I've watched three of your lessons. You speak here about the marvel and wonder of scripture being opened to our understanding and attaining enlightenment we never thought possible. You have provided that for me and as far as I can read, many others. I am deeply grateful for your efforts as you put your money where your mouth is. You not only study the word and gain knowledge and incredible insights, but then you share it with the world and you have been a light to me. I look forward to the times I can "study along side you." And I look forward to hearing what you have to say, especially on some of my favorite passages. I look forward to how you will make me love even more those parts of the scripture that are already so precious to me. Thank you again!!!

Yeah he's a firecracker full of wisdom and knowledge. We humans cannot get that alone, but divinity must dwell upon us, and then within us. That won't happen with pride, because it blocks out God. Humility is this man's strength. Humility is the glory of the creature, and pride is the downfall of man. Willful sin isn't possible without perfect humility. Jesus humbled Himself before His Father, and His humility became our salvation. And His salvation becomes our humility!!

As a farm-kid, the metaphor of the harvest has always communicated with me a strong sense of urgency that non-farm kids may not sense. I learned from the youngest age that if a crop was not harvested in that small window of time available, financial ruin awaited my family. In a subsistence farming situation in Josephs time and in many places today a failure to harvest could mean starvation. Most farmers now and in the past are trying to beat upcoming rainstorms or perhaps cold that could ruin a crop. A sad site is to see an unharvested crop in a field blackened from mold or a frozen crop that is wasted. I learned that during harvest time is no time for procrastination, excuses or complaining. It just has to be completed before we could breath easy. I think there are good spiritual parallels to the Lord's work. Just like the time before the Lord comes is limited, my time in mortality is limited and there are things I need to do before the end.

Thank you for that excellent explanation! I'm a city-slicker, so I fear that some of the best insights from the scriptures (that were taught in a far more agricultural time) are lost on me. Thank you for sharing your insight!

After it was finished she asked me for the link as she was very interested. I have been lurking and learning for a while now. Bro. Jared, I thank you for your wisdom. I still classify myself as a newbie convert. I became a member in 2015 and find it difficult to study by myself. My husband has a difficult time reading the scriptures. He is older and when he sits and listens to your lesson, he gets very sleepy and eventually heads off for a nap. I love how you bring together scriptures from the different books that we use. I still havent read the complete D&C yet. I am more into doing Family History than studying the scriptures and studying with you is so much easier for me. I thank you for your time that you take to make these videos for us all. I pray that you receive all the blessings in store for you.

WOW - I had been brought into the church about 4 years ago & now almost 72 yrs of age. My husband passed away 5 yrs ago. When I was younger I brought the Missioners over to my parents & studied with them, but I couldn't at that time be Baptized because of my husband & boys it was a ruff time. My parents were & I was so happy they founded the church of their own. So after my husband passed I was found again by the Sister missioners. I was Baptized & Blessed with the Holy Spirit I cried so hard I didn't realize what had happened. I was introduced to the Temple, & still I really didn't know what I was to feel. I had no feelings of why this was going on with me. Now after listening to your talks I now understand what it is & how I am feeling. Or the feeling is there but why? Thank you - Reading the Book of Mormon about 4 times I still didn't understand what I was reading. I came to the understanding that 2 tribes killed off each other, not knowing why...You explained it so clearly & bring it in with the Bible was like the door was opened & I now understand the means of things I kept asking about. I understand what all parts of the Temple is... No more guessing. I am also a History Consulted, I have been doing my Family History long before joining the church & I am loving it more...it is hard doing teachings over the phone & not going to the Temple to do the actual work. My green signs are still in my computer & growing, I don't want to print them out & loose them. I really appreciate all your talks & you still keep opening doors for me. Thank You & Bless you & please continue...I am learning line upon line - Thank you

Best news I've heard in a while! Congratulations, my brother. Honestly, the times I feel closest to God are the times I'm repenting for having been far from Him. It takes courage and faith, and you've got that! We just keep getting up every time we fall, and the Lord prepares us to stand a little taller and a little firmer against the next battle. One of my favorite names for Him is the one mentioned in Jude 1:24 - "him that is able to keep you from falling." Trust in that!

I love what you said about asking God. You need help? Ask me! I’ve been pondering a lot about the importance of asking God and trying to teach my kids the importance of asking.
Instead of saying “I need a drink.” and then looking at me and waiting, I’m like “ask me! Don’t just tell me what you need and expect me to hop to it.”
God is saying the same thing. It’s a much healthier dynamic to be asked instead of told. Don’t know if that makes sense but it’s powerful to me.

One of my weaknesses in life is sharing too much to soon robbing my hearers of growing to know. Thanks for teaching a old hand how to lead one to the fountain, but also allowing the ones I lead to learn to drink on their own. A blessing I send from the power of my heart & mind from the word of God...
Silver & Gold I have not, but what I have I give you freely rise up with your family and receive the healing of the Lord you have desired & prayed for... Be made whole knowing God has heard your cry and knows your needs in Christ our Lord I bless your home, amen.

Wow the GIFT you have to teach even after my surgery and the pain I feel, I cannot stop listening to your lesson. The part of Joseph and Oliver in Heavenly Father's wisdom in order for the first step to be baptized as we know it, and correct me if I am wrong they had to temporarily have the Aaronic Priesthood to be baptized, then receive the Aaronic Priesthood to prepare for the Melkzideck Priesthood. And yes scripture study and prayer is so important so that we may gain a full knowledge of what we learn and why. I just found out from my 19 year old after all these years watching him grow and completely 4 years of Seminary and was so close to becoming an Elder, he finally confessed in hopes I did not kick him out of home, because he is going to college, which was hard for him to open up. " Mom I don't have anything against the church, however I am Agnostic" I remained calm because he does suffer from PTSD, DEPRESSION, SLEEP EPNEA. I said I love you, I won't kick you out lols, the only thing I ask is to allow us to have family prayer, and make sure you pray before you leave when going out, which he does before this conversation. The missionaries were over and had left a pamphlet because my son had questions, after the missionaries left my son said what do I do with this, I said keep on your desk in case you do have a question you can go through it, my son said okay. Its still there. What else can I do but pray.

You are adding WONDER and AMAZEMENT to the Scriptures from You Vast Storehouse of KNOWLEDGE. President Dallin Oaks, in address a Youths Fireside, answered the question of HOW He studied the Scriptures. He said it was much like preparing to eat a meal, expressing Gratitude, asking for a Blessing But unlike the meal which usually ends there, in Studying the Scriptures He asks for and invites the Spirit to enlighten His mind that He can be guided in His Study and Gain the Wisdom and Knowledge that The Lord would Guide Him to and Ponder what The Lord would have Him DO. In Your instructions You have just borne Testimony, inadvertently, to President Oaks admonition. Thank You.

Bro. Halverson, for the first time in my life, I feel like I get it. I have listened to the 1:00 hour mark 3 times now. This is where you start talking about the seminary student. I am starting to understand preparatory priesthood and it's role and then the role of melchizedek priesthood. I get now that repentance and baptism through the aaronic priesthood prepares me for all that the melchizedek priesthood has to offer. Elder Rasbands talk being recommended to the Lord says "Your temple recommend (which the bishop issues aka aaronic priesthood) opens the gates of heaven for you...with rites and ordinances of eternal significance, iincluding baptisms, endowment, marriages, and sealings" all melchizedek priesthood. Today taking sacrament was a different experience for me. The Aaronic priesthood hood administered, as I repented and renewed my covenants. I get it! (Or at least getting it)

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  3 роки тому +3

Beautiful comment! You DO get it! And so cool that you're seeing the Temple Recommend in this context as well. I used to think it was just "quality control" that made us get the same interview twice, as if the Stake Presidency interview was there to "double-check" the bishopric interview. But in reality, it's being recommended first by the representatives of the Aaronic Priesthood (the Bishopric), and then recommended by the represenatives of the Melchizedek Priesthood (the Stake Presidency). Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Being recommended to the Lord has been 'waxed' stronger for me as well. I like the candle making comparison because our understanding grows as we study and have mortal experiences. My parents (in their mid 90's) realized that their temple recommend was soon to expire. They have not been able to attend the temple in over 4 years because of health reasons but it was pressing on their minds to get it renewed. 2 weeks ago our bishop went running and Elder Rasband's talk was next on the playlist. That night he came to their house and interviewed them and the Stake came afterwards. Last Sunday, the bishop went early to church and found on his desk the approved recommend for my Father, we then contacted him to let him know our Father was 'called home' that morning. As I write about this experience, the thought just came to me that God's house is a house of order, and having that recommend allows this 'preparation process for presentation' if you will, to be a sweet experience. (I'm still thinking on this angle and am still in the immature stage of it :) But I know the gates of heaven were opened for my father and I know he is now preparing heaven for my sweet mother to join him someday for all eternity and they will enjoy the blessings from the Melchizedek Priesthood because of their works and faithfulness.

2 Nephi 32:3 - ... feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.” Exegesis
2 Nephi 32:5 - “... if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.” Hermeneutic

The whole idea of the ministering angels has been very much in the front of my mind - particularly as a young women's president. It's just as important as John the Baptist's mission to prepare the way for Messiah the first time. This ministering is alive and well in preparation for His second coming. I love that it's also personal to every person's own spiritual journey from being introduced first to messengers, and then to the Lord himself.

Jared I've listened to probably all your videos, and as a recent convert to the Church during this cultural, and economic upheaval, and even seeing your earlier videos before I told my wife as I should Go, and Grateful that she joined me, and gained her own testimony. In the subsequent months since we were extended callings as Ward Missionaries and your wise sentiments "Here a little, there a little." have helped me to better understand my role, and others in small but meaningful ways in addition to precepts I gained in Nicene Christianity that the Restoration fulfills, and completes even if there will be always more to Understand. I came by way of Personal revelation that testifies the book of Mormon is true by the presence of the Holy Ghost, and the Bible testifies of the Holy Ghost precept upon precept we see that the Bible, and the Book of Mormon testify of Eachother, and I often wonder why I never could see it. My wife and I first learned about the book of mormon through an episode of South park of all things, and we found the story to be fascinating. Weeks later I met some Elder Missionaries from Brazil on the street, and I did not feel comfortable hearing what they believed, but a great sense of Love towards their cause swelled within me, and I gave them words of encouragement. My wife had a similar encounter with some Sisters it took 10 years later, and an extremely long string of coincidences, and before that was the little dusty blue book I found in a closet, my mom stuffed it in there after missionaries came to our door, and I read about this guy named Lehi years later when I could read it. but I do remember them at the Door, when she accepted it, and that was the only time I recall they ever came to our door.

After listening to this great teaching, I was able to discover that the Lord did open a Vista for me to see, when I studied the scriptures, past what I thought I could see. I felt the Spirit, and then I went to read my scriptures, and a Vista of understanding was open to me that I had never considered for the building up of Zion. I pondered the cause of Zion and wondered what it was. The Lord showed me the cause of Zion is building up the kingdom of the Lord, yes. I also was able to see that, that Zion started in the hearts of individuals which spread to families which then spread to communities. Individuals will come together and bring with them Zion to the place of Zion. Zion will be established in the hearts of the people long before it’s established in a physical location. What is Zion? Zion is the Pure Love Of Christ manifest through the will of those people who have taken upon His name. That is just my personal understanding.

Well tonight was the first time in a long time where I do not have my grandchildren so I had no excuses. Seriously, your video popped up so fast and my finger just hit the play... like I wasnt in charge. Hahaha. Seriously though. Anyways, for so long I have been bothered by my children falling away from the church. They pray, they have church videos for their kids, they have wonderful expressions of gratitude yet they are not married to members of the church and that seems to be the excuse to not be active for them. It is totally killing me. I have been praying without ceasing to know what more can I do. This video taught me a bajillion things, but what the answer was, "the wine press in the vineyard and getting those stains on us" ... that was literally the answer to my very exhaustive prayers over the months and years. Well, so thank you first off and secondly, if it is alright with you and everyone here. I'd like to stay. What an incredible talent for explaining the gospel and helping with the visualization. Such a peaceful perfect spirit and you do not make anyone feel uncomfortable while teaching. Susan, my lady, don't fret. The Lord is more interested in the salvation of your children (and grandchildren) than you are. I learned that lesson on my own with my kids. One left the Church, and I felt helpless to work with her. I prayed. I asked the Lord to touch her. People came into her life that touched her. Her mother talked with her and worked with her; I talked with her and did what I could to help. Then one magical day the right (seemingly random) person said the right thing that put her on the path to come back.
I can see in my mind's eye as she recites the story of this one brother talking to her, that his comment was inspired, to be sure, but nothing earth shaking. He probably had no idea his comment had the impact it did. He was a good man who listened to the Spirit, and it is obvious that he did as a part of his daily walk. This was just another time when the Spirit prompted him to say something, and he did. At least that is my thinking of what happened.
So my dear friend, let the Lord work His "magic." This is work, and has it under control. If could do it on our own, then we'd have no need to pray and rely on . That's not the plan. The plan is all about us learning to rely upon the . I've seen it work right before my eyes.
And, at the same time, I've seen parents who keep hammering on their kids push them so far away, that it seems like nothing will bring them back.
The Spirit I get from watching these videos, and bringing Bro Halverson into my home, teaches me more to rely upon the Lord, and let Him work, picking up the slack where we can't do it on our own.

    1. I have grown in my understanding of, and appreciation for the way The Lord speaks to us individually through the scriptures, while simultaneously speaking to the "body of Christ" at large, often without reference to time or location; while also speaking to individuals and groups within a specific timeframe.
    2. I experienced an increase of depth and breadth of understanding relative to the relationship between the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods. The ordinances of the "lesser" prepare us for the power and blessings of the "greater".
In the preparatory gospel, we enjoy "negative gain" in the form of the remission and elimination of sin. We can enjoy "positive gain" in the ministering of angels, and the feeling of the cleanliness of a worthy vessel prepared to be introduced into the presence of God through the ordinances of the Melchizedek priesthood, starting with the gift of the Holy Ghost, and onward along the covenant path!
The plan, and the process are perfect!

That baptism made me think of how a male asked the visiting authority to give them a priesthood blessing before they left for their mission and the person with high authority asked if he did not have a father, and the answer was in the positive so the young man didn't think his dad could do it, wouldn't know how but that father's blessing was from the loving heart to his son and the same lesson-the power of the priesthood is there with those who may not hold a title of apostle but had all the power needed and was as powerful or maybe more so than anyone else for the purpose it was given. I also love how someone without hands was called to be patriarch somewhere. God loves each of us and has a work for us. Lovely baptismal picture.

I just recently learned of your class and started watching as part of my Come Follow Me study. I am overwhelmed at how much I have already learned in just two classes. I have come to realize that the more I learn and understand the more I understand the wrong choices I have made, some small and some large. While I have served in many callings and done the best I could with the knowledge I had at the time, I am seeing how I could have done better. At times I have felt like I must not be making much progress since Satan keeps throwing past choices at me, but tonight I came to realize from your class that as you said, "Light and darkness always coincide", that of course he is going to try harder to stop my progress if I am progressing! His constant effort is to push us down, and that effort gets more intense as we grow closer to Heavenly Father. Thank you for that one bit of learning!

Hey Jared, I loved the idea of learning from the scriptures with the intent to live them. To pause my study with the intention to inquire and ask of God. To place at the forefront understanding of God's will and intent for me over checking off the box and getting to the end of the chapter. These thoughts reminded me of President Monson's talk, "To Learn, To Do, To Be." What am I learning as a result of my study? What will I do because of what I've learned and felt? What will I become as a result of what I've learned and done? I've started to ask students with more frequency, "What are you becoming because of what you're learning and doing?" I hope I'm becoming more like my Savior through my time in the scriptures. I felt these thoughts have done that for me today. Thank you!

    Myron R
In October of 2011, Jackie (my wife) and I were on our way home to Oregon from visiting our son, Jared and his new wife, Shannon, who lived near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. As we traveled through Missouri, we planned to stop at some of the Church history sites there.
We had been on the road for two weeks and were tired, and Jackie was trying to fight off a cold she had picked up in Toronto. As I was driving, she started repeatedly doing something that really bothered me. (I totally forget what it was, but it really annoyed me, because she wouldn’t stop.) I knew it was because of the cold, so when I considered asking her to stop, I knew if I did, she would get defensive, and we would have a fight-the bad kind where neither of us win. It would ruin the whole day, which, except for the annoyance of her repeated and incessant behavior, had been a very enjoyable day. I prayed for guidance, and this scripture came into my mind:
(Doctrine and Covenants | Section 105:14)
For behold, I do not require at their hands to fight the battles of Zion; for, as I said in a former commandment, even so will I fulfil-I will fight your battles.
Now that scripture was given to the Saints who had been in Missouri where we were planning on visiting that day. They didn’t obey it. I understand why they didn’t, but they fought the battle of Crooked River and lost; they fought the battle of Hawns Mill and lost; they fought the battle of Far West and lost. It is interesting to think how Church history might have been different if they had obeyed this counsel.
Anyway, in answer to my prayer, as I was driving and this scripture came into my mind, I thought to myself, “Hmm. Let the Lord fight your battles? Interesting idea. Worth a try.” So, I told the Lord in a silent, mental prayer, as I drove, what I thought He should tell Jackie to get her to relent and stop doing that annoying thing she was doing. I told Him He could tell her what I suggested or something else according to His superior judgment, but would He please fight this battle for me.
I don’t know if He told her what I said or not. But I do know that she immediately stopped doing that thing that had been bothering me. And she did not do it again.
The next day as we were heading across Wyoming, she started doing another annoying thing. I thought, “It worked yesterday; maybe it will work again,” and I asked the Lord to fight my battle again. And again, immediately she stopped.
Now that is just twice-not enough to convince me that it will always work. But it is enough to convince me to suggest it to you. When you have a conflict in which both parties are not likely to rejoice at the end, tell the Lord what you think He should do. (You don’t want to just turn it over to Him. As with the brother of Jared and his problem with lighting, I figure you have to put some effort into it.) Then ask Him to fight the battle for you. He just might do it. And you will win.
    And so, will she.
And that, I learned, is how to win a family fight.

In this weeks reading I am stuck by the beauty and order of the gospel. In reading about the 3 key’s of the Aaronic Priesthood I thought “how are those 3 things important as the first 3 things to be restored? As I thought about it and studied other resources (like this video) it came to me that one (for the most part) must be living worthy or cleanly to have the ministering of angels, and that by repentance and baptism and subsequently taking the sacrament to maintain our cleanliness we are then able to have the ministry of angels in our lives. Such a beautiful concept - seeing order in which the Lord’s church works, and now knowing it is prepatory for the further precepts. I’m excited to learn what comes next.
I also was intrigued to hear your commentary on the first verses in this section, it is almost like you were building suspension in me to know more about why they were repeated again and again. What came to my mind was that we are all here on the journey to return home to Him, and although we will take different roads we all have the same destination, so no wonder it first few versus are the same. And if they are the same and the time was taken to record them, what is so valuable about them. Reading them with this mindset, what stood out to me (and this is only for me😉) was keep my commandments. Hmmmm. I though I do keep the commandment, but then I was prompted to live them at a higher level, to look at where I am falling short? how can I live them better? How can I strive to keep His commandments so I am ready when called? Very quickly I was shown a way I could step up, live more fully, a commandment and with it a opportunity for repentance. What a blessing we have in the Word of God.
Thank you for helping me understand, thank you for being a servant in God’s hand in increasing my wonder and gratefulness for the scriptures.
    Thank you!

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! I loved your insights into these sections. There's more in the video for D&C 14-17 about repeated revelations that I think you'll enjoy. Thanks for sharing!
