  • This TDC Tutorial is a bit more noob-friendly than other content I've uploaded previously which had assumed quite a bit of background knowledge of the audience. GWX SH3Commander.

Good video for the beginners! Here are some small notes:
The magnetic pistol in Silent Hunter III is actually an impact+magnetic combination! Even the official manual that comes with the base game tells so: "Switches the torpedo detonation mode between I (impact only) and M (magnetic plus impact detonation)."
The gyroangle basically shows where/how much your torpedo will turn after its straight run out of the tube. Many skippers like to go for a gyroangle close to 0 (straight-line shot), because making the torpedo turn will carry more risk of errors.

Your magnetic pistol torpedo can still be lethal if it misses the original target. Example: you set a 5 metre depth setting and it misses your target, but hits a ship with a draft of 7 metres in the next column. The impact pistol triggers when the torpedo hits the ship. It has happened to me more than once.

Hey, Just wanted to say I've just started playing silent hunter and this has been AMAZINGLY useful. I've been eyeballing all my torpedoes and hit maybe 1 in 6, I tried all the guides but couldn't do it, but you have dissected it in just the right way that I understand it now!

If you're on a 90° attack course like in your example, just bring your periscope to 0 and set AOB to 90 degrees, since you already know the ship will be at 90 passing your 0.
Then bring the gyro to both 0 by turning your scope and you know the bearing your torps should leave the tubes.
This easy way I sank ships from a distance of 1km to 1,5km in the thickest fog without even seeing them.
Just wait until it reaches the perfect shooting angle according to the gyro.
All you need to get right is the speed, as it's the most important factor.

I taught myself trig/nav, etc doing manual solutions with protractors on the screen and operations on notepads. No TDC.
In game TDC seemed to be more of a dice roll than an actual physical computation...

Its a mod called GWX (dont remember what it stands for) but it has alot of QOL improvements and you can make the game more realistic(sometimes in ways that might negatively affect your enjoyment) but overall its a good mod

I've only just started playing but I believe I got it on the TDC panel mouse up to the top and you'll see tools. Clicking on the question mark brings up manual input tools should bring up the bearing angle tool

Yeah I'm pretty certain he is using the GWX Onealex mod. I stand corrected if I am wrong. And for the record, Onealex is pretty awesome.
      **EDIT**
I'm going to correct myself here. I had no clue GWX was a mod itself. I thought the GWX Onealex and GWX was all in the same.

If you're referring to the rings around my ship position on the map, they're in meters and are supposedly spaced 100m meters apart as you move out each ring. I'm using GWX and I believe that compass layout is just default, but it's sorely missing in stock SH3. The lines going straight out from my position on the map are just relative bearing lines. Anyway, the outermost ring reads 1500m, whether that's accurate to the map or not is debatable.
