russia, except Nikolai was weak and listened to any suggestion.
And no, your militaries were not and are not subordinate to the people. Who decided to go to war in Britain and France? The people, or the government?

Germany didn't start the war against France, it was France the country that declared war to Germany after Germany had declared war to Russa... At the begining of the war both sides thought it was going to be a quick war... France wanted to use the brute force to win... but germans had a plan, that was to invade Belgium and take the french out from both sides... that plan forced the british to act and take part of the war...
