Nice to see it's not only NSW branch lines that are in disgusting condition, AK Cars battled to get over 30-40KMh is first parts of the video. My we have let our once grand railways deteriorate over the years, shame! I really enjoyed the country scenery, worth the video alone, thanks Pannier.
Progress, it now takes a 5 car consist and who knows how many crew to do what one EM car with a 2 man crew would do. Beautifully filmed video, with no annoying added music, just the tick over of the engines.
The slow speed reminds me of riding the Thai railways in the 70s. Slow and easy and you stop at every little station. We always rode 3rd class with the chickens, but what an experience.
Nicely done video! A slow ride, I preferred to watch it at 2x speed. Please consider adding a map, and a mention of brief history and future expectations for this line?
It was converted on the cheap (ie. No improvements/fixes to the underlying roadbed, just new sleepers and repositioned existing track afaik) because there was going to be no way to use the line after the NE got gauge converted and has usually only seen emergency maintenance ever since. It's not surprising it's deteriorated so badly.
@@davidjohnson2441 that happens every time the AK cars run over this line. "emergency repairs" every single time. Its a miracle that its only had one minor derailment in the last few years
At Oaklands there were two boxlike lanterns which had holes punched in them to denote the gauge yard limit, one says VIC the other NSW. These lanterns are in a little museum at Oaklands. I dimly recall seeing a photo of a CPH and DERM at the platform, not sure when this happened. There were complex rules about what happened if two trains from opposite directions arrived, Junee and Benalla had to talk on the phone.
This is much better than when thebusofdoomFSX chased a train on this line a couple years ago, clearly they’ve done some work on it. That Tungamah spot hasn’t changed though!
I did a journey from Southern Cross to Albury a few years ago, it was Christmas Eve hot 38 degrees too hot the train was overloaded, passengers were in seats, in aisles, on floor, in door ways it was jam packed in every carriage as we got up towards the the Border the train was speeding so fast it tilted and you could feel it lift off the rails...people were screaming, kids were crying, it was mass hysteria ...it got so bad the Guards were locking themselves in as people demanded it stop...it didn't till it got to Albury...there were people injured and physically sick with anxiety...no one came to help, no help arrived luckily it didn't end in total disaster...
Hasn't improved since the last time l went that way and Im retired now lol...I wonder what the cost of running those AK cars was...that money surely could have been spent on the track...however l think it needs lots of work and l bet the local track patrol could tell them whats wrong. reminds me of the track to North Star..and that's another story lol. I used to enjoy running a Wheatie up there spend the night at Club Malwala while a crew from Cootermundra or further out would load it for us.....We would pull the train up behind the Club then change crews do the reverse on the return...always arrived at a reasonable time into Yarrawonga. Again thank-you for the wonderful journey and insight...regards Doc from Maryborough

They have lasers that measure the deviation from the theoretical ideal. The data is then handed to the maintenance department and they can decide how much to fix it.
I travelled to Oaklands in the late ‘70s, the dual gauge yard was a sight to behold. In 1984 I rode a wheaty in the van from Junee to Urana the terminus at the time.
Maybe the people who use the train should complain about the poor quality of the track to the state government member whose electorate the train passes through to hopefully get it fixed
If it were the safety nazis at V/Line managing this track instead of the present ARTC, the line would've been shut years ago and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of grain would've gone by truck to port.
All I can say is that it is a disgrace that our rail lines are in such poor condition. Privatization has not improved any service that the government in any state has sold off. Profits over the communities needs.
anyone, (with lots of money) can restore trains, trolleys ,, but what about the tracks? a fine example is, the sea shore trolley museum. They, have a great crew of workers, restoring them, it's a wonderful place,, been going there since i was 7, i'm 59 now. The line that goes out, is terrible. after spending millions on the place,,, the tracks suck. Just watching them fall apart after restoring them, isn't a fun thing to see, as the tweek, with all the woodwork,, it's a shame. The line should be longer, and double. the collection there is amazing, and should be looked after with more funds. I know it's not easy, but i'd love to tell someone, to,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, JUST DO IT.

The entire line has a 30 km/h speed restriction on it.
SA & NSW are the world rail networks. Victoria is actually no 1 with WA behind at No 2 so where you're getting your opinions from is wrong.
Love watching SSR's locomotives, No matter what they're pulling.

1:57 can't believe how orange the land and sky is in that sunrise!
Again you show your mastery in composition. This enhances the subject matter. Great to watch
Third world track is the story of Victorian railways even in Melbourne, it's going to take a disaster like Granville in NSW to get them to act.
Rubbish. Victoria is still No with railways in Australia, has been since 1854.
SA is shit, so is NSW, so is QLD.
A delightful scenic journey!! Wonderful photography and editing!
It's so strange to watch the locos sway like that. Thanks for the video!
Beautifully shot and produced, what a gem👍
Again another work of art you could fill an art gallery with these living moving landscapes with audio
Great video as always Adam, certainly needs alot of work to bring it up to scratch the Oaklands line.
02:04 perfect shoot

Thanks for sharing, your composition and videography is amazing.
@ 3:22 , i love the art. better than the grafiti usually seen .
For a line that was converted from broad to standard gauge not all that long ago, it's certainly a goat track.
It was converted on the cheap (ie. @@TheDemocrab I was surprised to see the AK cars on the line, I'm assuming it's Victorian not ARTC.
That was a good day out. Well shot.
No doubt the AK Cars will give the Oaklands branch a bad report card!
Oh yeah
They closed the line for 2 weeks after this run.
@@davidjohnson2441 that happens every time the AK cars run over this line. "emergency repairs" every single time. Its a miracle that its only had one minor derailment in the last few years
They talk of high speed rail and cannot do low speed. Great video. Drivers need a medal. So what was the diagnosis?
Thanks.
G´day Mate!! Kind regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina, amazing footage... All the best, Rodolfo

There was a special CPH, I think, run to Oakland’s a couple of years ago. You should be able to find it here. Good luck.
The video is there, just checked. Not CPH though.
@@jimcrawford5039 I think it was in the ‘70s or ‘60s when both lines were open. It might have been in Divisional Diary or Bulletin.
brilliant filming as always

The ARHS asked VR if they can have the Sloan nameboard, VR said you can have the whole lot, so the mallee shed is in the museum.
Great video…track needs more than just a bit of TLC.
if there were any seasickness pills in the first aid kit when the train left benalla there wont be any when they got back there.
Very well done video, you Brits have a nice collection of vintage locomotives.
They are in Australia mate

Hmm, looks more like the main south in between Moss Vale and Goulburn.
World class track maintenance lmfao 😂😂
I'd like to see the printout from the track recording car at the end of that
Nice Video Pannier!

If it doesn’t derail the track is OK.

@@FloydBromley Thanks for the information mate 👍
And how strange that NSW allowed Victorian Railways to invade their territory !
VR was involved in NSW prior to the takeover/sale of the State Railway systems ............
An interesting point. Invasions to Albury, Oaklands, Deniliquin, Balranald. All broad gauge.

@@brucewilliams8714 not anymore for Albury it's all Standard now V/line still goes to Albury but its a Velocity train now
This tilt is dangerous...
Is that now standard gauge track ?
yes, done when the bg track to albury was converted.
I've never seen such a slow train.
Out of genuine curiosity, why the two engines?
If one failed they have a backup
Plus GM10, she's 70 years old.
3rd world railways. That's really embarrassing! We are so behind the rest of the world!
The condition of that line is an indictment on our Govts. Disgraceful.
Very important to have Oaklands grain!!!!!
It is sad the way we have let the rails deteriorate 😢
Maybe the people who use the train should complain about the poor quality of the track to the state government member whose electorate the train passes through to hopefully get it fixed
So this is a broad gauge line?
No
Wouldn’t take much of an investment to make every driving car to actively monitor and report track condition.
Wow ! you call that bad track 🤣 go check out some of the American railroad tracks
