I live in a town where a Carhartt manufacturing plant is located. It provides good jobs with good wages for our community. It is one of the few manufacturers in our community. My dad worked there for awhile and my mother did as well. I know several of the people in this video and they are all good citizens of the community.

Hi folks. Lately we’ve noticed a lot more interest in where our 127-year old family-owned business is based and where we make our products. We think that’s a good thing, because it’s an important discussion. We take great pride in what we do, so it’s also important to us that our customers have the right information about us. We’re not going to go on and on about decades of policy decisions, business challenges, competition, etc. So, if you’re so inclined to read on, the following are details on how, in spite of decades of hurdles put in front of us, we remain as committed to the American worker as our Founder, Hamilton Carhartt was.
For starters, while we have sewing facilities around the globe, we're proud that we have and always will make products here in the U.S.A. As a matter of fact, over the past 15 years our facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee have made more than 80 million garments and accessories in the U.S. Which is why we continue to make more rugged workwear here than anyone else. Many of these items are our core, tried and true Carhartts that millions of hard working Americans depend on - from the Lineman who keep the lights on, to the Farmer who grows our food. Our 1000 proudly unionized workers take pride in this work and stand behind every stitch. Would we like to surpass our own U.S. production benchmarks? You bet. But even when we have an opportunity to increase our U.S. production, sometimes open sewing operator positions go unfilled. And yet we forge ahead, every day. It’s what we do.
But what about those tags you see with names of other Countries on them? The best example we can offer is the popularity of “sweat wicking” performance apparel made by sporting goods brands that many American workers already wear as a base layer. You might even be wearing one right now. Carhartt partnered with an American company called Cocona (Colorado) who have developed a superior body-temp regulating, quick-dry, odor-fighting garment technology. Over the past few years we’ve integrated their 37.5® Technology into select base layers and t-shirts - we call it Force Extremes. To compete with the big sporting goods apparel makers who manufacture these types of garments primarily oversees, we also assemble these garments in certified offshore sewing facilities. For these types of garments, we offer a choice to you as a consumer - buy a performance base layer from a company that doesn’t make anything here, or from us, a company that still makes many of its core items in the U.S.
We were founded in Detroit in 1889. Since then, our headquarters has moved just 10 miles. For 127 years, the family business has been run here, the apparel has been designed here, and members of the Carhartt family continue to work here. But where we’re based and where we manufacture our garments is just one part of the equation. Who we source from is also important. For example, in 2015 alone we purchased the following from our U.S. suppliers: enough fabric from Mt. Vernon Mills (Georgia) equating to 19.5 million pounds of cotton; 32 million buttons, 2 million rivets, and 43.3 million snaps from YKK Snap USA (Kentucky); 14 million sliders and 6.2 million yards of zipper chain from YKK Snap USA (Georgia); 5 million knit cuffs, 1 million+ knit bands, and 130,000 knit collars from Straus Knitting Mills (Minnesota); 990,000 drawcords from Franklin Braid Manufacturing (Virginia); 320,000 drawcords from Green Mountain Knitting (Vermont); 1.1 million+ drawcords from Hope Global (Rhode Island). We don’t have a reportable figure on the number of U.S. jobs we indirectly support, but we know that these great partners work as hard as we do to help Americans make a life here.
You have many choices as a consumer - and we wouldn’t have it any other way. You can purchase from the companies who copy our styles, yet offshore 100% of their goods. You can purchase from smaller companies who make 100% of their goods here, but may not have the assortment you need. Either way, on behalf of our more than 2000 U.S.-based employees, we hope you consider Carhartt. And if you don’t, we thank you for your interest in our ability to remain competitive and contribute to our Nation's economy.
    United, we outwork them all.

I bought my Carhartt jacket after viewing this video. I was so proud of an American company producing such a great American product. When I received my jacket in the mail and opened it the first thing I noticed was the good quality of the jacket. The second thing I noticed was the tag that said made in Mexico with American fabric, well then I am only 50% percent disappointed. I was really excited about Carhartt being 100% American made and yet I am disappointed that a big business went for the cheaper labor option. Americans will pay more for American products Carhartt, just so you know.

It is awesome that Carhartt still makes many of their products in the US and they are the best work clothes I have ever owned. I would say that if Carhartt made a wider range of their products in the US I would definitely spend more at their store and less at competitors. When it comes down to it I am willing to spend more for a pair of Carhartt's made in the US but when I am left to choose between two foreign made garments the money typically goes to the cheaper of the two. If more of their things were made here, my whole wardrobe would be Carhartt. But again I recognize the challenges of the international marketplace and commend Carhartt for at least trying to protect well paid American workers.

Many large companies distribute their manufacturing across multiple regions. It's how you make things at scale, based on supply chain & logistics. Not all your suppliers, or buyers, can be in one place. Carhartt clearly states that they make products here in the USA, as well as elsewhere. I don't see anything misleading about what they say or do. Outstanding company & I would challenge anyone to find a better clothing company in the USA.

American made=supporting an American company, keeping AMERICANS (not the Chinese) in jobs, supporting what American stands for.

We hear you on this. Our Made in the USA Line was created because our fans told us they wanted products that are made and sourced here in the U.S. We then shifted some product to other manufacturing facilities to accommodate production.
We stand behind our Made in the USA Line, which is made entirely here in America by our hardworking men and women in Kentucky and Tennessee. Our seven core styles are made of all USA sourced fabrics. Check out the link in our video description for more.

I love Carhartt - one of the greatest brands I carry in my closet. I'm glad that you guys actually took in to account and listen to your fans and customers to make this particular line of clothing (wish all your clothing was Made in USA though).

Hi, he writes from Poland, it is such a country of 38 million people in Europe 1000 years of history. Poland was almost 50 years under Soviet occupation (sad, England and the US sold us to Stalin after the Second World War), although we were faithful allies, it is by the way for those who are not interested in history). But do not worry, Poles have always loved the US, starting with Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Kazimierz Pułaski.
Today I ordered my first Carhartt jacket. I am reading these entries and I am wondering if there will be a difference in terms of quality, where they were produced?
Of course, I would like that my jacket was made in the USA, it's such a cult thing, because there are too many goods from around China, and I'm also a US ally :). In Poland, too, the textile industry fell through a flood of Chinese cheaper products. I did not know the Carhartt brand before, but if I wanted to buy a jacket I was looking for the Polish equivalent of Ebay (Allegro) and found Carhartt's jackets as I wrote earlier, they are not cheap. The average earnings from us in the country is $ 700, the jacket can cost 1/3 of earnings. But what about how I liked the style and material, that I decided to buy one in the spring and maybe later I will buy the winter-lined hedge. The pants are also cool and I'll do it. However, it seems to me that it will be increasingly difficult to maintain production in the US, take into account how the Asian countries are developing.
    I greet everyone
    I greet Carhartt

Many American companies like LL Bean and Filson do the same thing; they have a "made in the USA" line (usually more expensive) and a Made in China, Mexico, etc., line. Levis also has a made in the USA line, but you're usually paying about at least double the price...

You might have to drive to Tennessee or Kentucky to find the U.S. made versions. No way to find them on their site because even what is made in the U.S. is also made outside. So when you order you don't know what you'll get (and probably imported).

I appreciate 'CarharttSince1889' taking the time to respond to the comments. If Carhartt is offering USA merchandise, it is up to us to buy it and ask our retailers to stock it. It is our responsibility to spend a few extra minutes to find the 'Made in the USA' and not buy Viet to save a few bucks. Support companies that are bringing jobs back and buy only the 'Made in the USA' lines.

I've had my Carhartt Jacket for ten years now. I work outside year round, that's 10 long winters it's kept me warm and dry. The collar is fraying, and so are the cuffs on the sleeves. It's a great jacket, and I'd hate to get rid of it and just get a new one. Any chance of getting it refurbished? Figured I'd ask cause I don't know how to sew.

I admit I STOPPED buying Carhartt stuff a few years ago because it didnt feel the same as some of the older stuff, like the older long sleeve button collar shirts with a pocket, those were tough and I still have a few of them bought around 10 years ago. The older ones were heavier and the newer ones seemed more like just heavy T-shirts. But Im looking for a ranch coat now with the detachable hood so I'll give it a try.

Yes, it’s true we do make many of our products abroad. But at the same time we made over a million items in the USA last year. To put that into perspective, no brand made more work wear in the USA than Carhartt. Support our Made in USA line and we’ll keep growing it.
